My 2nd full length album is out now!

https://soundcloud.com/michaelnixmusic/sets/technicolor-dreamboat

And Bandcamp:

https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/album/technicolor-dreamboat

I'm really proud of how this turned out. All of these songs were written and produced in the last 6 months except for Neuroticism, which was written almost 10 years ago and subsequently denied by every band I've ever joined, despite it being one of my favorite pieces of music I've written, and definitely the weirdest solo I've written:

https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/track/neuroticism

If you like it, please share it out. Every bit helps!

I finished rearranging one of my songs for a String Quartet, just a loose mix and bit of pre-mastering to make it easier to listen to:

Had to even write all the sheet music for it which is something I have never done before - was fun.

I will check this out this evening, love the cover / concept. Also Singular Point was great :)

Checking it out, I like this a lot man. Very cool project. Thank you for allowing free downloads! I dig the sounds you're using here, smooth but crunchy. Neat samples too.

Edit: Here is a link to a post I made on my blog, featuring a track I made recently that is inspired by the Sega Genesis' compositional limitations (but just inspired, it isn't VGM). Included in the post are two Amplitube 5 Max guitar patches from the track as well. If you don't care about the blog post where I go into a little detail about the recording and tools, I think this should go to the track directly on soundcloud.

I just started getting into synths from guitar about a year ago and gave already popped out 2 full lengths. Working with midi is really easy.

This series was really helpful as a quick primer when I was starting out: https://youtube.com/watch?v=xyVFIPtOsm8

I've always wanted to compose for video games, so I decided to build out a CV by writing music for a made up game. The first two songs, representing the pre-start screen text crawl and a demon haunted beach level, are available here, and I'll be updating that playlist as I write and record more.

drat, nice work. 4:40 worth of music is a lot more than you’d think! I’m a sucker for strings, and this is making me want to muck around with strings VSTs. Maybe after I do more synth stuff.

I’m a big fan of the idea that comes in around 3:17, it sounds almost pentatonic to my ears I think? Pentatonic scales sounds great on strings, IMO, I’d love to hear it more often.

(ngl tho i was expecting those run ups to turn into the zelda theme :shobon:)

Thanks! Yeah I love strings but there can always be a challenge when you have really high notes being played that they don't sound too 'whiny.' The Guarneri violin is wonderful at those registers.

I honestly couldn't tell you if it's pentatonic or not... I have basically no music theory knowledge and pretty much everything I make is just me putting down stuff I hear in my head and playing with it until it sounds 'right' to me.

There's been a couple of times where I'll start putting something down and be like wait that's way too close to the dark world theme from a link to the past or whatever.

I'm pretty sure that's the music I hear in my nightmares :v:

Everything but the contrabass was from the Cremona Quartet. Contrabass was from Spitfire's symphonic strings professional.

I turned it in to a full ensemble over the weekend and sped it up slightly:

https://soundcloud.com/poltzart/triumph

That's a mix of the Cremona Quartet, Spitfire's symphonic pro instruments, and Eastwest's Hollywood instruments.

Even with a Ryzen 9 5950X I had to record it in 3 passes to not get popping due to the complexity.

Nice! Sounds really good. If i'm going to continue murdering classical music I should probably invest in some decent strings.:)

The Overture from the EP I posted started to kill my PC so I had to freeze a bunch of tracks in Ableton which renders them and secretly replaces them with the rendered wav. Takes a load off the CPU usage.

Yeah, when something is supposed to sound 'real' I'm really picky about the sound of stuff.

I use a music notation program called Dorico so it's not so easy to 'freeze' tracks, and I am messing with them constantly. I only have issues when I have tons of stuff going. My next step is to build out a server cluster to do remote processing of the sounds so that I can run more/load more. It sounds insane but I'm actually constrained by the 128 GB of RAM I have. I could probably pretty easily fill half a TB if not more.

This is what that end part looks like in Dorico:

Kiwillian

Yikes!

A lot of the stuff I do has a generative element to it, so I don't even write it (lazy, huh?) :)

Here's an example:

https://open.spotify.com/track/39jImoYQo6bVU4SRiTCCJn?si=3ac5525c76804678

The bright synth-y sounding thing doesn't exist in any of the tracks that make it up. Also that part that starts around 1:56 where it goes all weird. I didn't do that either.

And most of this is just effect chain nonsense: (nothing is actually backwards)

Thanks! I made them one right after the other at the same tempo so I'm not surprised. Probably rename 'move it' to something even more cliched like first light. Going to make more in that style as it's pretty fun.

The BBC Discover plugin is fantastic, and the fact that they give it away for free is unbelievable. I have a lot of string/symphony libraries that cost many hundreds of dollars and I find myself firing up the Spitfire plugin more often than not because it's easy to use and sounds great. Not as flexible as some of the big libraries, but often you don't need all of the bells and whistles.
