Echo Bazaar is a web-based RPG created by Failbetter Games. Currently in Beta, the game is set in Victorian London, by way of Lovecraft and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The city has "fallen" underground and become incorporated as the Fifth City ruled by the Masters of the Bazaar, a hooded, mysterious group of figures. Devils, golem and squid-men roam the streets. The games uses Twitter and Facebook for logging in, and rewards tweeting about the game with extra actions. The Basics The games focuses on 4 main traits - Dangerous, Persuasive, Watchful, and Shadowy, and they're used to play the storylets present within the world. It's here the game excels - it's genuinely well-written and engaging, filled with intrigue surrounding the various mysteries within the game. You have a large amount of freedom for developing traits, as there's no true classes within the game, just a few hooks that will encourage you to develop certain ones over others. Want to play a foppish detective who seduces everyone he comes across? Time to boost Persuasive at Veilgarden. Want to play a school-of-hard-knocks spy-woman? Start off beating up folks on Watchmaker's Hill. Levelling up Levelling up is done by participating in "storylets" which are accessed in each location - each trait has one or two locations dedicated to it, which you either start off with access to or have to buy/earn access to. Storylets within locations tend to be simple events, such as following a person without being seen, which typically test a certain trait, in this case Shadowy. More complex storylets are accessed via cards - these can activate continuing storylines, such as seducing devils or helping out spies. By succeeding these storylets, you'll gain experience point, as well as items and in some cases, connections to the various factions within the game. Failing will gain some points, so it can be worthwhile doing impossible tasks on a whim early on. Items within the game are used to open up more locations, perform special storylets, or can be sold in the Bazaar to buy stat-boosting items and other goods. But Echo Bazaar isn't just concerned with small stuff which can be done within a few turns. As time goes on, you can dedicate yourself to one of four ambitions, which tend to focus on two of your four traits. These are life-changing events which will span the entire length of the game as you level up, in some cases opening up unique areas of the game. So how do I play with Gooooooons??? Player interaction is pretty limited, and tends to focused on working off negative qualities such as Nightmares, Scandal, or Suspicion, or getting items which act as second chances for storylets. In order to do these things you need to be following the person on Twitter or Facebook - so if you want some help within the game, make sure to post your accounts! Added you guys. Just starting, but my Nightmares are already getting out of control, even with a cheerful goldfish equipped. I just can't afford to keep selling items for Laudanum at this point. Any bad things that stack up (Wounds, Suspicion & Nightmares off the top of my head) aren't really that bad. Especially early on you're better off ignoring them & dealing with them when the game forces you to as opposed to spending what little money you can scrounge together to only delay that inevitable conclusion.

I've been playing this since around the end of October. I thought about making a thread, but figured from observation that the mere mention of Twitter would drive people into a frothing rage. Speaking from some of that experience, don't worry about Menaces like Nightmares, or Scandal, or what have you when you first start out. If they get too high, you just get confined to a special region until you've worked the problem down some. By the time they become a real problem (when a failed test has the chance of raising an associated Menace) you'll have a fucknormous nest-egg of crap to sell, and will be making enough off your successes to keep madness or transport at bay.

One thing I would advise new players is that if you're given any free Fate, hold on to it. Don't spend it on candles or whatnot. You'll want it to open up extra plots later on. You only get free Fate early on or if the site has troubles, you won't keep getting it.

I can't believe how everything seems to be connected and completely thought out. I was reading on another forum that some speculate that the dream cards are matched up with the fate of the previous stolen cities. If true, that is so cool. The idea of all these mysteries relating to the fifth city that one can get a reward for figuring out is very appealing. Typically if I'm stumped in a game I can just gamefaqs it or whatever. The lack of easy answers is great. It's been said before but the writing is just so goddamn entertaining.

