If anyone's looking for more pinball on Steam to scratch that itch - there is a sale on the Zaccaria tables going on right now.

(Thanks to The Joe Man for pointing it out to me and gifting me their "Starter Pack")

They have a LOT of tables. The giant platinum collection basically groups it all up for you, but even at half off it's a good chunk of change and it seems like overkill.

But the starter pack for $5.47 is good.
https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/7514/Zaccaria_Pinball__Starter_Pack/

After Joe Man gifted that to me, I bought the starter pack plus to flesh things out.
https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/13889/Zaccaria_Pinball__Starter_Pack_Plus/
They do give you credit for things you own already, so the cost of the bundle was reduced down to $12 or so.

The hidden gem if you want a load of tables to mess with: the "27 retro tables" DLC
https://store.steampowered.com/app/974400/Zaccaria_Pinball__27_Retro_Tables/
If you buy an individual SS table DLC, it comes with an EM recreation of the same table as a bonus. Here's 27 of the EM versions for $1.99. Stupid value.

Word of warning I suppose. Zaccaria tables are NOT like WMS or Sterns. They're on the EM and early SS level of gameplay. If you're not into that - you might not want to bother. Though there are tables on the platform that do have better rule sets and DMDs, since I believe they just kept making more tables once they exhausted the actual real life Zaccaria catalog.

Also - it's been mentioned in this thread, but the options menu for these games is insane. The control over the physics, lighting, table condition(!) etc blows Pinball Arcade and Zen out of the water.

Edit:
Not sure on that price, but whoa. Looks like a pinball schmup.

Demon's Tilt is basically just a spiritual successor to Devil's Crush and Alien Crush on the PC-Engine, so you can check those out first to see if it's up your alley.

And hey, this whole situation might be a good opportunity to go back to some of the video game classics in lieu of physical pinball play. The Pro Pinball series still holds up, and if you want to go further back, you can probably still have a lot of fun with Epic Pinball for DOS or one of the Digital Illusions Amiga games (Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies and Pinball Illusions).

Hell, maybe we could organize a tournament on some of those classic games. It'd all be honor system, but we're already used to that anyway, I think.

are the physics in demons tilt as bad as they look from watching a video?

i get that its not trying to go for a pinball arcade style simulation but it looks like one of those old sonic pinball games or something

I think it's a fun game but the physics don't attempt to be at all realistic and it does take some getting used to. I love the Devil's Crush style aesthetic but $20 is too much for a single table, even if it's a really tall table with little side areas. For $20 you could get six Zen Williams tables. Luckily it's on Gamepass which is where I played it.

It's overpriced in terms of what $20 will buy you in digital pinball via other games (frankly I'm surprised the price points for Pinball Arcade and Zen Pinball were/are financially viable). However it's a really solid homage to Devil's Crush, has an excellent layout and enjoyable goals, is made by an indie developer, and graphically/aurally kicks rear end. I had no qualms buying it again at full-price to support the devs and cross my fingers they do an Alien Crush homage next. Or anything next. We need more throwback digital pins.

But I'm also the kind of moron that triple dips on each and every Farsight/Zaccaria/Zen table.

Yoku's Island Express is such a charming game :allears:, I started playing yesterday and am at around 30% completion with some new abilities. I hope it gets more challenging later because it's been quite chill most of the time (which maybe is for the best, to not scare people off). Worth a look imo.

To be fair it’s the only way to play digital versions of some of the newer Sterns for the foreseeable future. And while they aren’t up to the simulation physics of Zen’s newer tables, they aren’t bad.

Or any of the Gottlieb tables as well. Of course Gottlieb went off the cliff when tables went to SS. There's a few decent ones in there, but there's also a lot of filler. Their EM pack is a really good collection if you're into EMs, but you can play a metric ton of lesser EM tables with Zaccaria and enjoy them on a program that is absolutely light years better.

The modern Sterns run like absolute garbage though. Code/rules haven't been updated for AC/DC, Ghostbusters, and Star Trek (not sure about Trek, since I haven't played it for a while), and I've lost count of the number of times where the ball just goes right through solid elements of the playfield.

Playing TPA for any reason beyond learning rules of a game is not advisable.

This is an interesting idea: a pinball board game. I watched the demo video and the mechanics sound neat. Plus they have one of the 'tables' available for download and print since everyone is stuck at home right now.

They should be (and have been) publicly shamed for not updating the code whatsoever and basically abandoning it, while continuing to pimp it out on social media. Personally I could probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve had issues with the newer Stern tables (Ghostbusters is the main offender).

I live in a pinball oasis though, so if I want to play most of those tables it’s literally my only option. Save for when I travel overseas. There are a lot of pinheads out there without regular access to a variety of physical tables. In that respect Pinball Arcade still remains a reasonable option.

Tales from Pinside.....
(It's like the Freep thread - someone has to go there to get the good stuff, so you don't have to subject yourself to it on the regular.)

It's not done yet, but it's far enough along to be pretty interesting and cool.
A guy and his kid are doing a "Fury Road" homebrew.
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/witness-mad-max-fury-road-homebrew
Seems a lot of homebrew threads fizzle out and never get completed. This looks to be a cool case of someone that knows what they're doing.

EM Porn!
This got posted in a local EM Facebook group I'm in. A just stupidly nice "Gold Strike" (The add-a-ball version of "El Dorado" for those that played it on TPA.) As nice as I've seen, and priced to match sadly for me. I know a lot of people here aren't into EMs, but drat. You're dead inside if the photos don't make you drool.
