Finally got caught up on this comic. I know the thread is really down on it lately and it's definitely different than it was at the peak of its quality but idk I'm still enjoying it.

Yeah I hated him as a person but I really enjoyed him as a character and villain, then as a tragic character (whose actions were still reprehensible). At the time the writing read as an excellent if literal-metaphorical portrayal of a breakdown brought on etc etc. I don't believe we're meant to take human Annie as the correct one in that conversation.

But instead of even having a scene where she considers that and mulls over how to avoid it, we just get 'despite the warning, Kat kept doing Omega stuff'. And now she's ready to get a connection to Omega implanted directly, which will surely not lead to any bad consequences. Maybe it's arrogance because she already defied Fate once by saving Annie and sees no reason why she can't just pull that off again this time.

I think that was intentional. We keep hearing about Tony as this enigmatic figure and when he finally arrives he's almost this larger-than-life figure to Annie but then over the course of the next few chapters both she and we come to understand that he's actually not this all-knowing supervillain he's just a very fundamentally broken person on top of what was already a pretty crippling inability to connect with people. It's just another variation of children seeing their parents as these all-powerful beings and then coming to realize that they're just people no different than anyone else, and I think his initial eerieness ties into that.

I actually liked The Mind Cage because I thought it was going to be the start of a "humanization arc" with Tony, but all of his self-improvement had happened off screen (natch) and he's since been shoved out of the picture in favor of all the amazing new plot going on. Too much stuff going on to focus on character development! I wonder if this comes down to how poorly mind cage was received. Maybe he scrapped everything at that point

I think it’s also going to depend on how the pocket dimension pays off later. Nothing major went wrong but we got to see that it existed and so if/when something major happens later we know it exists rather than it just being introduced out of nowhere later on when Annie needs to go there after Kat’s gone fully off the rails

Even if he just hit some kind of breaking point and mentally checked out, speeding through an outline to the end just to finish the drat thing but not putting in the effort of writing it anymore

What if Loup just is supposed to suck? Like maybe that’s Coyote’s whole plan: die so he can learn what it’s like to die, then have Annie kill Loup so he can somehow be reborn, and so Loup was *designed* to suck because his job is basically just to get killed so the real main character can come back

Loup should be a fundamentally tragic character. A cosmic joke. A being created for the sole purpose of being killed, with no hope of carving out a destiny for himself. His very existence is nothing more than the last prank of a divine trickster, and being stabbed to death is the punchline. There’s a lot to work with and that’s a shame
