When the Halo 3 announcement trailer came out in 2007, it was widely reported on some disreputable video game news sites that you could see the Master Chief's face through his visor. Bungie refused to deny the rumor outright and the rumors continued for a while and everyone forgot about it. Turns out in the Halo 3 beta you could see through the Master Chief's visor if you got into a vehicle and pointed the third person camera at another player at just the right angle. One of my favorite VG mysteries is "the ghost of lockout" who actually paid me a visit one time. I'm pretty sure it's just your friend joining your game and a bunch of unreleated latency issues.
