Yeah, they sent the ONE big "bad" guy that's been teased and actually developed this whole time into the ether. Since then, the comic has completely lacked direction and you can follow the author's thinking as he flails chapter to chapter to make someone stick.

Read up to the part where a fairy dressed like Joseph Stalin tells Annie she's a selfish, life-threatening rear end in a top hat. Past that point, the comic is like watching a writer with dementia slowly and very sadly progress into oblivion.

You guys are forgetting the part where two of the coolest characters in the comic "died" by merging together, and the resulting character embodies the phrase "less than the sum of its parts" more than ever humanly thought possible

The fact that this could apply for two separate merge events kinda highlights how prevalent merge narratives are in this comic.

No worries, that was just done to make sure his death sticks when he sacrifices himself later for some arbitrary reason. Annie isn't allowed to have friends or people who care about her by the time the comic is over you know.

Wait, actually, imagine what nonsense Loup would introduce retroactively into the world if he actually became part of the Ether. Would he rules-lawyer his way into immortality by going "if I sincerely believe I can resurrect myself it will become so!" or something like that?

...Would he become a real boy to stay with Lana? Is this a stealth Pinocchio retelling?

Two of the dog gods merged into a teenage boy's Sonic OC, who did a lot of destruction and killing but now is pretending to be a teenage boy, who's now dating, which is supposed to make it sad that the previous protagonist of the comic is prophesied to 'kill' him. And the court has this master plan to use magic to gently caress off to another planet where there's no magic, but nobody's been given reasons to care about that.

That's genuinely the most coherent summary I can come up with at the moment.

Gunnerkrigg pulled a homestuck: pulling out extra clones of the main character then unceremoniously ditching them, killing the compelling and well-established threats to replace them with an edgy meta villain that hasn’t yet accomplished anything and that looks like a sonic oc, all essential character development and discussion now happens off screen, the final arc is now about new characters no one cares for and their teenage lovelife in a way that cripples the last sense of urgency and threat while the original cast has been largely written off.

All that’s left is to Vriska-fy Kat.

My bet:

Kat will do something horrible in a way that fucks with the robots, and in an act of heroism Loup will attempt to protect/save Lana. He may get injured in the process. This is to make him endearing and further redeem him as a tragic antihero in love.

I place this bet because it is a common trash shoujo bad boy redemption plotbeat, and because I have no hope.

My personal bet is that Zimmy does something to threaten Annie's life, resulting in Kat killing her. It's already been a well-established theme that Kat will do anything for Annie, including "making an antigravity spacecraft" and "breaking time itself", and that Kat is capable of going down a much darker road if not for Annie's influence.

It is also going to be dumb and contrived as gently caress, and solvable in a way that isn't "kill Zimmy". But because the comic needs it to happen for the story to progress in the way the author wants it to, it's going to happen anyway.

I think Gunnerkrigg Court is an allegory for the American political system.

Annie (Democrats) is sucking up to a party she will never get the approval of but inexplicably still craves, thinking "this time will be different", while ignoring those directly in front of her stepping up to fill the role like Renard (blue-collar workers) or Eglamore (socialists). She actually briefly achieves some success with this when she splits into two with Forest-Annie (Centrism) who is different enough to be seen as separate, but when they merge together and return to her old self (the Democrats, but with the Overton window moved) he goes back to ignoring her.

Her similarly-minded but technically more progressive friend, Kat (Liberalism), in a relationship with Paz (the LGBT community), starts out initially hating Tony (Tony) but gradually grows to do the same bullshit, and isn't so different from Annie after all despite their perceived differences in worldview.

Meanwhile, Coyote (American conservatism) is a threat that Annie has long ignored or treated as quaint, and Ysengrin (Fascism) is a figure that Annie fights with but often outright embraces despite the dangers and his strong hatred of one race, and despite being beholden to her supposed allegiances with the Court (the increasingly dispossessed and disillusioned middle class) due to her elected position, who understandably fear Ysengrin and see him as dangerous.

She is confused and unsure how to handle their resulting fusion, Loup (the modern alt-right), and continues to appeal to his common decency in the hopes that some of his components still exist, not realizing that he is now chaotic, unpredictable, and misogynist. He unrepentantly masks himself as a friendly face (Twitter users). He has simultaneous protectiveness and distaste for Lana (Elon Musk), who flirts with Loup and desperately wants his attention despite not fully understanding him, and has been sometimes surrounded by unsavory types (Bitcoiners).

Secret because I don't want to imply that Tom Siddell wants American voters to forsake all political parties and move across the sea to create a socialist paradise.

I dug this one back up for Homekrigg Stuckourt chat. I think the person who said Lana being Elon Musk was too cruel owes me an apology now that Lana has thrown herself at Loup in the same way Musk has now fully embraced Twitter and is rapidly discarding any pretenses of not courting the alt-right.

Zimmy becomes increasingly convinced Annie works with the court for some reason. Jerrick convinces her to try to kill Annie for some reason, then Kat kills her.