Was wondering if there would be a Something Awful thread for this! Looks like I get in on the ground floor. My #ebz twitter account is CrashLaunching. Feel free to add me. As many people have said, the writing and world are the real draws here, and I'm impressed by the blog posts where failbetter has made clear that they have plans and actual answers for all the mysteries they hint at. But even the stat/echo grind is kind of addictive, as it lets you progress in the world. Mechanics talk (could be considered spoilsport type stuff) The other browser-based game I've played a lot of, Kingdom of Loathing, has tons of people spading out the mechanics and an utterly comprehensive wiki. Echo Bazaar has several wikis, all of which are woefully incomplete - and furthermore, all flawed in design in various ways, so I can't even tell which I should be contributing to, if I want to contribute. http://echobazaar.wikidot.com/ is the first that shows up on google, and seems like it has a lot of info, so I figure it might end up being the main one, but the interface just seems flawed. And all these wikis are content-wikis. None seem to be investigating the mechanics. Has anyone seen any mechanics investigation? Because I'm interested, I figured I'd start trying to figure some of the mechanics out, beginning with stat advancement. I just started tracking, but anyone else is welcome to start doing so, too, so we can combine data. Here's what I've found so far, since beginning tracking yesterday. Straightforward: Success is guaranteed, 1 change point. Low Risk: Appears to be 1 change point on success, 1 pt on fail. Not enough data for chances. But risk does appear low. Hypothesis based on memory - either 90% or 95% chance of success, leaning toward 90. Modest: So far, 29 successes, 12 failures. Appears to be 2pts on both success and failure. Hypothesis: either a 75% or 66% chance of success. Chancy: So far, 33 successes, 31 failures. 3 pts on success, 2 on failure (though I thought I got 3 on failure once, I must have been wrong). Hypothesis 50% chance of success. High risk: So far 5 successes, 18 failures. 4 pts on success, 3 on failure. Hypothesis either a 25% or 33.3% chance of success. Almost impossible: so far 0 successes, 3 failures, though I know I've had successes before. 5 change points on success, 3 on failure. Hypothesis: Either a 5% or 10% chance of success, leaning toward 10. I don't know if there are divisions in percentage chance between levels, when you gain a level in the ability but the riskiness doesn't change -- are you slightly more likely to succeed, then? What other mechanics questions could we be figuring out? Stuff like running battle/casing/etc change points required as level rises? How often you get a rare success on a storylet or opportunity? etc. I think I'll focus on stats for now, but I'm also curious about the running battle stuff because I want to figure out if it's "worth it" in terms of loot, for the number of turns you put in.

I can't seem to find out how the "Venture" things you have to build up are useful. Like "Investigating..." or "Running Battle..." I've stopped doing them because in the 8-10 actions it could take for me to get the CHANCE to finish it, I could be succeeding on smaller challenges and making a ton of Echoes, or failing harder ones and getting much more skill. Sure you'll stumble across the occasional Opportunity card that will give you a bonus to your progress attribute, but they're usually so costly that you're reward is marginalized by what you paid into the Opportunity . Has anyone (particularly those of you more established) found any particularly worthwhile Ventures, or are they usually not worth the time investment?

Brock Samsonite posted:Has anyone (particularly those of you more established) found any particularly worthwhile Ventures, or are they usually not worth the time investment? At higher levels there are some very fun ones. Shadowy around a modified 80 lets you build up a Venture which lets you rob places for huge piles of items. Also, robbing the Bazaar had some of the most awesome text I've seen so far.

The Ventures are mainly small plots, I think. At least some of them unlock Opportunities later on, but if you're more interested in the grind then you're probably just as well to skip them. My only brush with Mr. Sacks so far has been an Opportunity with a few of the urchins that work for him. There were several options, I think all but one of which cost Fate, and involved gift-giving and eavesdropping. Like the Rubbery Man who dropped by my garret around Hallowe'en, I suspect he and his urchins are just a rare seasonal Opportunity with an odd little flair. Edit: No, I misremembered. There's a new event attached to Your Lodgings that involves Mr. Sacks-- who isn't making the rounds yet. Currently there's a Persuasive challenge (straightforward at 50+), a Shadowy one (still almost impossible at 36) and a 'send a little thing to a friend' option for 5 Fate. Invite a smarter friend to a game of chess = Sudden Insights. Sudden Insights + high Nightmare score allows you to invite a friend over to unburden yourself and discuss your nightmares and fears. This game is fantastic. I can't believe I didn't know about this before I saw the thread here. I'm loving the writing and the atmosphere. Very Lovecraftian as other people have mentioned, but it also reminds me of China Meiville (Perdido Street Station specifically) a little in that there's a living world there and you're just scratching the surface picking up the terminology as you go. I'm also starting to see some very...interesting things now that my nightmares have hit 7. Probably my own fault for making my standard response to mysterious and probably evil things "hey what's that and what can I learn from it?". Is there any point in trying to up all four stats to begin with? Should I just be focusing on one? On the the two for my ambition? I guess I just wonder what I'm missing out on with my low dangerous/shadowy qualities.

Alright, I have 400 cryptic clues and I followed you on twitter. Once you follow me back I can start the heist.

Anyone have a good place to get Greyfields 1882s? I need like 200 of them for my Ambition and they seem pretty rare to find.
