Can anybody in the UK tell me how to convince TV licensing inspectors that I am not watching TV as it is broadcast?

My last flatmate paid for the license last year and watched TV all the time. My new flatmate and myself almost never watch TV so decided to go all the way and forgo it entirely this year. I've just sent the email to the TV Licensing people informing them that a license is not needed at this address.

So far, I have packed away the freeview box and removed the plug at the end of the old coaxial cable so that it can no longer connect to the TV.

Is this enough? I've read in the past that some people have resorted to filling the aerial sockets on the TV with epoxy to prove that it cannot be used to receive broadcasts, but this is a rented flat and it is not my TV so I don't feel comfortable permanently damaging it.

Edit: I probably ought to mention that it's been a while since the last flatmate moved out and the old license expired, so the inspectors may well be assuming that we are lovely students who are trying to dodge out of paying. The letters they were sending were addressed to the last flatmate, but are very obviously TV license related so I guess I should have opened them straight away to start this process

You simply send the letter/email to them. That is all you need to do.

(really, technically, you should give the freeview box to a friend to hold, as the license is a license to own receiving equipment, but they will never search your house)

Anything they send to you after this point, you just resend them a copy of the original submission.

On the small off-chance that they send someone to your door (unlikely), you just verbally explain the situation again. They do not have the right to enter the property.

Oh, read this site: http://www.bbctvlicence.com/index.htm

Even if you were illegally watching TV, they will only ever send letters to you.

Hm I had actually seen that website a while ago. I guess I was really looking for a way that I could just clear it with them and not have to be receiving letters for another year. Thanks though, I'll read over that stuff again.

Can anyone recommend a good online guide on learning to sing? I'd like to become better at it (just for fun, not to perform or anything) and there are a lot of websites out there purporting to teach it, I have no idea which ones are any good.

What kind of singing?

This isn't really answering your question I guess but I know a lot of singers (musical family) and they would all say that one of the key things a (real) singing teacher does is expose you to new repertoire based on your voice and your ability. I'd try to find a teacher (or site) which specialises in the style you want, so that they would hopefully have a wide range of songs within that style.

That said real teachers are also important because it's very easy to make mistakes with your technique and never notice them, and lessons in person have much better chances of spotting and correcting that. I know you said 'just for fun' but it is possible to harm your voice by singing 'wrong' so you want to be a bit careful. Teachers are fallible too however and there are a great many poo poo ones in the field that the singers I know work in.

TL;DR I know jack about singing websites but be careful with making your choice... I guess you already knew that!

Why doesn't anyone who makes maps for public places rotate the maps to face what direction you are facing? It seems so easy and would help people get to their place faster.

Also doing this would probably confuse a far greater number of people, because while some people may find maps hard to read, the convention that North is Up is so strongly reinforced in every other way that maps are used.

I sleep on a futon and love it, but my girlfriend says it hurts her hip to lie on her side (which is how she sleeps. So do I though so YMMV.) We'll probably get something different in the future :(

Try a futon though, they're great. You can get frames for them but they aren't necessary, I'd just use it on the floor for a short time.

Only thing to watch out for (with mine) while sexin' is that there are a few buttons on it that sometimes really hurt my knees if I move around and forget about them.

My mother is English and has always put milk in her tea, but I find it unnecessary and often distracting of what I consider the pleasant natural flavors of the tea. Is it really considered "gross" over there to not put milk in your tea?

I don't think it's gross, but I do prefer tea with milk. It also really depends on the tea.

Kind of an odd one, but can anybody tell me what genre/type of book I'm thinking of? They had a simple plot to them, and it was completely linear, but each page had a bunch of stuff to do on it. "The evil wizard trapped you can you find all 7 keys to escape?" type stuff. Find the path through the Canyons of Woe! They were really beautifully illustrated for the most part. A glorified Where's Waldo, but I really enjoyed those books as a kid.

I remember one book in particular, it had 3 separate stories in it. One was about fighting a dragon I think, the other had a wizard that could shapeshift? Last one was something about aliens?

I think my little brother would absolutely love something like those for Christmas, but I don't even know where to start when it comes to finding one.

I remember books like this too, but I can't remember their names. They had lots of them in my library at primary school. I think I bought one and might still have it along with my other books from when I was a kid, I'll have a look when I get home.

Is the extra $150-200 really just for durability?

In my experience, there is a small improvement in durability but cases get beaten up horribly anyway and it doesn't contribute to a longer life that much.

I've found that small differences in material and design can be significant though - better wheels on a wheelie case can make it MUCH easier to drag around.

The best orchestral players in any given country will tend to rise to the top and form very good orchestras. Orchestras from "Eastern Europe" are no exception, and they are usually significantly cheaper than the best US or UK or Western Europe groups.

So often, if a rock band or other contemporary musical outfit want to have an orchestra for a recording they'll get a very good ensemble from Czech Republic or Hungary or somewhere in that region for comparative pennies.

Edit: This may be an overly simplistic explanation but my stepdad is a conductor who has worked a lot with an orchestra in Hungary and this is the impression I get from him.

I just want to bang on some timpanis, shred on a contrabass, or jam on a harp, if only for a day. :downs:

Get a job at a music school, or college department.

In my experience, despite most students having their own instruments, places like this have huge cupboards full of instruments ranging from mundane to exotic.

You'd probably have to be good at your job and all, but opportunities to have a jam would come up. You'd probably have to work there a while to get a chance on everything.

Also you'd have to not break any of them (especially the first one you try!)

My stepfather is trundling along with a crotchety old computer that was new in 2002 because he's convinced it's 'not that bad' and that he doesn't want to 'start over' with a new one.

My brother in law and I have been trying to get it to run a bit better at least. Bro upgraded the RAM to the max supported and it's a little better but still painful.

I was having a look at it last night and thought that a faster hard drive could be a good fix, but what I'm not optimistic about is the max data speed of the motherboard. I suspect the motherboard is going to be too old to support a speedy hard drive or SSD.

Am I likely to be right? If more info is needed, where in Windows do I look for this?

This is probably the best idea. He's just very resistant to any change. The reason he was somewhat happy about just getting a new hard drive was because, to his perspective and limited understanding, 'most of the computer would be the same'.

I think mainly he's concerned that the way he interacts with the machine would change, so if I could minimise the difficulties of that transition I don't think he'd mind ... My mum is already talking about buying the new machine outright because we all think it would be good for him not to freak out about losing work to crashes all the time.

This is my bathroom window. As you can see, lots of people can see into it.

This hasn't been a problem for me because of the height of the window (about chest height) and therefore angles of viewing and the placement of my bits that people shouldn't be forced to see.

My girlfriend however isn't so fortunate and we'd like to find a way to stop people seeing in.

I don't want it to be permanent (like glass frosting paint) and I'd ideally like to be able to see out... I am wondering if there is some kind of polarising film that could be stuck to the window?
