A question about USPS:

I need some cardboard stiffener for some books I'm shipping, and I'm thinking of using one of those free boxes to do the job. Since the boxes state that they are solely to be used for Priority Mail shipping, and I'm planning to ship the books using Priority anyway, would it be legal to use them in this way?

I've got a guy with zero feedback bidding on a whole bunch of my books on an auction site (not Ebay).

From his comments, I'm 90% sure he's legit, but how do I cover my rear end in case he tries to file a PayPal claim or perform a chargeback?

This same guy's claiming that he can't use his PayPal and is asking me to accept a money order from Canada (he's Canadian). Should I trust him, and are there any scams related to this that I should be wary of?

Rather than me walk to the post office tomorrow, I'd rather be lazy and ask goons. I sold something on ebay (a DLC code) and to cover my rear end I'm going send a page with the codes since officially that's what they bid on. Anyways I'm trying to figure the cheapest way to send this page with delivery confirmation through USPS, from my understanding I could get delivery confirmation on first class mail only if it's not a letter (totaling about a $1.75 based on ebay label printing) or I could mail it as a letter and end up paying ~$3.20 for Certified Mail (which seems require signature on delivery, which I think might be too complicated).

Should I just fake a package for this thing and send it that way to get delivery confirmation or is there a better way?

(Also dudes a rather newly registered ebay account so my paranoia alarm is going off and I want to cover all bases.)

You're allowed to send a box filled with basically nothing, yeah.

With PayPal's seller policies the way they are, though, if the guy wants to screw you, you'll be screwed. Even if you send him a letter, he can just claim that it's empty or doesn't contain the code or that the code was already used or whatever, and you'll lose your money; you may as well send it to him via e-mail at this point.

All right, this is too short for E/N, so into this thread this goes.

I found out a while ago that my younger sibling is a brony. At first, I thought that he was just a fan of the show. But now he goes on pony sites, has almost nothing but brony friends, reads pony fanfics non-stop, and can't shut the gently caress up about loving ponies. He's just reaching adolescence, so I'm worried that at this rate, he'll be jerking off to pony porn while wearing a Rainbow Dash (his favorite pony, I think) ponysuit. Ponies.

What should I do? Is there anything I can do to stop this?

I know, it's just that he's got emotional issues (he's being homeschooled because he couldn't handle the social pressures of middle school), and I've seen how terrible adult bronies can be, so I'm worried that he might not grow out of it :ohdear:

The apparent obsession part doesn't sound very healthy. Provide alternative things to do, especially things like sports. Don't refer to the show in either in a positive or negative way. Homeschool thing doesn't sound very good. He could use RL friends.
The "brony community" can be really intoxicating for people who are shy with few/no friends but not actually asocial. He's not going to move away from it until he has RL friends to fill the gap.

The thing is that my parents used to make him do extracurriculars to try to get him some social contact, including martial arts and some other sports. But now he's cut everyone off, and he sits in front of the computer all day talking to bronies. He does like to compose dubstep, but he's doing it because of bronies.

I've asked my parents to try to get him therapy, but they don't believe in psychology so I don't know what to do. Should I just let him go do his own thing and hope for the best?

I have a bunch of stuff I want to sell, stuff like books, DVDs, blu-rays, video games of all kinds (including old stuff, but stuff like PS3 too), almost all good or great condition. I want some return on the stuff, but I care more about getting rid of it in a straightforward manner because I want to move out and not have tons of baggage. I don't really want to set up an SA-MART thread to sell everything one by one and spend all my free time managing that.

Is there anything I can do or is it better to donate most of it and sell only the more saleable items?

You'd probably be best off putting up just a few high-return items and donating the rest if you're moving; otherwise, it'll take a long while before you manage to get rid of everything. You could try selling or auctioning off your less saleable stuff in lots, too, and try making a little bit on the stuff that normally wouldn't sell.

Ten days ago, I started having a cold. I took sudafed, I took vitamins, I did all I could. It seemed to finally be on the wane. Today I find out it's become an ear infection and I'm on antibiotics. This happens to almost all the colds I've had since moving to Iowa 4 years ago.

My question is - would it make sense to NOT take any medicine? Try to let it be WORSE earlier so I can get on the antibiotics sooner, so I can deal with being sick for 5 days instead of two weeks?

Unless your infection is severe, you probably shouldn't be taking antibiotics at all; unnecessary use of antibiotics is what causes drug-resistant strains of bacteria to form.

I'm sending a book to Germany as a gift using USPS flat rate shipping. I know how to do this kind of thing domestically, but what extra steps, exactly, do I need to take to ship internationally? I've read guides and have a general idea, but I want to be 100% sure that this thing doesn't get held up in customs for too long or returned to sender.

So I completely disregarded goon advice and took a money order for the stuff I'm selling to this Canadian guy.

I asked him for a postal order but got a Western Union order: when I told him about it, he said that he didn't really know the difference and just went to a Money Mart to get the money sent. He also said something about being mugged and having to get new cards from the bank.

I got the order # and amount confirmed through WU's phone number (though I heard that some scammers can get around this), deposited it a few hours ago, and told him that I'd send him his stuff once the thing cleared.

How plausible is his story, and how paranoid should I be about this?

A lot of dogs behave oddly around me as I walk by them. Some of them bark at me, some of them keep their distance and growl, and others walk up to me and start sniffing at my shoes until their owners have to leash them in.

I maintain proper hygiene and don't act or dress unusually, so those can't be the issues, and so far as I'm aware, this doesn't happen to anyone else I know. Is there some psychological reason that they do this?

I'm fine with them, it's just that it's only dogs that react strangely, not cats or birds or any other animals. It's weird and I'm beginning to wonder whether I'm exuding some malevolent spiritual aura that can only be detected by dogs.

I think it's because high-radioactivity stuff first decays to low-radioactivity stuff before it finally decays to non-radioactive stuff.
Also maybe the thing about the equipment, but I'm curious to know if that's really true: I thought that if you irradiated something inert, that thing remained inert afterwards. So for example, if I were exposed to nasty radiation and got really hosed up, I still wouldn't be emitting dangerous radiation myself.

This applies to alpha, beta, and gamma radiation, but fission reactors rely on neutron radiation to split atoms and generate energy. If these free neutrons strike an atom that isn't part of nuclear fuel, they can become absorbed and change its isotope to turn it radioactive.

If UPS decides to wreck your package, what documentation do you need to prove an item's value when filing a claim?

I've got an item that sold for $2,000, but it's a fairly obscure collectible, so there's no predictable market price for it (it can range from around $1,000 to over $2,000), unlike, say, laptops.

I may need to ship something in the future that requires shipping and certain other information to be affixed to the package in an easily removable/replaceable manner.

To you USPS employees out there: would it be possible to use the 2976-E customs form envelope in conjunction with domestic shipping labels or documentation, or do I need to use sleeves of my own?

Hair follicles are genetically programmed to grow to a certain length, then stop and eventually shed; the growth phase of human scalp hair just happens to be extremely long.

Is there any way to shift the color temperature of a photo after it's already been saved as an image?

I have a bunch of item photos taken using a warm light bulb as lighting, and I need them to be adjusted to look as if they've been taken in daylight because my camera isn't able to do it by itself. I can't use the flash, either, because of problems with reflective surfaces.

As an example: Picasa has 'colour temeprature' as an editing option.

I need something that can save images as PNGs. What other solutions are out there?
