I was going to start out with mentioning Kimi ni Todoke but was beaten to it, I love both the manga and the anime about equally, maybe giving the manga a very slight edge. Nate RFB pretty much nailed why I love it as well, Sawako's interactions with everyone are really great and the way that she's been growing a lot while still remaining so true to herself is all sorts of well done. (As of me writing this I see that they are at the proofreading stage of chapter 52! can't wait)

I have the official English releases in my Amazon to-buy list too.
edit: hey those look cheaper than amazon, cool!

Lovely Complex is another favorite of mine. Also has a great cast of characters to work with (Nobu is the best best-friend ever). A whole lot more comedy than KnT and is also finished. I like the manga and anime pretty equally for this one as well, the animation sometimes isn't all that hot, but it has some hilarious visual gags. We had a thread for it but it's drifted into archives.

Now that I think about it the first romance/shoujo type thing I watched was Sasameki Koto. Which is technically yuri (or shoujo-ai) I guess, although I hadn't even heard that term when I watched the anime. There was a thread here for it, got hooked on it, found the manga and then got hooked on that. Like I said it's about two girls, but the tropes are pretty much the same, there's a whole lot of missteps and misunderstandings and angst and all that stuff that I both love and hate about shoujo. Not nearly as good as KnT or LoveCom I still am caught up in it, even though it has some pacing issues (stupid karate tournament!). Maybe someday those girls will stop mooning around and move forward.
You can read it here and here it's listed in two places over there, but whatever, it's easy to sort it out.

I haven't had time to start it yet but sooner or later I'm going to read trough Kare Kano since I've heard pretty good things about it.

Recently I read through Aoi Hana it's got a pretty decent mix of characters too, not nearly as funny as any of the ones I mentioned earlier though, but overall it's "sweet" for lack of a better word. Huh, it is also shōjo-ai...I'm honestly not sure how that happened, I was just looking for another romance. Meh, it's definitely a romance, I guess I don't really give a crap what the genders are of the lovebirds.

As someone who got into anime with Nausicaa way back when I saw it as the butchered edit Warriors of the Wind and also Robotech then later a lot of the "big" titles that made it over here (Akira, GitS, Evagelion) I'm a little confused as to how exactly I got hooked on love stories, espicially these types of love stories where there are so drat many missteps and confusion, and pining and sparkles and bubbles and god drat it just tell her that you like her already! aaaaargh.

Whatever! I'll read the drat things until I get sick of them.

Also, great now I have new things to look at just based on the first post alone.
:arghfist::shobon:

Edited to change yuri to shoujo-ai since neither of those are even close to being pornographic, they just happen to have girls as the two romantic leads.

I was looking for a gif from Lovely Complex of the greatest Valentine's Day chocolate giving scene in history when I ran across this little video in which some madmangenius put together a bunch of funny and or cute scenes from LoveCom with some lovely Barry Manilow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzwG60dwHN4
If there was an emoticon that combined :3: and :xd: I would use it.
It does contain spoilers so if you haven't seen it (and you should see it!) you might not want to watch.

Then again, it is a romantic comedy, nothing it shows should really come as much of a shock.
It also does contain the chocolate giving scene I mentioned earlier.

On the whole, even with the animation being kinda cheap sometimes I think I like the anime more than the manga. The visual gags are hilarious and the whole cast having the Kansai accent just make it awesome.

A clip from a beach episode showing some of the humor and how awesome Risa and Otoni's friends are:

Thanks for making this thread! Hopefully I'll find some more series to watch or read, so far there's a lot of stuff I know I wouldn't have otherwise even heard of.

PS. Risa makes the best faces.

Maybe it's just me, but I swear the art is slipping a bit lately in Kimi ni Todoke. Early on there was just the occasional time where the fingers looked abnormally long but for the last several chapters sometimes the way she draws facial features gets pretty wonky. :( I mean just look at Ayane and Chiziru in the top panel here. <---That's from the brand new chapter 51, so don't click if you're opposed to seeing anything you haven't read yet! Nothing going on there that would spoil anything though.

Storyline is still going along strong though, so I'm not going to complain about it too awful much.

To contribute and since nobody mentioned it yet, here's a series that I liked:
http://adtrwiki.com/index.php?title=Toradora!

