Something's been bugging me lately. I remember as a kid thinking that the Jedi were these Knight-Errant sorts that wander about doing good with a loose organization, but what I can't remember was when I first heard about the Jedi Council and how they were organized.

Anybody know when that all first came up in Star Wars?
