If you pan to the north there's a larger, labeled crater, which links to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedan_%28nuclear_test%29

This thread is awesome so I'll help keep it alive: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.620126,-96.573697&spn=0.003844,0.008669&t=h&z=17 Random nursery/grove on the edge of a state recreation area in Lincoln, NE. Looks like somebody planted some "1XXX" - if that's a 1 and a 9, maybe a year?

Anyone know what this (and similar areas) south of Miami are meant to do? http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=25.391179,-80.303535&spn=0.140812,0.305901&t=h&z=12

Skyworks posted:No. Seriously, if you are that close, you need to take a look. Just stay the gently caress back from the fences. I figure the people there have a distinct lack of sarcasm. Maybe I'm being thick this morning but I seriously have no idea. And "that close" means a 6.5 hour drive.

Skyworks posted:Or, you know, it could be a minutman site... Looks like a heavy duty concrete door that flicks back on rails to me. The 'ranch' to the SE seems like a command site as well. Might be completely wrong. Dude, pretty certain that's a house with an attached garage. The gray thing is one of those half-cylinder-shaped storage structures that are commonplace in Nebraska and other agricultural areas. I doubt it's related to the missile site in any way (and as Arturo Ui's link states, there's a lot of those out there).

mds2 posted:Good find, but there are a lot of those around the state too. The "ranch" is definitely just a family farm though. There is a missile silo not far from my parents house in the middle of a junk yard. They opened it up about 20 years ago and now they throw old tires in it. See, now you have to post that in this thread.

Here's one for y'all — not so much a "what" as a "why" New York/Quebec border There are a handful of spots like this where a road across the border was cut off (Google seems to have dispatched their Street View forces to them on the Canadian side). Anyone know when they were cut off? Pre- or post-9/11? Oh, of course. More than anything it has to be a pain in the rear end for the folks who live along the border who may have preferred going to, say, a grocery store in the other country.

Not really a "strange" thing on Google Maps, but if you like history... To get to Omaha's airport from downtown, you have to go through Iowa — even though the airport is in Nebraska. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter_Lake,_Iowa
