Have a question regarding French grammar. I'm painting a crustacean themed circus poster. I want it to include the line "Death Defying Decapods", but in French. According to Google translate it's "Décapodes Défiant la Mort" would that be too proper or would it be more normal or at least acceptable drop the "la" from the phrase?

It technically should be done. Anytime you remove a wheel and (theoretically) retorque the lug nuts you should check again after a day or so due to rotational forces potentially loosening the lug nuts slightly. The left-hand side of the vehicle is more likely to have the nuts loosen because of right hand threads and the rotation of the wheels (unless you have some weird older vehicle where the left side has left handed threads).

Have a question involving nursing homes/elderly care in countries with single payer health care. So, my gf's mom has pretty severe dementia and she and her sister are paying a small fortune every month to keep her in an assisted living situation. I was wondering what the situation looks like in non-shithole developed countries. Are there state run assisted living institutions, or is it similar to the US where you're basically paying exorbitant sums out of pocket for the care of the old people. Medically Assisted Suicide is a whole other thing that should exist with the US, but from what I understand dementia patients are oftentimes not eligible on account of them not being able to act "in sound mind". Sadly, while her mom was still verbal she wished for death and could've possibly been eligible if the US wasn't so awful in basically every regard.

Fruits of the sea posted:Denmark has private care facilities as well as state-run care "homes". This distinction makes more sense in Danish, because in a care home one is renting an apartment in a way that almost identical to a normal rental agreement, with all the rights that follow. You still have to pay, but everybody gets a basic pension from the government. Frankly the basic pension isn't great, but it does mean seniors don't normally wind up on the streets unless there's some other circumstances interfering. Prices for care homes can vary quite a bit depending on size and services. Ah ok. A cursory Google search seems to indicate that elder care is something of an afterthought even within developed countries. I mean the Danish system doesn't sound amazing, but it's markedly better than the unfettered capitalism of the US where if you aren't actively making someone else money you're basically hosed.

Generally yes. You'll want to scan at 300 dpi minimum to get good detail in the scan. A higher scan resolution and larger output image will give you more freedom to scale the image as needed

I'm researching 18th century naval uniforms/sailor garb, and also feel like watching a movie of the same vein. What's out there that's free for me to watch? It's been a long time, but yeah. It is apparently on US hulu. Technically it's 19th century, but I cant imagine there's a colossal difference in naval uniforms in that time period. I'm basically researching for a planned drawing/painting involving pirate hotdogs vs naval rats and want to get a clearer image of what that golden age pirate and naval garb looks like. The pirates of the Caribbean movies fill that niche well, but they're kinda insufferable to watch. Edit: it's 1805, so definitely close enough. dog nougat fucked around with this message at 01:05 on Oct 9, 2020 |

You might need to find a local place to tune it up, but in the end it's probably all less than $200. Basically this reply here. Just look in thrift stores. I find it difficult to believe that you could break the machine by not lowering the presser foot. It's basically is held on to the end of a short rod raised and lowered by a lever. I guess it's possible to bend the reciprocating needle portion if the presser foot didn't pop off when it somehow hit it, which I'm not entirely sure is possible. I don't think there are any machines that have a presser foot down interlock of any sort though. For general sewing, the fanciest stitches you'll need are a zigzag and an overlock stitch which any machine basically made after the mid 1940s should have. Edit: I guess you could gently caress something up in the bobbin case when the thread gets all tangled up in there and potentially bend a small part. dog nougat fucked around with this message at 02:09 on Nov 3, 2020 |

Cross posting from the CC questions thread:dog nougat posted:I've had an idea/sort of obsession with altarpieces for a while, and want to make one. Ideally I'd make it out of wood or vacuum formed plastic, but I don't have access to a wood shop or the money to make that happen. Paper mache is basically my best option. I'd like to make it archival if at all possible, but that seems difficult without using acid-free fibers to make the whole thing ($$$). I have a stack of old newspapers, which I'm sure are not acid/lignin free. I'm curious about the longevity of using those fibers, but encasing them an acrylic medium or PVA. I suspect the acids would still eventually eat through fibers and possibly react with the encasement material and the whole thing would eventually collapse or lose it's structure.