Toradora was weird for me, overall I liked it but at various points I almost couldn't stand it. Some of the poo poo was so goddamn dumb, but then there was that kiss, which was all sorts of sweet. I liked the fact that the parents were kind of gently caress ups too, Ryuji's mom in particular. She's single, works in a hostess bar, is frequently drunk, and still manages to be a pretty rad mom. Apparently it's a series that a ton of people really hate, but overall I was happy I watched it, probably even watch it again eventually.

Edit: Knt's art is still mostly good though! It's just occasionally things get....odd.

Toradora's author is writing a new series called "Golden Time", about a similar -- but older -- group of people, set at the university. The first book was quite excellent, and with any luck it will end up animated (or translated), so fans of Toradora get to enjoy it soon. Second novel is coming out in March, and I can't wait.

Oh hey, that's pretty cool news. I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

Adding to the group that says Horo Musuko is a good read, I'm only a few chapters in right now because I'm torn on watching the upcoming series or reading it first, but I like the look at sex and gender from a different country and culture. The animation style looks kind of similar to Aoi Hana but as far as I can tell they don't have anything in common animation studio-wise. I really like that watercolor-y look though, probably enough to have given the show a look without even knowing anything about it.

I just finished reading through Girl Friends. I liked the romantic leads well enough, but the rest of the cast I can barely remember. That was kind of dissapointing after reading all the different romance stories where the secondary cast is full of awesome people. Still, overall pretty good I thought, there's a lot more talk of sex and sexuality than the other stuff I've read which caught me off guard a bit, but even with that, and a bit of nudity it's still not porn or anything. It's just after reading so many things where someone freaks out after accidentally brushing someone's hand or something the fact that it was much less "chaste" was actually kind of refreshing.

It also is complete, so it has a beginning, middle and a proper ending!

Over in the Winter 2010 thread someone posted that there was an anime coming up for something called Usagi Drop. I hadn't heard of it before so I decided to give it a look. Turns out it's pretty good! I'm only on chapter 10 or so, but I'm already hooked. It's a josei series that started in '05 and is still ongoing.

I'm lousy at writing descriptions so I'll just give you this one:

TVtropes posted:

Don't you think this world is better than you expected?

One bright autumn day, I learned of Grandpa's demise. Hence I took a leave of absence, packed my bag, and rushed home. Only to find a little girl I had never seen before.

When Daikichi Kawachi questions his mother, he learns that the six-year-old girl is Rin, his grandfather's illegitimate daughter. When everybody else in the family makes excuses to avoid taking care of her, Daikichi gets pissed off and impulsively takes her in himself.

It's similar to Yotsuba& in some ways although overall more serious in tone. Not that there's not humor, it's just a little more realistic look at raising a child as a single guy who stumbled into fatherhood rather unexpectedly.

One thing I've noticed that although Yotsuba and Rin are very, very different personality-wise they both feel like accurate portrayals of 5-6 years olds, which is kind of neat.

I'm starting to wonder if there ever be more chapters for Aoi Hana. The last chapter came out in November and it comes out every two months, but I haven't seen anything since then. I wonder if it's behind in publishing or translating, I can't find anything about a hiatus anywhere. I suppose it's possible she's concentrating on Hourou Musuko with the anime for that currently airing.

Maybe I just need to work on my patience, it hasn't really been that long.

Edit: maybe now is a good time to start Oresama Teacher or read some of Yazawa's stuff.

Oresama Teacher looks to be pretty amusing, though I'm not that far in to it yet. I just want to complain that there is way too much English being written in vertical columns. It's really hard to read that way.

Edit: and there's Aoi Hana 37 too. Spoilers I guess; Fumi's come out to even more people, and so far it's gone really well for her (as could only be hoped) I'm worried for her if or when someone doesn't take it as well. :( Overall a nice little chapter. Just finished up watching the Paradise Kiss anime, loved it start to finish. Everything was so good except for the actual animation quality, but that's alright. I decided to hold off on watching Nana for a bit, while I definitely don't have a problem with and usually enjoy shows/books/comics with believable drama and/or heartbreak in general, I do seem to be having a problem with that sort of thing at this particular point. Definitely will be checking it out in the future though.

