Just a quick question from someone who doesn't have a clue: are those RPG Maker games completely free, legal to install as executables without requiring anything else to be on the system first? (ie, you don't need RPG Maker or anything else to be installed already?)

So I've played the hell out of pretty much all the Infinity Engine games and just recently got myself a MacBook. Now, it's no PC (oooh, burn... etc) and I do like me some gaming from time to time, so I bought CrossOver and have got a couple things to work on it, but was wondering if there are any good RPGs that work natively on the Mac (finished KOTOR so no love there, and I tire of Diablo after 10 minutes), so maybe you can suggest a decent GOG game or a Mac-native RPG for someone who loved the Inifnity Engine titles, the Neverwinter Nights games, Dragon Quest IX on the DS, seriously dislikes random encounter combat, favours stories over Diablo style number games, and so on. Lately I've been playing the hell out of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and 5. Love that series.

Maybe it is time for me to try TOEE again, after all these years (last time I got stuck with some bug when you had to kill a giant frog or some-such in a swamp. Couldn't search it when it was killed, so I could not progress with the game).

Also, Planescape. Hmmm... played maybe 10-12 hours of this back in 2008 and that's a lot to get through all over again, so while I know it is World Best RPG Story and I am living in sin by not having finished it, I dunno if I can go there just yet.

Suggestions?

Cross-posting this with the GOG thread.

I'm doing a story on the making of Planescape Torment for Retro Gamer magazine. I'm interviewing a number of the leads on the project, and given this awesome opportunity, I'm extending an offer out there to the goons to suggest some questions I should ask the crew.

Anyone?

Guys, what is the best way to play Final Fantasy 7 these days? Download it on PS3 and play there? Play the original on an actual Playstation? Get the Ultimate PC edition?

BadAstronaut
Sep 15, 2004

Oh ja? What, if anything, makes the Ultimate Edition worth getting?

Seems to me like getting an old PS original and playing in ePSXe is the way to go...

BadAstronaut
Sep 15, 2004

Thanks for the FF7 info, guys. Looks like I am gonna wait for my travels to be over and just play it on ePSXe some time in the future.

Now. Dragon Quest on the DS. I played the gently caress out of IX. Loved it. Wow, what a good game. Of the others, though, I'm a little worried about committing to one and finding it a shallow grind-fest later in the game. Which, of IV, V and VI, is the best overall package? Or have I ruined these for myself by playing IX first?

BadAstronaut
Sep 15, 2004

So saying I do, and I ends up wantsing mores, will playing V ruin IV in any way?

BadAstronaut
Sep 15, 2004

Kinda bummed that we may have seen the last Dragon Quest game for DS. I don't really have much intention of getting a 3DS. Tried one and was not overly impressed - I don't know if I could sit on that doing nearly as long, solid sessions as I put into DQIX on my DS. And I have no intention of buying a Wii either. Shrug. Guess I will just do the trilogy (DQ IV, V and VI) and let that be that.

Also wish that they would release more solid RPG remakes on the iPhone. Come the end of the month, I'll be snatching FFT as soon as it comes out.

Thus ends my somewhat vacuous post.

Just posted this in the retro gaming thread but figured the goons in the RPG thread could also offer something:
I just got a PS3 again after about a year without one and I see both Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy IX are available as PSOne downloads. Can anyone comment on which of these I should get into first, does it even matter, and how do these two play on the PS3 on an HDTV?

Much more amped to just play IX now.

FF nerds, will it make *any* difference if I play IX before I play 4/5/6? Will it ruin/spoil any story stuff?

Chrono Trigger question, very simple:
I've just battled Magus for the first time and I'm simply wondering how far into the game I am. Maybe as a percentage complete or something?

I just browsed through the manual and - unless I missed it - did not see a single thing about augments. Is this all fully explained in-game? Is there a good FAQ somewhere that acts as a guide (and not a list of spoilers) for the augment thing?

And about the combat - is it super hard and grindy?

BadAstronaut
Sep 15, 2004

I kinda like that stuff though - using status spells. Come from a D&D gaming background, so buffing and debuffing is par for the course.

Thanks for the link, I will check that thing out.

As for Dragon Quest, I have only completed 4 and 9, both on DS and both of which I absolutely loved. I also have 5, 6 and 8 sitting on my shelf. Not scared of a bit of DQ, and I didn't find either 4 or 9 too grindy at all.

BadAstronaut
Sep 15, 2004

My experience of DQ is limited to 4 and 9, both on DS, and so I can not comment beyond those two, and I can only say that there were perhaps two times in 4 where I had to grind up a level or two to win a major fight, and even these were not huge great big slogs.

As for the rest of the series, :iiam:

Well, another post and another Chrono Trigger help request from me. I'm on what has to be the final battle of the game against Lavos after completing Black Omen and keep getting utterly and completely owned. Which party line up do you recommend for this battle, and can you give me some tips as to how to beat this guy?

You can also go through the Black Omen more than once in different time periods and refight the bosses for even more experience.

I have done every sidequest there is. My party at the moment is Crono, Lucca and Robo, but I think I can drop Lucca for someone else. Suggestions?

Answering my own question: Phantasy Star IV. This game loving rules, don't know why I haven't played it before.

Yes. It really, really is great. I'd love a hack that increases the walking speed by 50% or so, that would be awesome.

I've put so many hours into this game and never finished it. I reached what I *thought* was the final battle but just couldn't win. I ground out some more levels, fought again, couldn't win. This happened enough times for me to give up on it :( (And this was in 1999)

I then sunk quite a few more hours into it in 2008, picking it up again. Didn't finish it either... now I have it again on PS3, maybe I'll end up finishing it at last...

I tried PS3, but man... it just didn't grab me.

What's the general attitude around here to Final Fantasy XIII? I just got it on PS3 for next to nothing, fired it up for an idea of what it's about (I'm deducted to finishing Dragon Quest VI before I dive in to anything else) and I was kinda wtf at the first 5 minutes of the gameplay, thrown into some weird sci fi setting with a too cool afro sporting guy with a bird living in his hair and a powered up super hero woman fighting a massive machine. What happened to RPGs where I'm a 15 year old boy waking up in our cottage to the sound of my mother/father/guardian calling me for breakfast?

Is this game all hard sci fi action stuff?

BadAstronaut
Sep 15, 2004

Is it super grindy with an annoying amount of random combat? My initial impressions were not super positive. Maybe I'll give it five or six hours and decide from there...

BadAstronaut
Sep 15, 2004

Heh, wow there is a lot of nerdrage in the last few pages.

As a change of pace, are you guys able to play more than one RPG at a time? I'm asking because I have Dragon Quest VI going on the DS... about 9 hours in and it has slowed down a bit after I defeated Murdaw and now have to find my stone statue or some poo poo and I have Mass Effect 3and Dragon Age both sitting unplayed on my PC, and I am kinda tempted to give those a go. But I usually only mix my gaming across genres to avoid being in two epic fantasy worlds at one time, and that these are all like 30+ hour grand adventures.

I asked a similar question in the Android thread but thought I'd check in here too...

Anyone here played Final Fantasy III on both DS and Android? Or even the DS version alone? I can probably get the DS version second hand for cheaper than the Android version, but want to know if it is worth just forking out for it on Android if there are any advantages to playing this version?

I still have FF IV sitting in my DS backlog but figured I should play FFIII first - or not?
