All the finalists were boring. I've watched every week and still went "oh right, that guy's here" when David first appeared on screen. Actually the whole season was pretty bad. Noel and Matt aren't really working, the bakes were pretty disappointing, and they kept picking out the people I liked.

Also the worst baker on the day won so it's left a particularly bad taste in my mouth.

The technical should have an ask the audience option.

Regardless of how much they're paid or how much is provided once you get on the show, it still takes a lot of baking to get good enough to appear. Equipment, ingredients, a large enough kitchen that you can actually do larger baking. Especially now it's been around long enough that people are literally having bake-off as a goal so they're specifically practicing weird things and large projects, it's not cheap to be a competitive baker.

Probably. The demographics this season seem very different. I get that it has to be people who can lock down in this manner but still.

In sorta related news I can't believe in I'm a Celebrity when they got pheasant they're like "Oh finally some normal food" when they've had rabbit, hare, squirrel and pidgeon. Is rabbit not normal food? What the gently caress?
To me pheasant is a far rarer thing to be eating.

When do you eat rabbit? I've only ever had it once, when my dad shot one with an air rifle when he spotted it going at the vegetable garden and then decided it would be interesting to try, and I've never heard of anyone actually having it regularly. Pheasant is a classic posh country person staple, if you know people who are into shooting as a sport (and don't stick to clays like a sane person) they almost certainly shoot pheasants, and pretty much all the ones they shoot will end up getting eaten. I've got family who do it a lot, I really don't get it (even aside from the ethics, it's not a fun activity), but it's a common thing.

And just in case you were wondering, neither rabbit or pheasant are particularly nice. I'd rather just have chicken or something.

I think a more interesting question is "When was the last good sitcom on UK TV?"
Derry Girls maybe? People Just Do Nothing if that counts? I'm not sure.

This Country definitely belongs on the list. I think Ghosts is fun too.

In all the sitcom chat I totally forgot about Garth Marenghi. I vote for that. I wish Matthew Holness did more stuff.

BBC2 appears to be showing the exact same thing as BBC1 at present, which is especially pointless.

I know someone who worked with him when he did theatre earlier in his career and apparently he was really good as a theatre actor. He does seem to be generally pretty good in scripted work and writing. Doesn't really explain why he keeps getting presenting roles though.

I honestly don't even know how to answer you at this point. Do I have to explain that the UK is part of the world? That if lots of people worldwide saw a thing then chances are lots of people you know did too? This is just baffling

chances are the majority of people you work with, go to school with, play football with, go to the pub quiz with, or whatever, are in the UK, not the rest of the world. Even for people online enough to be on SA, we're probably not doing most of our socialising on twitter or even here. If 15 million people in the UK watch something that's about 22% of the population, so in my office of 10 people maybe two watched it. If 15 million people in the world watch it that's about 0.02% of the population, so in my office of 10 people probably 0 watched it.

Wanted to check what Stephen Merchant was doing these days, and watched The Outlaws. An extremely early 2000s show inexplicably peppered with references to current events circa 2020s. It features a very disconcerted Christopher Walken who says words in a way Christopher Walken does and a set of extremely cartoonish stereotypes who later, through the power of friendship, reveal they have redeeming qualities. It wasn't unenjoyable, but definitely felt slightly off the entire time. During filming, they also destroyed a real Banksy graffiti, so the show has that going for it.

I tried this and it seemed like it couldn't work out what it wanted to be. The first episode felt a whole lot like a half hour comedy type thing then just kept going and ended up as a dark thriller with no jokes. Does it even out or go one way or the other? I'm kind of interested if it keeps it light hearted but I dont need too much misery and threat right now.

You can get a cheap indoor tv aerial for about £15 on amazon/ebay/your local electronic shop (if such a thing still exists where you are), assuming its somewhere with decent signal - so not the depths of the countryside or buried deep in a nest of high rises.

Someone at work recently put me on to All That Glitters, the jewellery making one on BBC. The process is really interesting and some of the stuff they end up with is beautiful, and while Katherine Ryan and the judges aren't always hugely compelling they're definitely not off-putting in the way that Bake Off's current crew is.

Death in Paradise is my go to easy TV. It's the perfect level of compelling to allow you to engage as much or as little as you want without ever inducing any feelings of stress or anxiety about what's happening on screen, and it's got pretty scenery and fun characters and absolutely no-one is going to want to dissect it with me when I get to work on Monday morning. The perfect casual entertainment for when I'm feeling down.
