I don't subscribe to The Athletic, but after seeing the preview paragraph and a reference to "bad gut," how many stories are out of Steve Howe's book? Steve Howe was a colossal screw-up, but a chapter in his autobiography about the pranks they pulled on each other is one of the best I've read.

I'm not sure early Deadspin holds up for the same reasons; Daulerio Deadspin definitely doesn't, and from his own columns, Drew Magary has admitted that he's changed a lot. Or even some place like EDSBS, I'm probably not the only one who remembers when General Dog posted:I think we've all learned a lot about what we can get away with writing over the past 15 years. even more stunning are some of the real American sportswriting classics out there. Breaks of the Game has some moments that wouldn't be thought of or published in 2020.

It's sad but not shocking. Photographers in both general and sports journalism have been getting poo poo on for decades and its only gotten worse now that literally everyone's got a camera in their pocket and publishers/editors will just consider a blurry HDR mess pulled from some rando's twitter feed as good enough.

Where he once said this is nothing to worry about and no one will die to transitioning to weird poo poo about how after 70k died that it’s now okay and cool. Also he just constantly race Baits.
