100% this. My brother and I played a tonne of Tales of Destiny together. It was always worth giving up a ring slot for Combo Command. By endgame we had worked out the timing for a combo that was deleting trash mobs in seconds and bosses in not much longer. I haven't played a Trails game since Vesperia, which was okay, and honestly just assumed Combo Command was still in.

Speaking of which, you should check out Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. By default the attacks are bound to Direction + Triangle and some sub-pallets by holding another button. It allows for easy access to most of your moves. You can however just change it over to fighting game style inputs though. Not only can you have every single attack available at will, you can also customize the inputs to be almost anything you want. The whole game just played like butter.

Edit: Regarding controller talk, one of my friends beat the first 5 Assassin's Creed games on PC using KB+M. With Full-Snyc. I genuinely don't know how.

That part is awful and pointless but nothing else in CS3 gets quite that bad--mostly just lots of offputting Tita/Agate or Rean/Musse shippers.

Okay, I'm glad to hear that. That particular scene was just way over the line from what I expect from the series.

I am not remotely thrilled about Tita/Agate stuff but also not surprised. Rean/Musse is weird to but Tita and Agate having anything but "they are big brother and little sister" is a huge Nope. Unfortunately I have long since learned that Trails as a series isn't going to let the Adoptive Brother/Sister Romance and Crushes go.

I know, that was the point. People play games in unfun but 'optimal' ways if they think those ways are optimal.

Tales of Phantasia

I bought Tales of Phantasia back when it came out for the GBA, however many years ago that was. My only memory of it is that I made some progress in it, dropped it for a while, then when I picked it up again, I had no idea how far along I was, or what I was supposed to do next.

From what I remember reading, the GBA port is the worst of the ports. I found out, though, that there was a PS1 port, and that it got a translation patch. I thought about playing that version, but typically I like to ask about games before I start them.

Additionally, did the PC version Tales of Symphonia ever get fixed? I remember it had issues when it launched on Steam, and I remember the GeDeSaTo guy was working on a patch for it or something, but I forget what happened. From what I remember hearing, the PC version was actually a port-of-a-port (in that it was based on the PS2 version, which was based off the GameCube version), and I remember it was suggested to just emulate the original GC version (though I remember one version had additional content).

the phantasian productions tl patch for phantasia psx is the best tl the game's ever gotten, it has a few slightly questionable bits but it reads really well and has some pretty great translations for some of the trickier jokes in the game's script. i don't really like the psx version though for the aforementioned spell animation stuff, but as far as playing phantasia in english goes it's your best option by far

the pc version of tales of symphonia is... playable, but it still runs in 30fps. durante's never worked on it, the guy working on it was kaldaien who's... well. people like his nier automata fix but i wouldn't say he's as reliable. anyway he didn't seem to have a ton of interest in fixing the frame cap, he went as far as saying he'd fix the overworld running in 30fps but if that didn't fix combat he wouldn't bother working on it past that because he doesn't think making the combat run at 60fps is worth it lol. in any case the extra content is still in the pc port but... i wouldn't say it's worth it, just play on dolphin

I think what surprised me with the translation of the PSX version is reading that the PS1 version added in a thing where the characters can converse on the world map, and that the translators added subtitles for those sections.

Changing dialog is one thing, but doing that sounds pretty impressive, because I imagine that could easily break that game.

-

I think the reason why I thought Durante made a patch was because he wrote an article for PC Gamer about the port. As a result, I thought maybe he had made something for Tales of Symphonia, like he did for Dark Souls.

I guess I can try emulating the game on Dolphin (though I'll have to figure out where I can download find it). Out of curiosity, though, what does the additional content consist of?

Honestly by that point you should probably have Alice or Daisoujou and just be able to trivially walk through any floor that isn't a boss floor and probably any boss floor too.

The floor count is a bit much but at least your power level by that point is so high it goes by a lot quicker than lower floors.

it's some new costumes, a few new artes, and a casino, mostly. none of it is stuff that really felt like it impacted the game enough to be worth having

if you care about the cutscenes the port also has lots of weird bugs, like a voice acting bug that really badly impacts one of presea's biggest scenes so all of the voice acting is bizarrely swapped for no reason at all. this bug has existed since the ps2 port. there is no fix.

Yeah, Bug Fables is just We Made Our Own Paper Mario, With Literally Almost No Changes. And that's absolutely what they were going for and that's fine and dandy.

Honestly my big problem with it is that the paper aesthetic makes almost no sense for it. Like yeah, I get it, 'fable' and all that, but it feels a lot more like it is Paper because Paper Mario was Paper and that's a bit disappointing because they could have done something more unique visually with it without losing the "We're making Paper Mario Gaiden" feel.

the paper mario aesthetic is great for indie devs because it's intentionally low poly for the environments and while it does require more spritework than a full-3D game, it still needs a lot less than a full-on 2D game. So it's lower cost than most normal art styles (or so I assume), while still looking great

Paper Mario at least plays around with the aesthetic with Mario himself being visibly made out of paper and the paper theming going into the environment, in comparison to BF which is just what it is. It's a minor complaint but it does make it feel more Knockoff than Homage if you get what I mean?

Haha, well, we'll see. I started it recently and it feels like it's be tremendously inaccessible if you hadn't played the previous games.

"Oh, it's 'that man' from 'that adventure.'" "Oh! Rean, it's good to see you. Do you remember 'that time?' " "Ah... that time. *quick flash to a sepia toned image of a character who may or may not be from the previous game*" "How could I forget? That was a good time"

Although I do suppose that it's NISA instead of XSEED now which basically explains my question upon further thought.
