For those of you looking for a lot of great discussion of classical music, this is probably the best online forum for the genre (that I know of):

http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php

I started reading it in 2004 and it's always been a pretty active forum (and it's off-topic forum is pretty great.) Lots of eloquent discussion in that place and members are often intimidatingly knowledgeable and fanatic about classical music.

Hello classical thread - it's been too long! I wanted to thank you for bringing this excellent resource to my attention. In return watch this great candid session with Vladimir Horowitz. He acts like a goofball between pieces while talking about hanging out with Rachmaninoff. I always love how Horowitz could play a stunningly beautiful piece and then come right out of it going 'I am like Mozart!' while laughing like a maniac :)

As a super amateur piano player I can't be thankful enough that giants like him could live to be filmed in this way. He's just so candid and human - like any old man proud of how he lived and what he can do and just wanting to show off sometimes.

Boy this was the finest episode of Pipedreams I have heard in a long time:

http://pipedreams.publicradio.org/listings/2012/1238/

Back from the BBC proms. Cameron Carpenter playing some reworked Bach pieces and while I usually enjoy a straight interpretation these are fantastic.

Glenn Gould seriously electrifies me and I find that he captures so much of the spirit of how Bach effects me personally. If you are looking for Gould look no further than my boy mightysmeagol's youtube channel. He has everything in the highest quality. protestant7 and mightysmeagol basically make up all of my youtube watches for the last few years.

So glad you asked!

Even if you aren't a fan of pipe organ playing, the sheer variety and quality of each of these shows will convert you. You can stream or download any previous show back to 89'. Each show will have additional audio segments, occasional interviews with one of the performing artists and a full track listing. To start off with, here's a show from the 2012 BBC Proms with fantastic interpretations of Bach by Cameron Carpenter.

The opening Toccata & Fugue (BWV 540) is such a great example of what the pipe organ has to offer. The immense dynamic range allows for a performance that is at first ethereal and then electrifying. I wouldn't be hearing any of it without great classical shows like these!

So is Cameron Carpenter the glam-organist?

His video is pretentious as heck, but his actual music is pretty great.

Goddamn I am laughing at every aspect of this video. Really, though, I posted a link previously in this thread featuring his interpretation of Bach at the BBC Proms and it was just outstanding. I have never heard an organ played like in that performance.

I challenge anyone to listen to a good performance of Bach's St. John Passion and not feel their hair stand on end. It opens with bars and bars of orchestral buildup that explode into a full chorus, wrapping around itself with expressions of longing and devotion. Seriously amazing stuff. I'm not religious but you can absolutely feel the angst and desire in that piece.