Other than a handful of horror films, I'm not familiar with Japanese movies and aren't sure if I would enjoy this or not, but here's an English subbed trailer for the upcomming Paradise Kiss live action film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMSZu_3S6vE

I recently stared both Ore-sama Teacher and Good Ending but neither have really grabbed me. With Oresama none of the characters have interested me and teacher/student romantic interest just seems weird to me, even if that's a pretty common trope all over the place. Not a fan of the delinquent fighting stuff either, for whatever reason. I can't put my finger on why GE isn't interesting me, maybe it's just my mood, maybe it's just shonen romance is different than shoujo romance and I'm not used to it yet. Putting these two on hold for a bit, I'll revisit them later on perhaps.

Edit: it turns out the perfect remedy to being in a funk is to read something that is ridiculous and funny. Dragon Half for example. The sudden art shifts and off the wall humor is just as good, if not better in the manga than the (sadly only) two episode anime. It sure isn't shoujo, but drat it's fun. :xd:

Re-edit: at about halfway through it turned from a funny comic with tongue in cheek cheesecake bits to attempting to be actually titillating and the art lost whole lot of its' charm, the storyline is still amusing at least.

Kusaru posted:

Does anyone have suggestions for romance with actual progress involving people past high school?

Itazura na Kiss "Playful Kiss" starts out in high school and continues all the way through the end of college. It's good and I enjoyed it, but the male lead/love interest pissed me off throughout most of it. Other than him, everyone else in the cast is pretty decent though. I haven't read the manga, but the anime is available here, and hasn't had a US release.

Honey and Clover is a great show too, the only thing I didn't like was Yuuta's overly long bicycle trip, I appreciate what it did for his character it just went on too long for my tastes.

A series that I've recently fallen for (and am anxiously awaiting the final two chapters to be released) is Octave, assuming you don't mind if the two leads are both women. One is a singer who quit high school to try to make it in an idol group, the other is a singer-songwriter she meets when she moves to Tokyo. Unlike most yuri-type stuff it actually deals with and discusses issues of sexual orientation. Lots of ups and downs throughout it, some pretty big mistakes are made and sometimes the characters can be infuriating, but believably and interestingly so. It also deals with and shows sex and sexuality fairly explicitly, while it's definitely not even close to being porn it would definitely get an R rating if it were a movie.

It's a good read though, more people should give it a look if only so you can wait, like I am, for it to be completed as you hope that the end is a good ending for the both of them. They've been through some pretty serious poo poo, and not all of it has been resolved really. :( As a straight guy I can't even properly imagine what it must be like to worry about something as huge as coming out to your friends or family, watching Yukino deal with all of that is pretty heart breaking, especially when it reminds me of friends' experiences a bit.

Edit: I somehow posted this when I was still working on it,that's what I get for doing things in multiple tabs at least I managed not to triple-post or something.

Despite it not really interesting me at first, I think Good Ending has finally gotten its hooks into me. I'm just past a post heartbreak karaoke scene but I'm sure it will be nothing but rainbows and kittens from here on out right? I mean judging from my other favorite series like: KnT, Aoi Hana, Lovely Complex, Octave, Honey & Clover and Sasameki Koto I can't imagine that it will be anything other than smooth sailing ahead for our group of knuckleheaded protagonists.

...

:smith:

E: The amount of fanservice is a little off putting, just because it doesn't actually contribute anything to the story. I love Octave and that has sex scenes between the characters so it's not some puritanical thing, I just really don't care about seeing random butt or boob shots scattered throughout the storline. It isn't a deal breaker, but it pulls me out of the story.

Dear god, I don't think I, or anyone I know has ever fallen and ended up in some sort of risqué position, but it's happened like 700 times so far and I'm only on chapter 60. Good Ending: the manga where people fall on each other all the time.

 So, yeah that's pretty cool.

Good Ending 73 and 74 are out. I feel kind of like we need some sort of oncoming train emoticon. :inevitability:
Even though sometimes the way the faces are drawn reminds me of little grey aliens I'm glad that you guys convinced me to take a look at the series, it's been mostly enjoyable. Occasionally it feels a bit too much like "nice guy" wish fulfillment with the way Utsumi constantly seems to have babes flocking around him like geese, but for the most part the characterizations have been pretty good. (it's all going to go horribly wrong isn't it?)

I just ran across a fun and sweet series called Manga no tsukurikata about a couple mangaka who start seeing each other when one of them decides to start to pretend-date her friend who has had a long standing crush on her. It's been a good mix of sweet, funny and wistful so far as well as going into the process of manga creation a little. So I guess it's sort of like Bakuman only with girls...well not quite, really only in the way that it's a romance and is also about making manga, otherwise the storyline is completely different. Despite its pretty silly premise it's a good read.

