EDIT: I think it still is really good for 10 years old. Makes you actually feel like Freeside is chaotic and dangerous.

I am still rolling with Freeside Review in this run but I doubt I'll stick with it for a future one unless it vastly improves.

I've been doing my yearly playthrough of New Vegas, and it made me wonder something. Is there a Viva New Vegas style guide for Fallout 3? There's one for 4 and TTW, and while eventually I'll get around to 4, it's been much longer since I've played 3. I've never messed with TTW, would I just do that?

Finally installed Fallout: New California, after watching one of those "can you beat" videos about it.

Assorted thoughts so far, based on a single mostly-complete playthrough on Path of the Warrior through the NCR questline. I'm late to the party, so I'm sure people have covered some of this ground before:
  • The environment design is good. The mod has the best looking interior spaces I've ever seen in a Fallout game. Vault 18 is the first Vault in either the 3D or 2D games that actually looks like a self sufficient underground city where people could live for hundreds of years.
  • Large areas of the map are strung together without loading screens in between. For example, several businesses in Union City are open to the wasteland, you can just walk in without a map transition. While this lets you do cool things like look out the windows while inside the bar and see the rest of the game world, it inflicts a noticeable performance cost.
  • The performance hit gets worse when the game flings a big scripted battle at you, spitting out an absurd number of NPCs (both allied and enemy) to shoot it out. This has its benefits - the fight on the freeway between the NCR squad and the raider artillery bunker is better than any of the big battles in Fallout NV. But not only does the number of NPCs in play create lag, they also infinitely respawn until you complete an objective. Which is something the mod does in several other places.
  • At the beginning of the game, your companions are full of life and personality, dangling lots of story hooks in front of the player. Kira wants to find the tribe her parents were from. Johnny is a drug addict who's going to die if he doesn't quit buffout and psycho. The first act has a bunch of scripted sequences where the companions interact with each other and otherwise inject themselves into the story. Then... nothing. Once you get out into the wasteland and start exploring, they just follow you around in a conga line and shoot things. Occasionally you can get unique dialogues reacting to something that happened in the game, but there's not even a generic "tell me about yourself" line where you can get more backstory. I asked Kira if she wanted to do NCR quests, and she said "no, I want to kill everyone at Athens Tec Mine and find my parents". So I went to Athens Tec Mine and killed everyone, and didn't find poo poo. Did I miss a quest flag, is this content that hasn't been added to the mod yet, or is it just a hook the developers dropped?
  • All the companions follow you around at once. Which means the conga line of chucklefucks behind you immediately deletes anything less than a full squad of enemies in a hail of bullets, lasers and spears.
  • You may have noticed that I talk about scripting a lot. The mod has a lot of very meticulously built encounters that don't allow the player much wiggle room, other than doing what the authors intended. The whole thing feels like a narrowing funnel, where your choices get more and more restricted as you proceed, until you're undertaking Call of Duty style "RAMIREZ! WIN THE BATTLE" missions with squads of soldiers who are all tagged as essential NPCs.
  • As heavily scripted as the mod is, the scripting is quite fragile. I'll give an example that happened to me: Guy A tells you to kill Guy B. You go talk to Guy B, and he asks you if you're going to kill him. You say "of course not" and then you kill him. But Guy A and Guy B are part of the same faction, and killing Guy B turns Guy A hostile. Because you SAID you weren't killing Guy B, the game locked you out of the quest to kill him, and just went straight to "you pissed off this faction" when you killed him.
  • The new monsters are super cool. Giant mutant javelina, giant mutant tarantulas, snakes (whose hitbox is somehow even narrower than their bodies). Even some new robots that look totally badass.
  • The Raider Alliance is a cool new faction. I haven't tried a playthrough siding with them, but the character designs for all the different gangs are great. The vault vikings wear homemade chainmail, the vultures wear leather jackets and swear at you in Spanish, and the fire worshipers toss incendiary grenades and hack at you with fire axes. I just wish they were mechanically a little more distinct - aside from a few specific troop types they all blend together in an endless mess of guys running at you waving guns and sharp objects.
  • The setting is great, but the main plot is a rehash of Fallout 1 and 2. Without getting too heavily into spoiler territory, the Super Mutants and the Enclave are back, doing almost exactly the same thing as they did in the previous games.
At its best, Fallout New California is equal to the best of New Vegas' DLCs. At its worst, it combines the jank of NV and the linearity of FO3. There's a lot of annoying stuff, but so far nothing truly atrocious that turned me off it. It's worth a look if you have a craving for more New Vegas and can tolerate a little nonsense.

The Living Desert is great but it spawns Tunnelers after you finish The Lonesome Road. I get that they're meant to be making their way into the Mojave but not immediately fuckin after.

Found the script that spawns them, gonna patch it out and see if it breaks anything. Would anyone be interested in said patch?

Figured it was safer than removing them outright, since I have no idea how to deal with the triggers.

I have no idea if anyone actually cares, but it turns out I didn't actually recompile the scripts in that patch, so it did literally nothing. https://eyearesee.warhaggis.com/uploads/047044a62f8afa2b/FuckTunnelers.esp is a fixed version. It'll spew "gently caress Tunnelers" into the console instead of spawning anything. loving without spawning!



I've also addressed a couple of pet peeves because I'm unemployed and bored! https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/71545 Here is a patch for JSUE that correctly changes the Varmint Rifle to 5.56mm and also updates any scripted references to .22LR in place of 5.56mm, in case anyone wants to play with JSUE but also suck up to rope kid as they do so.

The other pet peeve I've addressed is that the companion dismissal terminals don't have an option to send everyone back to the Lucky 38. There was an old busted mod that contained 2000 recompiled scripts; I've cleaned that up and refactored the dismissal script to match how YUP handles it. As I'm writing this I'm realising that it may be possible to perform the dismissal to L38 even if you haven't been there yet! I will probably fix that some day!

Fixed another pet peeve, inspired by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUQEfED6ok4. I dunno if anyone else has ever done it. Basically if you use Follower Formula Redone (recommended in VNV) or any other mod that increases the number of companions, some of them will follow you into Mr House's penthouse.

Glad to be of service.

Still aggressively unemployed, so the above fix has been updated to be based upon YUP and correctly applies the fix to the "Victor" version of the elevator script. I also cleaned it up a bit by moving the follower auto-dismissal timer to its own block, no need to run it 80 times.

New change makes it depend on YUP since the YUP version of the Victor script ensures that Victor gets upgraded to MkII if you've delivered the platinum chip. I dunno why this has to happen in the elevator script but it's an old rear end game with a whack scripting engine :shrug:

Hi. There's this mod called "Classic Fallout Supermutants" and apparently this mod isn't allowed on the Nexus because the author isn't active anymore and doesn't have it on their own profile anymore ergo the mod isn't allowed to be shared any longer.

Well, here's the mod, plus an .esp that translates the names from French to English, because gently caress the Nexus and it's draconian rules. Use only one .esp. "Expanded Coverage" is the French to English translation.
