Last time I used dydns the typical downtime was ~2 hours and sometimes as long as a day, which is fine for "people can't play DoomRL online" but quite bad for "Mom can't access her photo backups or private email".

E: the main thing is email, where a minute of downtime isn't a big deal but a day of downtime is, especially if the IP gets reassigned to something else that starts rejecting MX connections rather than just timing out before the DNS gets updated. I've wanted to stop self-hosting email for a while now, though, this just makes it a higher priority. Finding an external mail host that meets our needs and doesn't hugely suck is going to be the hard part.

Maybe I can convince everyone to give up most of their aliases so that we can use Google Apps?

Aside from google apps you can get a vps or dedicated server for next to nothing now, you could even have a hybrid setup where you vpn out to a server then port forward 25 to your home server.

You can't really run an email server without a reverse dns entry now a days because it will get flagged as spam.

As much as I hate Bell, I'd have to do some serious soul searching if presented with that offer.... 1Gbps for the same price I'm getting 25Mbps now...

I hate rogers but I caved 2 years ago for 100/10 for $60. Then I tried to leave last month and they offered 500/20 for $25.

If the upload is slow enough, could it be possible that the TCP overhead of the download would be enough to choke it?

Yes, I use to have an 18/0.5 cable line like and my upload was almost saturated just downloading, a little faster and it definitely would choke. Thats with like 12 threads on usenet, a single connection would have less overhead.

The only time I watch cable tv is when I'm in a hotel, I turn it off in disgust after a few commercial breaks. I watch a few OTA channels and the ads are less annoying somehow.

I switched over to bell fibre and in lots of ways its the best you can get but man their peering sucks. Cloudflare is one of the largest cdns with servers in every major city and somehow my latency to 1.1.1.1 is over 100ms because its goes to california for some reason, 8.8.8.8 is about 8ms.

I just want to complain about bell, their peering sucks, I'm 19ms away from 1.1.1.1 despite it having a pop in every major city in Canada I get routed to Chicago so it can get logged by the pentagon.
I setup a free aws instance in Montreal and its 14ms away from me and 1ms away from 1.1.1.1, so if I routed 1.1.1.1 though AWS I would save 4ms.

I know it's a small difference but its just indicative of overall network quality and how you will get routed though America at every opportunity with bell.

I have bell fibre (HH3K bypassed) and it's great except it uses pppoe, no ipv6, no static ip option on consumer and the peering is pretty bad.
Bell doesn't peer with cloudflare in canada so all cloudflare protected sites which includes somethingawful.com are 10ms+ slower than they should be. I'm 8ms from 8.8.8.8 but 18ms from 1.1.1.1, they should be about the same because they are both in every large city.

I'm not sure when it happened but bell actually peers with cloudflare in candada now. Most of the internet now loads faster, including somethingawful.com.

I caught an employee downloading hundreds of porn torrent on a work computer while he was teaching a class. I passed it up the chain but nothing happened because the guy generated over a million a year in revenue. I only bothered to investigate because other people were complaining about slow internet.

I have 1gig but I can get 3gig for an extra $5 a month. I’m really contemplating it. I saw it was available then the next day somebody finally figured out how to bypass the home hub 4000, so it was meant to be.

What's the new bypass? You still have to use the GPON module in the HH4K right?

The gpon is soldered on. You buy this thing Azores 1x 10GbE 1x 2.5GbE Intel Based XGSPON ONT and telnet in to configure it. They are currently figuring out how to get vlan 36 working for iptv and phone. There is a discord but I don't know how you join it now. I might hold out until they figure out an sfp solution.

Yes I got the discord link off dslreports along time ago, I'm surprised it hasn't been posted on there, it's been a week.

The hh4000 is probably fine, but if you are a big nerd it's a black box of questional quality that's redundant because you rolled your own router and wifi. Also it has a hidden ssid that you can't disable from the gui, you have to run a script and it doesn't persist on reboot.

It's not really necessary, it's just for people that don't want to run any bell hardware just because they can. When you have bunch of enterprise gear the hh4000 is the weakest point of the whole setup.

So you can now bypass bell xgpon using an sfp+ stick, I ordered one in a group buy, should be here next month. Also learned dslreports is dead because of bad modding . All the smart people left for the discord and they don’t cross post.

Which SFP+ module? Is the group buy still open?

It's this EN-XGSFPP-OMAC-V2, the group buy is full at 40 units and it got the price down to 125USD plus shipping. There is a chance fs.com will release an SFP+ module thats compatible too.

The Discord is discoverable right now, just search for 8311 .

Bell has so many addresses you can have 4 of them using multiple pppoe connections.
