I don't think they should have no access to entertainment, they just shouldn't be allowed to comment on it. Free YouTube Kids and Netflix Kids and Disney+ (with the MA stuff disabled) for all of them.

Does anyone have preferred mods that make healing items and food more scarce? I've got so many auto-inject stimpaks that I could stroll through the Courier's Mile with my eyes closed. I don't need every trip back to Novac to be an ordeal where I'm about to starve to death, but I'd appreciate not being able to just have 50 purified waters available at all times so I can slam two or three of them whenever I hit a thirst threshold

Would probably be easier to reduce your carry weight and make sure your stimpacks have weight

The real world will, again tomorrow, function and run without me.

the great thing about vnv is that you can just ignore the mods that add or change stuff you don't want added or changed. it's held up as The Definitive Way To Play New Vegas but at the end of the day it's just the mods some guy on the internet likes. what makes it special is how everything is really well categorized and has a good description so you can easily chose what parts to follow and what parts to ignore, while also walking you through some of the more annoying parts of modding

JSawyer makes healing items and water more scarce, and replaces a lot of stimpaks with "expired stimpaks" that have less healing power. Hunting animals is still an easy way to get food, but I guess for a real challenge you could roleplay as a vegan.

Or you can do low survival stat. Survival below 20 means you can't cook any of the meat you find except Bloatfly, so you're more reliant on scavenged or purchased food.

Interesting, the most recent install I did has the health, carry weight, and armor DR / weight balances from it at least

The VNV author put in their own fork, Vigor, but that now seems to have been replaced with yet another fork of a fork that claims to merge the other forks: Lone Star - Another JSawyer (FNV-TTW)

Some bright spark some day is going to get a PhD from studying the patterns of jsawyer forks and telling us what they find about human nature in it.

quote:

OVERVIEW
The purpose of the Lone Star is to find a happy medium between the other JSawyer forks.
Unlike Vigor this fork is not trying to find balance between the original mod and the vanilla game (although Lone Star has all its functions, which can be configured), but at the same time, it's not trying to expand the content of the original mod like JSawyer Ultimate Edition.
I was looking at what SawyerBatty FNV was trying to achieve (but it has not been updated since its release in 2022 and, accordingly, is currently outdated due to changes in new versions of YUP) - provide a fixed, compatible, and slightly improved version of the JSawyer. To give you mostly the intended experience of the original mod.

JSAWYER
Mod, created by Joshua Sawyer, to provide a harder, more challenging experience to the game. You can read the full changelog here.
Highlights:

Less Health.
Less Carry Weight.
Less max level.
Less HP for healing.
Less loot.
More XP needed to level up.
Armor overhaul.
Perks overhaul.
New Stimpak variants.

CHANGES FROM THE ORIGINAL MOD

Forwarded all YUP and UPNVSE+ bug fixes.
Converted to ESM (the BSA archive of the mod contains generated facegen).
Used the SetPCCanUsePowerArmor function instead of removing "Power Armor" flags to fix the idle stance and "IsPowerArmor" script issues.
Applied the base health change through fAVDHealthEnduranceOffset instead of editing player records, so it actually works now.
Repositioned Lightweight Metal Armor, which was previously stuck in the texture.
Removed JSawyerLoadMessage (message box from the beginning of the game, seriously?).
Removed the Ghost People Flesh record edit because the player couldn't obtain it.
Removed "Has Backpack" flags from combat armors to fix the idle stance.
Removed all remaining (GRA) tags.
Rewrote the (Junk) prefix to ", Junk" for constistency.
Rewrote "Reinforced Merc Outfit" to "Merc Outfit, Reinforced" for constistency.
Replaced LL2Tier2EnergyGun with LootBrightFollowersEnergy in one of the Deranged Bright Followers to prevent him from carrying an Incetrator.
Fixed wrong carry weight of the Scorched Sierra Power Armor with perk.
Increased weight of the Auto-Inject Stimpak and Auto-Inject Super Stimpak to the value of their non-auto counterparts.
Moved all FormID changes from a script to hard edits for easier patching.
Moved NPC karma changes to a script for compatibility with mods that edit NPCs.
Edited various in-game tutorials and load-screen messages to be consistent with the mod's changes.
Added the "Restore Dehydration" effect to Rum & Nuka, which was probably removed by accident.
Added item health to all of the placed Courier's Stash items.
Added Homemade and Expired Stimpaks to the NVDLC03PerkRelatedAllStimpaksLIST.
Added overlooked Expired Stimpaks in the appropriate containers and leveled lists.
Changed NVDLC03ChemistrySetSCRIPT to give Homemade Stimpaks.

TALE OF TWO WASTELANDS CHANGES

Forwarded all TTW changes and fixes.
Removed all unique armors (they were used by changing F3 leftovers in NV).
Adjusted F3 armor weight and effects to keep up with the JSawyer changes.
Added Expired and Homemade Stimpaks to F3 leveled lists.

Are you playing TTW with VNV? If not, that's a bug in Lone Star which says "Removed all unique armors (they were used by changing F3 leftovers in NV)" is a change that should only affect TTW.

No, but I ended up dropping vnv entirely

Wanted to get it down to only using jsawyer so I can use steam cloud saves and switch between computers and come back to it later without having to faff about too much

You know about portable instances in MO2 right? With a little setup you could sync an entire load order.

The funny thing is I remember ropekid saying on here that it’s not accidental. Both coke and rum are dehydrating irl why would it work in game.

dyslexic Bowie clone
Just installed the latest version of VNV on this new computer, after having a really outdated VNV version that I installed forever ago and just stuck with because it worked. Really impressed by all the slick, new-to-me features like the gray pip indicator on the radar for unlooted bodies and the in-game menu to adjust all the iStewieAI tweaks. Only thing I skipped was the overhauls section in favor of the OG jsawyer mod (not a big fan of the fan offshoots and some of their design choices).

Glad I spent the 2 hours or so to get it all set up for the next time I inevitably get the urge to replay New Vegas

I remember the first time I noticed there's a challenge that grants XP for consuming 25 chems. My character went to the bar at Gomorrah, drank 25 whiskeys, and instantly died.

What? Coke is water with some sugar syrup and carbon dioxide. How could it possibly be dehydrating?

Caffeine will stop your kidneys from pulling water back into circulation and also make you pee more. Artificial sweeteners also do this.

Sugar can itself be dehydrating, so avoiding the artificial stuff solves one problem but causes another.

Raygereio

Coke dehydrating you is a bit of a myth.
Yeah, caffeine is a diuretic. But the water in soda is more then enough to offset that. It wouldn't be my first choice of beverage in a desert, but you're not going to die of thirst.

It's done that way in the game for thematic reasons as much as anything, to drive home how important fresh water is in the setting and how much influence someone has who controls Lake Mead and the Colorado River. I like the way jsawyer does it tho, where non-water drinks hydrate you just a bit- gives me a reason to be chugging beers as I go

Well, he's wrong about coke. Caffeine is dehydrating, but the amount of water in a Coca Cola more than makes up for it. If you only drink coke you will feel hosed up, but that's because you've had way more sugar and caffeine than you should have, you've had enough water.