AlbieQuirky posted:I would think you could buffer the paper slurry to neutral with calcium carbonate fairly easily, but that wouldn’t address the lignin question. Yeah, looking into removing lignins from pulp is a bit on the complicated side for me, involving making it water soluble with acids and cooking it down essentially. Calcium Carbonate is cheap as hell and worth looking into at least and would probably at least make the paper mache last a bit longer. This article gives some interesting insight into calcium carbonate as a buffer for lignins in paper. I doubt I'd have any way to determine the lignin content of the newsprint though. I'm not super worried about the inks in the paper unless they'd be reactive with the paper pulp. I plan on sealing the whole thing in a medium of some sort (likely acrylic), gessoing, and painting it anyway. I have some amount of old clothing to make a rag from as well. I have a rough concept in my head about how large I'd like to make this thing. I should probably do some rough sketches and layouts to figure this whole thing out and determine if it's actually feasible for me to even make.

You might be able to find a lid that fits your can, but as far as I'm aware there's not really standardized sizes for trashcans as far as openings go. I assume there are probably patents/copyrights or something along those lines that prevents interchangeable trashcan parts. The easiest and cheapest solution here is to just take the lid off the trashcan when you're preparing food.

I wasn't sure if small sticks like that are supposed to be "seasoned" as well, or if I could just collect some branches around the yard and use them instead. If they burn it shouldn't be an issue. Your kindling is such a small amount of fuel compared to full-on logs/split firewood it doesn't really matter. Fireplaces aren't terribly efficient anyway, so you may not get complete combustion of your logs compared to an actual wood burning stove. These are oatmeal cookies, but I don't want to make a second set of dough with more butter (and I feel like more fat is the general method for making things flatter/crisper). I feel like the "easiest" method is to just add more fat/baking spray to the pan, but I'm going to use a silicon mat and that's just even more clean up if I do things that way. As you said, the solution is to add more butter to the dough mixture. Trying to flatten them might work. In my experience oatmeal cookie (and other varieties of drop cookie) dough is kinda sticky so may not flatten too well or easily. There's a cookie thread you could also ask in. If you have the time I'd recommend trying the different techniques on individual cookies and seeing what happens.

Why doesn't milk generally come in cartons outside of the uht pasteurized/lactose free varieties anymore? Is it just that plastic jugs are cheaper, or is there some other reason? I know that there's some amount of vitamin A loss due to something happening with exposure to light with transparent plastic jugs vs an opaque container, it seems to me that a carton is generally a better solution than plastic outside of the difficulty recycling them vs plastic jugs.

hooah posted:Not really an answer to your question, but I've been living with my in-laws for about six weeks now. They get half-gallon cartons that have the pull-ring to open them, and that kind of sucks compared to plastic jugs. Not sure what benefits you see in a carton, honestly. I'll grant you that it's slightly inconvenient compared to opening a bottle, but ime cartons with the cap don't get those weird-rear end milk flakes around the threads like a plastic jug does. For me personally a carton is easier and safer to transport from the store to my house as a bicycle is my sole mode of transportation there. A laminated paperboard carton is a lot less likely to explode if accidentally dropped compared to a plastic jug. The aforementioned loss of vitamin A is something I'm aware of, so it has some marginal concern. I feel like a carton is potentially more space efficient for transport over a plastic jugs due to less wasted space. I'm not a material scientist or engineer, so I'm not sure about how much volume a carton occupies compared to a milk jug, or what the weight issues are between the two. Mostly I'm just curious why there seems to be some sort of shift from cartons for milk to plastic jugs as far as something more locally available/sourced is concerned.

I'm writing a story, and I've realized I know almost nothing about what different families look like across the world, and what terms are common or not. From the US. My family was pretty loose as far as honorifics went. I certainly never had any godparents and didn't know what they really were well into my teens. We called our aunts and uncles by their name sometimes with aunt or uncle in front, but usually not. The exception would be my mother's aunt who we all referred to as aunt henri (Henrietta), but that was basically it. I only had maternal grandparents so they were simply known as granny and grampa as there wasn't a need to distinguish between 2 sets of grandparents. My familial upbringing was a bit odd insomuch as my parents didn't really have friends that they spent time with. My dad stayed in touch with one guy he knew from high school and that was pretty much it. My parents would interact and be amiable with people at church, and do church related activities with them occasionally, but it was still fairly infrequent. I was essentially forbidden to call my father by his name as it was disrespectful for some reason. I never felt the need to try it with my mother though. Certainly my father was more of a dominant type where his opinion is the only valid opinion than my mother was. It led to some conflict between us (my siblings, myself vs our father), being the 3rd out of 4 children I learned to essentially become somewhat passive and just say I agreed to whatever he was going on about rather than deal with a long tirade of whatever the hell he was adamant about. This is because I saw my elder sister and my brother get into these long drawn out arguments with him that went nowhere. There wasn't any sort of explicit rudeness or derision on his part within any of this though. Just an adamance that he had to get his way/it was his house and he made the rules type of thing.
