That was my goal months ago but I kept having crashes with that, too. Played the game for about 10 hours then I couldn't go more than 30 or so minutes without crashes. Eventually just gave up.

You're not using New Vegas Stutter Remover are you? That mod was broken by a windows 10 update and can cause some severe instability. I'd recommend using New Vegas Tick Fix instead

Hm, I didn't know about that. Thanks for the info.

I would like anyone who honestly thinks Bethesda sabotaged New Vegas to take a good look at Bethesda's own games. When FO3 launched Megaton was devoid of NPCs because they would fall through the ground. In Skyrim a patch introduced a bug in dragon animations that caused them to fly backwards. So Doc Mitchel bugging out and his head rotating is par for the course.
Bethesda gave New Vegas the exact same level QA they give their own games. And if anything, New Vegas had less crippling issues then FO3.

And while New Vegas's development time was crazy fast for a game of that size. Ropekid or anyone else from OEI never indicated Bethesda hosed with their schedule.

Obsidian stuck to the schedule they negotiated, and Bethesda did the final QA testing before release. Unless you're counting Bethesda's abysmal internal QA testing as intentional sabotage, they didn't meddle with the game's development and in many cases helped Obsidian better understand the Frankenstein'd game engine.

I know ENB isn't very popular around here because Boris is a massive homophobic dickwad, but to NicholasKing, what sort of crashes have you been getting? If you're still getting the "Out of Memory" crash even with the 4GB patcher installed, I would recommend using ENBOOST. It's the baseline for all ENB presets but without the extra features and performance loss. What it essentially does is drip-feed your system's RAM into the game to keep it from crashing when running high poly texture mods. Without texture packs, it's just an extra bit of insurance to avoid certain crashes.

I don't know how things are nowadays, but back in 2011 at least it was depressingly standard. Warner Bros first started doing it back in the early 2000s and all the other big publishers jumped on the idea.
New Vegas is the one time people took notice of it and went WTF.

You did a super job wrapping things up! And I'm not just saying that because I have to!

It probably makes more sense to tie a bonus to that than to something like sales; given the popularity of Bethesda games decent sales were pretty much a given, while metacritic is an indicator of how well the game was received

Apart from that everything seems really stable, too. It's weird and I dunno if I should abandon this playthrough (just started and only played like a half hour) and start over with a new mod setup or not. I ca only hope it's just one building that leads to this crash 'cuz I have no idea what I could have installed that did this.

It could be caused by something being merged improperly. I was having issues with Freeside causing crashes upon entry and I ended up having to rearrange my load order and rebuild my merge patch.

It's Obsidian, and it's worth noting that this is unconfirmed, we only have Chris Avellone's word for it. We don't know what kind of negotiations happened and whether there were any strings attached to the 24 months timeline, for example.

Chris Avellone definitely had a really bad fallout with the rest of the co-founder and owners of Obsidian, and while I do believe he's genuine, he also portrays every information in the worst possible light and has reacted rather badly in the past when other Obsidian employees and former employees have contradicted him. He recently, for example, argued that Obsidian should have put their Knights of the Old Republic II royalties on the negotiating table to get a delay on Knights of the Old Republic II, which 1) well, we don't know if that would have worked 2) I imagine when you're living on a project to project basis, having royalties from a successful sequel could be pretty helpful in keeping the studios afloat, so I can see the other side of it? Admittedly, it's easier to be forgiving now that KOTOR 2 has been out for years.

Either way, describing New Vegas as "rushed" is both correct and incorrect, the timeline was known from the beginning (Bethesda announced the game actually pretty early and pretty much set the timeframe there, so there wasn't really any doubt about it) but Obsidian didn't know the technology and overscoped at the start, which made for a really buggy game with pretty significant problems at release.

I don't really remember any other real differences in the gameplay, engine especially if you use gameplay mods like Wanderer's Edition.

Because when you get bored with the Capital Wasteland, you can go "bugger this for a game of soldiers" and go west to have cowboy casino adventures without having to build a new character.

Just wanna say that I followed the Viva New Vegas Core guide and everything seems really good right now. Of course I was just doing a bunch of obvious things obviously wrong but now everything is great. At least I'm finally making some real progress and with only one weird glitch. A motel room in Novac was just...bizarre. Not even sure how to describe it. But I could turn around and leave and nothing happened and no other problems at all that I've noticed yet. Certainly no crashes which was my main concern.

Well the Companion bar and avatar isn't showing up in JIP Companion but I dunno what might have caused that. Maybe it's only Veronica? I'll have to find another companion to try it out. It might have been installing Ling's Vegas to make the faces prettier and get more hair but I dunno. It hardly concerns me.

EDIT:

Scratch that, her avatar just moved to the top of the screen instead of the left. I have no idea why. Whatever.

I like your style hombre, but this is no laughing matter. Assault on a police officer. Theft of police property. Illegal possession of a firearm. FIVE counts of attempted murder. That comes to... 29 dollars and 40 cents. Cash, cheque, or credit card?

What mods are there to improve the hardcore/survivalist/scavenger aspects of gameplay? I really like the idea of hardcore mode, and of using just whatever I can find, but when I last played that way it felt like the Mojave was incredibly bountiful and I didn't really struggle the way I should've.

I'm not great at self-imposed difficulty challenges, which is why I want a mod. Maybe something that makes food more scarce? Just increasing the rate at which hunger goes up seems like the wrong solution.

Additionally, are there any good mods focused on the weapon/ammo crafting side of things, with a similar hardscrabble "everything I have is half-broken and I use whatever I pick up" feeling?

The jsawyer mod is probably your best bet. It makes food and purified water rarer, makes stimpaks and doctor's kits a bit weaker, makes stuff you craft at the campfire a bit stronger/more useful, and speeds up the rate of starvation/dehydration so that you actually have to worry sometimes about finding a clean water source.

I should've mentioned I was using JSawyer Ultimate last time, when I had my impression of the easy bounty of the Mojave, and will be using it again. Unfound Loot looks great, and is exactly something I was thinking of: "Can I just get less stuff?"

Any tips on a good experience reducer / leveling cost increaser? I plan on doing a majority of the New Vegas content and occasionally hopping over to the Capital Wasteland to hunt orcs, and I'm not sure by how much to reduce my XP so that I don't swiftly become a murdergod.

Question: are there are any good, balance mods that add more perks? I know that a part of Cirosan's Classic Overhaul added them, but the mod's been abandoned for years now, and More Perks always gave the impression of being pretty haphazardly put together, to be honest.

Jsawyer ultimate has an option to decrease xp. Or you could always use the Logan's Run trait, which'll hard cap you at 21.

Does anybody have the faintest clue why items would be flying around in some rooms? I mentioned this earlier with the one Novac motel room and it happened against at Ringo's gas station in Goodsprings. Both times I could just turn and leave though.

My real concern is the NCR Correctional Facility Administration building. There, when I enter, the screen just goes black and it's like everything to really, really slow, like my PC suddenly can't play it and the FPS went to hell. After a while the game just crashes, especially if I try to pause the game.

This is a totally optional quest of course and I can turn and walk away. But it is concerning given how far I've come in this playthrough and I don't want this to crop up in a story quest and I'm just hosed.

Yeah, if iPresentInterval in your ini file is set to 0 that removes VSync and causes the physics engine to go haywire as it rockets above 60fps. Either force VSync through a gpu control panel or use an FPS limiter.
