Is there such a thing as the current "best cheapest" monitor? I'm looking at the "Dell U2412M 60Hz 24.0" Monitor" (sorry copied and pasted on my phone) which is $245 and I'm wondering if I can cut any corners and get a cheaper good monitor. Prefer to stay at 24", but 22" is the smallest I'll go. It's just gonna be used to play non twitchy games (read: not shooters) so I don't need to have perfect pixel accuracy/lag or whatever.

Look at the dell s series of whatever size you want, they aren't 16:10 but they have very good ah-va panels and run like $50 cheaper or more. Or the asus p-whatever ips monitors are a little cheaper than the ultrasharps, if I remember right.

Thanks.

Looking up the Dell S series on pcpartpicker gives me these two options. I'm not really sure what the difference between the ST and S designations are. I also found this 24" IPS from AOC in the same price range ($80 cheaper than the original Dell). But I've never heard of AOC before and there are hardly any reviews. Does anyone have some words about AOC monitors?

The P variant ASUS you mentioned is only like $10 cheaper.

I just want to make sure I get this right: I have a monitor with a DisplayPort port, and a laptop with a Thunderbolt port. I have an existing DP cable. I should be able to just buy a Mini DP to DP adaptor for the cable and everything should work right?

Could be placebo but man connecting my laptop to this monitor (HP E242) with DP vs VGA makes a world of a difference. Now I just need to download a color profile for it but I can't find one and I don't have a color calibrator.

Also did I get fleeced into paying a few bucks more for my cable? I didn't buy an adaptor afterall cause a straight up DP to mini DP cable was cheaper. There were two choices, a DP 1.2 and a cheaper 1.1 cable at the same 6 ft length and it looked like 1.1 wouldn't support 1920x1200 according to Wikipedia but now I'm reading that this is just marketing and it's just the female ends that matter. I mean it was like two cheeseburgers more or so but eh.

Came in here to get a recommended monitor and what the hell people overclock monitors and such? I had no idea. I just want a decent 24", preferably 1200p. There's that Dell U2415 that's about $300 or less, is there any reason not to get this one or is there a better one cheaper?

Ok my U2415 came in and I followed the calibration settings here by setting the brightness and contrast and rgb to what they calibrated their icc profile to and also activating said icc profile. In the display menu though there's a setting for "Gamma" with options "Mac" or "PC", what do I set this to? I thought the gamma was set by software/the icc profile. I mean I plan on using this monitor mainly with a PC but I also have a MacBook that I might want to plug into the monitor every now and then when it's convenient.

Is there a way to disable the led light on a U2415? I've found the menu setting to turn the diode off when the monitor is on but it turns itself back on when I turn my computer off and it's quite annoying.

e: also why does my computer keep setting the refresh rate to 59Hz? I mean I know it's not a huge difference but the fact that it won't save my settings and reset back to 59 is super annoying.

So at my office there's an extra 24" 1920x1200 monitor laying around unused and I'd like to take it for a second monitor. That monitor in question has "D-Sub, DVI-D, DisplayPort" inputs. My work computer has a MiniDP (in use), VGA (lol), and well some USB 3.0 ports. My current monitor is using up the MiniDP port, but it also has a HDMI port as well that I'm not using but could. It does not have a video pass-through thing like my U2415 does at home so I can't daisy chain.

Am I understanding right that it's possible to do USB 3.0 --> HDMI/DisplayPort through something called DisplayLink? Is that going to be my best option to hooking up these two monitors to my computer (without using VGA)? These adapters look kind of pricey.

e: vvv the problem is my computer essentially only has 1 video output (MiniDP) and I'm trying to figure out the best/cheapest way to connect that to two monitors vvv

I have enabled Cleartype and adjusted it multiple times. Right now I'm looking at a code in Notepad++ with Consolas and I think it looks great, but on my left I'm looking at Firefox and it looks awful. I know Consolas was designed for sub pixel font rendering or whatever so maybe that has something to do with it but does Firefox have some kind of lovely font smoothing enabled or something?

Picked up a second Dell U2415 today. Does it make any difference whatsoever if I decide to hook it up directly to the GPU or by daisy chaining the second monitor to the first one? I know I'm probably just splitting hairs here but if it's even a tiny bit better to do one or the other then I don't see why not.

e: I have a GTX 970 if it matters.

Not sure about my cable lengths. I'd say 2 m at the most. Monitors are 1920x1200. Might be 1940, whichever one is the standard I don't remember it off the top of my head.

I would think it would be identical image-wise since the signal is digital, it might make a difference as far as what happens if you turn off the monitor that is directly connected to the computer, other than that I can't think of anything but on the other hand I have not tried daisy chaining with my U2415 myself so I don't know if it makes any difference in practice.

