The first time I heard a kid with an American accent in real life, he was whining that it was his turrrn on the playground equipment. It took me a good few minutes before I realised he wasn't putting it on, and he really did speak like that.

Is there a free and relatively simple website service that can show videos on the page? It’s fine if it’s just a youtube or Vimeo box.

I tried using Wordpress but it requires a 12 month subscription for showing video or getting an extension that will do the same.

If you've got access to the HTML, you can just copy&paste it in there through an iframe. Youtube has a feature where if you click on "share" and them "embed", it will generate a code snippet that you can just plop into your site.

No it doesn't, I'm 100% sure you can just embed media using the regular boxes. I do it on my wordpress site all the time.

Yes, you can embed youtube videos in your own website.

Also, be careful you don't end up with a vid.me situation.

Thanks folks! It was pretty easy once I figured out how to just write an iframe embed in html instead of using the built-in Wordpress functions. It was a little obfuscated by the menu, I guess they want to sell subscriptions to newbies like me.

Re. vid.me: video is from a private YouTube account and the website is only gonna be up for a month so chances of surprise porn are low :v:

A bunch of racists were talking about how all catholics are evil and all white people in north america are complicit in the genocide of native americans and living on stolen land. All in response to like 7 churches, including one african and one eastern orthodox, had been burned down, plus plenty more non-arson vandalism, in the span of 5 days in canada after unmarked graves were found at old residential schools.

I asked if Ukrainian and Polish immigrants and their descendents fleeing persecution in eastern europe in the lead up to WW1 also have white guilt in what happened to the native americans and deserve to have their churches burned down and vandalized. They mostly said yes, so I asked if the ottoman empire killing christians was good or bad.

For anyone reading that post and thinking to themselves "wait aren't the people complaining about anti-white racism usually white supremacists?", the answer is yes lol

The dude is real mad that nobody likes the group that perpetrated a genocide in Canada within living memory and don't want to sweep it under the rug.

With a phone using Qi wireless charging, is there any harm just leaving it sat on a charger when I'm at my desk? Or does it need discharging sometimes for battery health?

I ask because my Macbook, which stays plugged in, seems to consciously let itself discharge rather than stay at 100% 24/7.

Sitting at 0 or 100% charge all day isn't great for the batteries, which is why the MacBook and electric cars do this. If you're only planning on keeping the phone a few years it probably doesn't matter though.

X-posting this and maybe there is a physics for dumb people thread somewhere it would be better in?

Basically, I'm trying to design a table and need to know how much downward force at one edge will make the table move noticeably.

Kaiser Schnitzel posted:

I haven't done any physics since high school AP physics uh....15 years ago?

Here's an end-on drawing of the table and base:

The table will weigh like 250lb all told, the center of mass is 18.75" up from the bottom along the centerline. How much downward force at one edge would it take to lift the opposite edge of the base? Basically, how many pounds of someone using the edge of the table to stand up/lean on is going to make it move and feel unsteady? Is there a generic formula/equation for this, or some way to run it in a simulation?

By the calculation someone mentions here: https://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=154454 I get a horizontal force of ~90lb tipping the table over, which is useful, but doesn't give a great picture of what force it will take to knock all the glasses on the table over.

Two hundred and twenty pounds on the tabletop edge will pivot the thing on one edge of the base and lift the other.

I was having lunch with my mom, and she mentioned that she talked to someone from the power company, and he said constantly adjusting your AC leads to higher bills than just setting it and leaving it. So now she just leaves it on a constant temp (let's say 74) and leaves it there. I have had a smart thermostat for a few years now, and have it set to 72 starting at 1am, up to 74 at 9am, and 77 when I'm away at work.

Which one of us is actually saving money?

Only argument I could see in favor of a constant 74 is that the greater difference between two temperature differentials, the faster heat will leak from hot to cold.

It would be extreme, but maybe the burden of maintaining 72 part time outweights any benefit of being at 77?

Well it’s complicated.

First, I’ll say that you’re definitely saving energy. The rate of heat* transfer is proportional to the square of the difference between interior and exterior temperatures. If you raise the interior temperature, the difference is lower, and heat transfer slows. Your air conditioner uses more or less the same amount of energy to move a certain amount of heat, so the less heat* that transfers into your house, the better. Your air conditioner doesn’t have to run as long or as frequently for as long as the thermostat setting remains high, and you save money throughout those hours.

The caveat, and the power person’s point, is if you pay different electricity rates at different times of the day. If your home is decently insulated, you may be better off having it chilled in the afternoon versus having the air conditioner do an inordinate amount of cooling in the evening when you arrive home and rates are highest.

The programmable thermostat is still an advantage in saving money, but you may want to do something counterintuitive like chill the house down to sixty‐nine starting at three P.M., raising the set point to seventy‐four at five o’clock (or whenever rates go up), and then bring it back down to what you prefer sleeping at once peak rates have passed.

*Some physicists will object to the way I used “heat”, but come on, no one uses “heat” the way the textbooks say it’s supposed to be used.

This nerd talks for way too long about how he cools his Texas home.

I’ve had an AC guy say the same thing. His reasoning being that once you cool back down to your living temperature you’ve lost the savings. But I imagine it has a whole lot to do with how well insulated your house is.

But yeah where I live we have constant electricity rates. I'd often wondered about the whole "well isn't it defeating the purpose cooling back down to a certain temp kinda thing. But my house is pretty well insulated. So I don't know.

You don’t get depth perception, but you can get more detail and more apparent brightness with two eyes than with one.

With telescopes, there are two ways to get an image to two eyes. You can split the image from one telescope with mirrors in a “binoviewer”, or you can have two identical telescopes rigidly connected and perfectly aligned.

They both work. Binoviewers are generally the way to go with small objects viewed at high magnification (like the planets). Twin telescopes can give superior low-magnification views of things like star fields and some galaxies and nebulæ.

So there's a lot I'm sure I'm missing context wise, but why is the Darién gap hard to bridge? I can only seem to find concerns stated as 'environmental', which I can believe, but doesn't exactly go indepth. As well, why did that stop builders? I'm sure other parts of the Pan-American highway bridge environmentally sensitive areas, was it just that the gap is hard enough that by the time technology came around people actually cared about destroying habitats?

The wiki's summary seems reasonable?

quote:

Because of swamps, marshes, and rivers, construction would be very expensive.

Efforts have been made for decades to eliminate the gap in the Pan-American highway, but have been controversial. Planning began in 1971 with the help of United States funding, but this was halted in 1974 after concerns raised by environmentalists. Another effort to build the road began in 1992, but by 1994 a United Nations agency reported that the road, and the subsequent development, would cause extensive environmental damage. The Embera-Wounaan and Kuna have also expressed concern that the road could bring about the potential erosion of their cultures.

It was at the end of the line for both Panama and Colombia so each was only so interested in bridging the gap...