With that I feel like I've reached the end of the worthwhile romance stuff involving two women, 99% of everything else that I've so much as glanced at is either just porn or the same "onee-sama :swoon:" "oh no, she'll never love me. Oh wait yes she does. end" garbage over and over. I shouldn't be surprised I guess (Sturgeon's Law and all), but since the first romance/non shonen or seinen anime I watched was Sasameki Koto I was tricked into thinking that I might enjoy other things that seemed similar. That's alright though, I did find some good stuff too.

Overall though the series that turned out to be good stand right along side Kimi ni Todoke and Lovely Complex as good romantic and comedic stories. So I can completely recommend the following:
Aoi Hana, Manga no Tsukurikata, Sasimeki Koto, Girl Friends, and Octave . And now I'll probably shut up about yuri or shoujo-ai or whatever is the preferred term, my brief journey of interest in it as a genre has left me somewhere between pretty annoyed and kind of creeped out.

Those five series are all pretty drat good though, so if you're looking for something to read or watch that has all the romance and romantic mishaps that makes things like KnT, LoveCom and GE so enjoyable you should give them a look. Aoi Hana and Sasimeki Koto both have 12 episode animes that I'd recommend watching and then picking up the manga from where they end, since neither is ever going to get a second season you can watch without worrying about a new season popping up that you'd rather watch.

Now for a straight romance question: how is the Skip Beat anime?

Good Ending 75: Hilarious awkwardness ensues. Dude you can relax a little bit now, she really seriously and obviously is head over heals for you.

Octave 35: For the second to last chapter it seems like they're going to leave a lot of things unresolved, but at least they are both talking about some of those things which at least implies that they will work on them in the future. It's been a good story, I'm honestly sad to know that it's over.

Good Ending 77 is out. Ah to be a stupid overly horny teenager again. :allears: No wait, that time period sucked!

Aoi Hana 38 shows that leaving your bottle of Christmas champagne just hanging around is too much temptation for even a normally well behaved high school girl and her girlfriend. Much like in Horou Musuko she really captures that mixture of hope, fear, longing, and uncertainty that young love has.

Manga no Tsukurikata 35 got released too, and much like always, nothing really happened. That's alright though, the whole thing has been amusingly low key and full of sweet little moments in time, not giant plot shaking events.

Holy poo poo, new Usagi Drop. And "holy poo poo" is pretty much the best description for this issue. I think the next issue will be the last one which is kind of a shame, but then again, having things end rather than drag them on for all eternity definitely has its merits. Plus they're animating it, so that's pretty cool.

The Yen Press versions are pretty good too, I can't wait til the rest come out.

The whole run of KnT is up on Somemanga, the updates show up there really quickly too. There is a thread for the anime that has been doubling as mangachat too, but now that the show's over I dunno if it really is necessary, I know a bunch of people read it, but it doesn't really inspire a whole lot of conversation.

You weren't kidding, the cuteness levels were off the chart (again). Matching hawaiian shirts for the dads. :3:

After the long, long process of getting Sawako and Kazehaya together it's nice to see she's letting the rest of the cast get some development too, don't get me wrong, I really like the leads, but one of the reasons I got hooked on this story is the cast as a whole. It sure isn't going super great for most of them right now though is it? Hopefully they will realise that some of the things they tried to get Sawako and Shota to understand over the past couple years will help them sort their own feelings out.

Kimi ni Todoke 58:
The fact that it was Ayane of all people, the one person who has been trying since practically the beginning to get them together made me laugh enough to drown out any minor annoyance about typical shoujo antics. It does seem that those two at least are succeeding at getting closer to each other and that they will actually successfully kiss each other sooner rather than later. Regarding the rest of the cast, I swear Chizu and Ryu know even less what to do with whatever feelings they have for each other than Sawako and Kazehaya did/do. Haven't you two learned anything by thinking about what those two went through over the last year(s)?

Despite that, I actually really like the slow languorous pace of this and other shoujo romance stuff. Even all the pages that are just close ups of eyes, fingertips, sparkles and whatever, even though I know that in some ways those things just eat up pages they also convey the mood and feelings the characters are experiencing in a way that's both effective and novel to me.

