Great! So I'm assuming this will probably affect my brand new P8P67 Pro, right?

e: After further research, it seems that it'll affect this board. And the last thing I wanted to do was endure the noise my processor made when clamping it into the mobo again. That poo poo is awful.

Yeah installing coolers is the only thing I don't like. It used to be worse though, I have some bad memories of installing old cpus and almost destroying them.

No kidding. I have memories of my father giving me a new motherboard+cpu for christmas as a kid, then him having a screwdriver slip while installing the cooler and cutting a bunch of data lines on the board. Thankfully it's never happened to me.

Traditional design verification tools wouldn't have caught this (and they aren't expected too either), because it doesn't seem to be a logic error, more of a manufacturing/layout issue. One of the Intel goons might be able to comment further (they probably can't) but I assume they either modified the layout (perhaps the placement of certain logic was tricky for manufacturing) or manufacturing process to solve the issue.

Better question is when the new chips are going to be flowing out. There are still huge stocks of trays containing 6-Series PCHs sitting in Taiwanese factories. Intel hasn't let my company know if they're going to replace the now essentially defective trays of PCHs sitting in our warehouse.

Thanks for the answer! There is a good write up on Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4142/intel-discovers-bug-in-6series-chipset-begins-recall

Any chance Intel will allow swapping/upgrading boards to the ones that can do quicksync while still using a dedicated GPU for gaming or other things?

Yeah same here. Anyone know what the return process might be like for a thing like this? I'd rather not be without a motherboard for the several weeks I'd bet it'll take to get a new one.

BURLAP SATCHEL OF CRACKERJACKS

That's interesting, I was running into a problem where the system disk would suddenly disappear and then Windows would bluescreen. I replaced the SATA cable and the problem resolved. I'm pretty sure the disk was plugged into a 6Gbps port at the time so it could have just been coincidental.

I don't want to take this drat thing apart.

If you want to see if you're affected by the bug, try running Crystal Disk Info. I suspect that this would manifest as logged Ultra DMA CRC Errors, so if you're using the SATA300 ports and have those logged, you could be experiencing the issue. Other possible causes for UDMA CRC Errors include bad SATA cables and anything that can cause data corruption, like RAM issues.

Actually it's a billion dollar mistake.

$700 million to deal with fixing the problem (OEM replacements, etc.) and $300 million in lost revenue from the stop-shipment. The $300 million will be made back, at least.

And I don't feel bad for Intel in the least.

I :spergin: when it comes to cable management/the innards of my PC case, so it's more of a 15 minute job for motherboard replacement/cooler re-install than a 5 minute job.

Really though, like an above poster said, I would like an advance RMA where I get the new board first and then I use a pre-paid shipping label to send it back. Then I just re-configure BIOS real quick, update my router to new MAC address and am hopefully up and running again.

Fun thought: think of all the wasted MAC addresses!

The IGP hardware accelerated decoding (IIRC) will put out 24.000, not 23.976. It's such a loving :spergin: complaint, the CPU alone is more than powerful enough to decode 1080p H.264 with more flexibility than any hardware accelerated solution. No need to worry about resolution or encoding options, it just plays back.

It's a good thought, but gently caress hardware accelerated decoding. 4 years ago a C2D E6400 could power through 1080p H.264 with retard number of ref-frames without any GPU help.

While there Intel goons that work on related projects, or on different areas of the Cougar Point team; no one who was involved in directly in debugging this failure or in the design of the SATA analog circuitry has an SA forums account.

It's essentially everyone that home-built, because for Newegg to ship us our boards, they would have had them sitting in their warehouse well in advance. Who knows how far in advance OEMs like Lenovo and Dell got their stock to begin building boards with.

BIOS development for SNB was as early as this past September, so there's a lot of these suckers in the wild (though obviously in this case, chips out this early weren't for general availability)

Gah, reassuring myself that buying an all new system on the 26th "is totally worth it because I'll get one eventually, why not now" is backfiring.

So let me get this straight, to solve this issue all I would have to do is return my motherboard for a new one once they start doing exchanges?

There's no point in calling retailers about your boards when the manufacturers just learned about the issue today. Give them a couple days to get things figured out, it's not like fixed versions are even available yet.

Probably a dumb question but I ordered the ASUS P8P67 and it comes with two 6.0 SATA ports and two Marvell 6.0 SATA ports. Since I'm only going to be using 3 hard drives I can just use the 6.0 ports and be fine correct? Also what's the deal with Marvell ports and are they better than the regular ones?