Sounds like I'll want to just connect both monitors directly to the GPU then just to avoid any weirdness that might happen. Now that I think about it the best case scenario is that the DP out port is a complete passthrough so it doesn't do any type of processing to get the signal through to the second monitor. Worse case is that it does do that processing and adds fractions of ms of lag. Even in the base case scenario though I'd be effectively using a longer cable to connect the second monitor.

If you think you'll notice the signal timing difference from an extra foot or two of cable, you are wrong.

Unsure if the U2415 introduces any latency of its own, but you can always give it a shot and find out. Most people reporting problems with daisy chaining make no mention of performance issues, though, and usually grip about other problems: issues with monitors waking/sleeping, for example.

I'm not saying I'll notice any differences. But if there are differences and the fact that I could just avoid them altogether then why not. It's not like I'm talking about shelling out $2000 for gold plated cables or something. It's just about whether I connect the monitor via A or B both of which I already have.

In case anyone was wondering I finally managed to hook up my second Dell U2415 and had to go the daisy chaining route since the DP cable was too short to reach my PC on the floor. If I turn off the first monitor (the one actually connected to my PC) then the second one shuts off and enters power saving mode as expected. If I turn off the second monitor with the first one still on then the screen blanks out and comes back; I think Windows panics a bit and tries to figure out whats happened to the second monitor. Not in an error-y way though. I just let my Windows power settings handle my monitors turning off though so I've never actually seen one monitor turn off, only both at the same time. Strange thing though is that when I move my mouse the second monitor always turns on first, even though the mouse is connected to the USB hub on the first monitor.

Now I gotta figure out what's the best way to arrange them is. Should I have one primary monitor in front of me and the other one offset, or should they both be in front of me offset to each side? This is the first time I've had multiple monitors really.

I'm really happy with the stock stand on my Dells. It looks pleasingly nice and I can raise it pretty drat high. The one at my work (HP E242) is quite similar too, though it doesn't go as high.

The thing is I'm a bit of a sperg when it comes to needing my bezels and monitor heights to line up exactly and you wouldn't believe the amount of time I've wasted at work adjusting and readjusting and repositioning my single monitor so that it was directly in front of me...

Hey guys I want a hardware switch box that I can plug my monitor (DP or HDMI) and its USB cable into on one side, and the otherside plug it into both my desktop and laptop. I just want to turn a physical knob on the box to redirect the USB/DP connectivity to either the desktop or laptop.

Is there such a thing?

Well the laptop is a MBP that pretty much never leaves the desk now because iPhone. And I have two monitors now connected to my desktop. My idea was that I'd connect the second monitor to this box, and connect the box to the desktop and laptop. That way I could primarily use both monitors for the desktop but turn a switch and use the second monitor with the laptop without futzing around behind the screen with cables.

Though now that I think more about it I'd need to figure out a different plan for the USB situation. But even just a DisplayPort rerouter box or whatever would be a nice start.

For those of you that have a dual monitor setup, how do you have your monitors oriented? Tertiary monitor on the left or right? Assuming you have your main monitor in the middle.

I just asked about this too and people told me to just play around with it until I get something that feels right.

I tried the primary monitor in front and secondary to its left (my right) but didn't like it because my head strained too much when I used the secondary monitor for more than a glorified Spotify/iTunes screen which is a total waste. Right now I'm trying a V shaped setup so the screens are equally in front of me with the divide between them right in front. It's working ok so far, but I'm noticing that maybe it's because of how I'm sitting or whatever but it feels more natural to use the secondary monitor to my right as the main one. Having to keep my head ever so turned to the left to view the primary monitor right now still strains my head a tad bit.

I think if I had a deeper desk that I can put my monitors back further this wouldn't be as much of an issue/at all.

Just my two cents.

Do these ultrawide monitors have some kind of input mode where it can trick the GPU into thinking the monitor contains 2x monitors at the hardware level? Just wondering cause from my experience a lot of games will just take up the entire monitor no matter what resolution setting you put in. Having a 32:9 ultrawide or whatever seems nice for the lack of bezels and such but not if my game only supports 16:9 and blackbars the rest of the screen. Something like that Dell 4k monitor that was posted that can trick the computer into thinking it's 4 separate monitors for example for when the game doesn't want to play nice.

I have two Dell 2415s that were previously hooked up via daisychained DP cables. My GPU isn't working anymore so I'm stuck using the iGPU but unfortunately my motherboard only has one HDMI port. Is it not possible to daisychain HDMI to the first monitor and DP from that monitor to the next? I can't get it to work (the monitor says no signal is detected) and Google isn't helping because the only results I get are about HDMI to DP dongles.
