Those blue-light blocking glasses work well for stopping those screen related headaches by the way, for me anyway

Jailbroke both my Kindles, pretty simple process! I haven’t really felt the need to replace the standard reader, but it’s nice to have the option in the future. Has anybody found a way to remove the lockscreen ads on jailbroken kindles?

What can a jailbroke Kindle do?

Basically install KOReader which opens up a lot of options and possibilities. But nothing ground breaking really I've found.

My Clara 2e fits in larger regular pockets "fine", just a bit of a squeeze. It fits in cargo pockets no problem whatsoever.
It's a good enough fit in my normal pants pockets that I bring it when I leave early enough for a movie.

Got a Kobo Libra Color. Absolutely loved it, wonderful device.

For 31 hours before it bricked itself and had to be returned.

Thankfully, their customer service approved an RMA pretty quick, but I'm back to my Paperwhite for the time being.

iirc the kindle jailbreak devs are colossal weenies about this, in order to avoid the risk of amazon suing them to death over it

From what I see online, the ads are cached in a hidden folder (idk where exactly) for when it's not connected to the internet. You can mount it to your pc and just delete the cached ads, and then if the kindle itself is forever in airplane mode outside of KOreader it won't be able to download more. (Once you're in koreader it has its own airplane mode / wifi settings separate from the e-reader's base software, or at least it does on my kobo.) People also do this even on non jailbroken ones by factory resetting and then leaving it in airplane mode forever, although that would be annoying if you were already using it for kindle stuff beforehand.

OK so I got a B&W Clara on Wednesday and it perfectly fits in my coat pocket.

I can just toss a PDF file onto it and it reads it, I connected it to my library card and I can take out library books, the screen looks great, and my GF got me a nice case for it that was only 9 bucks. I'm pretty pleased with it!

drat. I could have sworn you were wrong because I jailbroke my Fire tablet back in the day with Fire Toolbox and it definitely removed ads. I just did some quick googling though, and it seems like you're right, and that the Kindles and Fire tablets are on completely different OS's and you can't use the Toolbox on them. That definitely sucks, but I've heard of people reaching out to Amazon and going "it showed me a SALACIOUS ad! I'm offended!" they'll remove the ads free of charge, but YMMV.

If your running koreader on your jailbroken kindle it displays the book cover on the lockscreen.

Koreader also has a built in ssh server which is handy for transferring books wirelessly.

This totally works btw. Just say you saw a romance ad or something that you considered offensive, and that you don't want the kids around you to see that kind of thing so remove the ads asap.

Just be nice about it. Most of the time they don't give a poo poo and will just do it, and if someone tries to push the fee for removing ads, just talk to someone else.

We did this with my partner's Kindle we got off Woot, and whatever person we talked to asked minimal questions and just took the ads off.

edit: apparently they've recently started cracking down on it more?

It's a capacitive touchscreen so anything electrically conductive can count as a tap. That's also the way it detects your actual fingers, so this isn't a sign of the water getting inside and doing something "wrong".
Having an ereader with physical buttons that lets you temporarily turn off touch input sure helps though.

disable your touchscreen and use a gyro gesture mouse to become an epub sorcerer

Some of the Wacom-compatible models will allow you to toggle finger recognition, giving an optional mode only recognizing the stylus. Not sure how many of those have a strong IP rating, though.

Waterproof means it won’t die if it falls in a bathtub. It does not mean “usable while exposed in an active rainstorm”.

been a while since i used mine, but the Oasis has an option to turn off the touchscreen and exclusively use the page turn buttons for occasions like that iirc

Man, I can't read and walk at the same time. I lost my balance or wander in the wrong direction. If I read, I'm 100% focused on the read. You are lucky you can multi task.

Does anyone have a good method of denoting which books are read in a Calibre / Koreader setup? Basically if anything is rated in Calibre it's been read by me and I've looked around and it seems like this is a common thing to want and everyone has some weird custom way to do it... so anyone want to share their weird custom way?

Or maybe I should just not care and only keep unread books on the Kobo (but I'm a hoarder and that's painful).

in koreader you can just long press on the book in the file browser and mark it as finished

I think there's a kobo plug-in for calibre that will migrate percent read called kobo utilities. I have a custom field that just displays unread, reading, or finished based on that percentage.
