Updated the OP.

I'll try this out some time. I guess the interface only looks horrible to me, because I'm used to seeing those realistic knob and button graphics, which are probably wasting a lot of screen space anyway. It was a funny reaction though, because I bet if a layman would look at the iMS-20 he'd have the exact same reaction as with SunVox.

By the way, what's the difference between a tracker and a sequencer?

A tracker is actually a kind of sequencer, traditionally sample based. Wikipedia has a good article about them.

I've been using iSequence on my iPad and like it a lot. It's sample based and has a weird sort of sequencer that I really like, and recently got a bunch of nice effects. You can import your own samples and mess with them in the instrument editor interface, adding loop points and ADSR settings and whatnot. Really nice.

Intua, the company that made BeatMaker, has posted a feature list for BeatMaker 2, and it's pretty impressive. It's NanoStudio on steroids, basically. Hope it comes out soon.

BeatMaker 2 sounds really badass. It doesn't include a synth (just a sample based synth) but pair it with something like Nlog Synth or iMS-20 and you've got a drat good production setup.

Really though, something people seem to be glossing over in BM2's feature list is

quote:

High quality time-stretching and pitch-shifting algorithm

This will be the first time high quality time-stretching and pitch-shifting has ever been included in an iOS app. BeatMaker 2 could very well be iOS's Ableton Live-level DAW if Intua really delivers what they're promising.

An app called Rhythm Trax is coming soon for $5.99. This is the successor of a sequencer for the PSP called Rhythm. Features list makes it sound nice. UI looks a little strange though.

The OP should be updated to mention Filtatron and Multitrack DAW. Also, the "Effects & Utilities" section should really be renamed to "Sequencers & DAWs" since that's what most of those apps are.

Am I the only person really liking iSequence for iPad? It's such a great app once you import your own samples. The sequencer takes a few minutes to get used to since it's a bit different from most DAWs but it's really easy to lay down stuff, and effect automation is handled really well. It doesn't get anywhere near enough attention.

Those are just regular USB cables, as both of my keyboards can send MIDI data directly over USB.

Sure, I'll update the OP later. What I'm still looking for, is a DAW that comes with built-in synthesizers (and maybe some instrument samples), which is why I haven't tried iSequence yet. I'd love to have a package similar to Ableton on the iPad some day.

Coincidentally, it was recently announced on the iSequence forum that an additive synth is going to be added to iSequence in the future. CoreMIDI is being added in the near future as well.

BeatMaker 2 is up for sale on the app store, $19.99. So far it's pretty drat amazing, although some users are experiencing stability issues.

Apparently, FL Studio is coming to iOS for both iPhone and iPad. It will come with 40 free instruments and 50 more instruments will be available as in-app purchases. I can't find any pricing info yet.

It's pretty much confirmed that it's nothing more than a rebranded Xewton Music Studio.

GarageBand looks pretty nice but I wonder how the amps and effects will stack up against something like AmpKit.

DrumTrack8 seems pretty decent and is only $4.

This might be the thread to ask this: I want to record the audio output of my iPad onto my iPhone. Recording to the iPhone is a bit more limited since it can't use the camera connection kit. I was wondering if something like this would work?

It should work, but be aware that the iPad's audio output is line-level stereo and your adapter and the iPhone's mic is mic-level mono. Also, some people reported some static noise pollution when recording through such a splitter cable/device. If you try it out, I'd love to hear a trip report!

Yeah the mono issue is what I'm concerned about. I want to sample in stereo and it looks like recording into the iPad via the CCK is the only acceptable solution.

I'd like BM2 a lot more if its effects were better. NS' effects are better quality, plus the effects chaining UI is done well.

The presets included with BM2 are pretty lame. Honestly your best bet is to get a decent synth app like Sunrizer and create your own presets. It's not as convenient as having a built-in synth like NS has, but it works...
