I think we might now have a reason for Haden Blackman's sudden departure from Lucasarts...

Kotaku posted:

New Lucasarts president Paul Meegan certainly isn't wasting any time. Barely two months into the job and we hear he's already swinging the axe and cancelling high profile sequels.

If you were wondering why it was strange that Force Unleashed II creative director Haden Blackman would leave mid-project, this may explain things: according to sources at Lucasarts, Meegan has cancelled a third Force Unleashed game that was already in development, and members of Force Unleashed II's team (though we're not sure exactly how many) will be shown the door once that game ships.

I'm sure some people in this thread will be overjoyed by this, but think about it; TFU II has been proclaimed to be a "Empire Strikes Back" of sorts plot-wise, and since the third sequel's cancellation is taking place so late in TFUII's dev cycle, it's likely we're getting a cliffhanger ending with no foreseeable resolution in the future. Ouch, my canon.

Kotaku posted:

These sources say "morale and productivity are at all-time lows" since Meegan took over, with most Lucasarts developers only finding out about Force Unleashed II's cancellation on the PSP by reading it on gaming news sites.

Welp, looks like internal development at Lucasarts has gone to poo poo, thankfully we have competent developers like Bioware and Traveller's Tales to handle thi

Kotaku posted:

We've also been told that another sweeping change made by Meegan is that the majority of "external" development of Lucasarts properties is coming to an end, with BioWare's Old Republic MMO to be the last game not developed internally at Lucasarts. That would presumably mean, for example, no more LEGO Star Wars or LEGO Indiana Jones titles after the upcoming LEGO: Clone Wars, as those have all been handled by Traveller's Tales.

:wtc:

It won't happen, sadly. The X-Wing/TIE Fighter series was developed by Totally Games; it wasn't a in-house project at Lucasarts, they only published. With this new "no external developers" policy that's being instituted, what small chance there was of a good sequel has gone up in smoke. :smith:

Lucasarts might be facing that same situation again, though:

Kotaku posted:

Another unnamed project, due to ship next year, has avoided the axe, but has been "put on hold" while developers have been told to "expect management and reporting changes". Those changes are down to the departure of Blackman, who as work was winding down on Force Unleashed II had been leading development on this secret project.

Add that to the "low productivity and morale" bit from earlier, plus the fact that it's stated that most of TFUII's dev team is being shown the door when the game releases, and you start to see a lot of parallels between "two years ago" and now.

But I swear, if that "unnamed project" was Republic Commando II... :argh:

So, uh, this just happened:

StreetInsider posted:

Global leader in high-quality family entertainment agrees to acquire world-renowned Lucasfilm Ltd, including legendary STAR WARS franchise.

Acquisition continues Disney’s strategic focus on creating and monetizing the world’s best branded content, innovative technology and global growth to drive long-term shareholder value.

Lucasfilm to join company’s global portfolio of world class brands including Disney, ESPN, Pixar, Marvel and ABC.

STAR WARS: EPISODE 7 feature film targeted for release in 2015.

An investor conference call will take place at approximately 4:30 p.m. EDT / 1:30 p.m. PDT today, October 30, 2012. Details for the call are listed in the release.

BURBANK, Calif. & SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock on October 26, 2012, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing. The final consideration will be subject to customary post-closing balance sheet adjustments.

“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that already includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.

Funny you mention that:

We got home from Tampa and Necronomicon late last night (after a full day of flying) to the stunning news of the Disney/Lucasfilm deal. It's going to take a little time to process my thoughts, but I'll try to post some comments here later today.

But to answer a few of the most immediate questions:

1. No, I haven't been contacted by either Disney or LFL.
2. There's no indication that anything from the Thrawn Trilogy (or any other EU book/comic will be part of the new movies.
3. There's also no indication that they *won't* make an appearance. Right now, we really have nothing on any of those details.
4. If Disney *did* want to use anything from the EU, they wouldn't need the author's approval or permission to do so. Everything that's been written under the Star Wars logo is LFL properly (as is only right and proper), and they can do with it as they please.
5. If by some miracle Disney *does* want my input on the project, I *will* be on the next flight to California. Heck, I'll charter a plane if I have to.

That's all for now. More thoughts when my brain wakes up a bit.

It's getting straight 10s from the TFN folks, so... maybe?

I'm not surprised at the Firefly comparisons; most reviews mention that this book is very much a "western" (think The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly to Shatterpoint's Apocalypse Now), and when you combine westerns and sci-fi, well, people can't help but mention that show. :clint:

Well, I went and tracked down the review threads for the Dark Nest novels.

No crazy 11s but overall, each novel still averaged about a 7 out of 10 (except for Swarm War which came out as an 8 :stare:). Still quite fanboy-ish, but sadly, not as much as we thought. Well, unless you're looking for individual reviews but I'm not reading through 11 pages of "the Killiks actually, like, symbolize the human soul, man :catdrugs:"

Those games were hard though; barring a few missions (like Kile II) it seemed like everything in RS was focused around the central objective of "protect [blank] from TIE Bombers!". X-Wing had better mission variety, though some (like the nonsensical Redemption escort) were likewise a pain in the rear end.

Hope you don't have an AMD card, because in-flight graphics in XWA (and pretty much all the other X-Wing series games) have been broken for a few Catalyst versions. Had to play it through my CPU's integrated chipset; works fine but no anti-aliasing is a bit of a bummer.

I've been having a fine time using the 360 controller though, controls map pretty well to the existing buttons. And this is coming from someone with an actual joystick, a Sidewinder. Loved using it as a kid, but nowadays it's kind of obtuse in comparison, really.

If I remember correctly, this particular subplot was adapted by Dark Horse for one of the Empire comics; was pleasantly surprised to see that stuff in a visual form.

Looking back, there was a lot of material from the dramas that were retroactively incorporated into the EU, like the after mentioned bit of Tarkin possibly betraying the Emperor, but also scenes like the very first one in the ESB audio where Renegade Flight gets blown the hell up (by Fel's 181st, as we later find out in the RS comics). It's also quite possibly my favorite scene in the radio dramas. :allears:
