Sports journalism only in the sense that it’s in defector, but I read this piece on the comedy of Tim Robinson this morning and found it to be structurally very similar, like a little too similar, to this YouTube essay I happened to see yesterday on the same topic. Could just be parallel thinking though, I really don’t know. https://defector.com/tim-robinson-understands-what-the-boys-are-going-through https://youtu.be/loDrPtFKduA?si=21d3eGcA8GHYRpIG

It’s a pretty standard take on Robinson’s comedy since ITYSL.

Yeah, genuinely maybe every Tim Robinson commentary starts with comparisons to Nathan Fielder, John Mulaney, and Bo Burnham and ends with the Doggy Door sketch; there are only so many things to say about him and analogs to compare him to.

I wish Defector would add an extra subscription tier that hides comments; I’d gladly pay an extra $30 a year for it.

Holding a 20 dollar bill over that part of the screen would save significant cash.

Ahead of the Men’s World Cup, Opta has pulled their advanced soccer data from Sports Reference, one of the best stats sites used by lots of journalists and analysts. quote:The data provider has asserted that our use of the data violated our agreement. Their demand came unexpectedly despite our long-standing and good-faith operation of FBref and Stathead. We have operated the sites in a consistent manner from their creation (well before the signing of this agreement) through today, and we have always welcomed open and frank discussions about how the sites operate. https://www.sports-reference.com/blog/2026/01/fbref-stathead-data-update/ In interesting timing news… “FIFA select Stats Perform as first official worldwide betting data and betting streaming rights distributor, including exclusive World Cup 2026™ rights” https://inside.fifa.com/tournament-...butor-world-cup

Also the comments are generally fine? Mostly baseline lib stuff except for the handful of weirdo zionists that chime in to poo poo on Samer when he writes about Palestine.

This is a weird thing to me because like they can't stop someone from posting stats, they'll probably just find another source since there are several independent stat services. These independents can't be as real time accurate as the official but they always catch up in the end and often have interesting unique metrics.