Full two minute trailer for the upcoming live action Paradise Kiss movie. The lack of blue hair is a bummer, but not a deal breaker, and I'd have loved to hear "Lonely in Gorgeous" in there, maybe it will make an appearance in the movie itself.

That reminds me I need to actually sit down and watch the movie for Kimi ni Todoke too, rather than giving up after ten minutes, which probably wasn't enough time to form an actual informed opinion on it.

Octave wrapped up its final chapter and it ended really well. They wrapped up some things, other things aren't perfect but they are looking to their future together and overall it seems optimistic, but not unrealistically so. It also appears that Yukino has come out to her mother (I actually think her mom suspected the last time she was home) and she seems to have taken it well. Which is good, they've really been through some pretty serious crap over the course of the series. Definitely worth a read if you enjoy the romance genre at all, don't let the fact that it's supposedly yuri deter you, this feels believably like a couple of twentysomethings crashing into love, with all the dizzying highs and maddening lows that your first real love can bring.

Also, drat it Good Ending, you are going to make me crazy with your constant Good Ending-ness.

I've read the Lovely Complex Plus, the extra chapters that completely unnecessarily adds some stuff about how they had actually met way earlier, and also has a bit of them in their college years that I did actually enjoy, even if the translation I read was pretty bad. I haven't made it all the way through the main story of the manga even though I enjoyed reading the parts that I did. It just made me want to watch the anime again, so that's what I ended up doing instead and haven't gone back to continue reading.

Chapter 83 is out for Good Ending and I swear I'm about to just give up on it, not every single girl in the city needs to have to want to hump our lead for it to be an interesting story. Maybe it's the difference between shounen and shoujo romance or something, but it's starting to get on my nerves. Edit: I think I've bitched about this series in the exact same way before, how repetitive of me.

Oh who am I kidding, I'll probably stick with reading it for quite a while, because I'm hooked enough to keep letting it jerk me around. :smithicide:

Since the summer season is rather thin I finally got a chance to start watching Kare Kano, only four episodes in but I think I love it. It's sweet and hilarious, her little sisters both rule and make me laugh, all of the art shifts and sight gags are amazing, non of the characters are horrible jerks. It's a shame that due to creative differences it all falls apart later on. Based on what I've seen so far I'll enjoy the hell out of it until then.

Kimi ni Todoke chapter 59 is out too. Yano, :( you poor messed up kid. These last few chapters have highlighted the fact that even though all Sawako and Kazehaya's friends could see their problems and try to help those two out, they're still really blind to their own feelings and what to do with them.

It doesn't really do me any good other than to make me wish I read even a little Japanese, but Takako Shimura author of Wandering Son and Aoi Hana has started a web series called Awajima Hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Awajima) set in an all female musical theater school. She looks to be doing some fun things with flash, so if it somehow gets a translation hopefully they can keep that aspect of it.

You can read a whole lot more about it at Matt Thorn's blog. He's the one who is doing the English localization/translation for Wandering Son and has some pretty decent insights on localization and also on LGBT issues in Japan.

For you that have read up to the end, or just looked at the spoilers to see what all the fuss is about don't that dissuade you from watching the anime that's currently airing. There's literally nothing in the entire first half of the story (25 chapters or so) or even most of the second half that would lead you to believe that's where she was taking the story. The anime is only going to be 11 episodes and that will get nowhere near where the author lost her drat mind.

It's terrible writing, but even if it was good writing it's still just about the stupidest ending possible.

That's great news, I had no idea at all they had a decent US release coming up, much less out.

Earlier someone had mentioned the light novels Golden Time by Toradora author Yuyuko Takemiya. Looks like it's getting a manga adaptation starting in September. I'm interested in checking it out since I liked the Toradora anime (haven't rend the novels or their manga adaptation).

I wonder if it's on a path to being animated though, maybe I should just wait for that to happen.

Dark cloud, poisonous taint, unholy abomination. I honestly 100% believe that I would be happier right now if I never had read past volume 4. Maybe include volume 5 then full stop, even with the Kouki's mom cliffhanger.

I kept thinking to myself during the last volume, "Where did this all go wrong?" What happened to the sweet Rin and hapless Daikichi I had come to know and adore? The first four volumes was pure bliss, a uplifting story about a young man who spontaneously decides to become a father. The fifth volume was a story of Rin growing into her womanhood - I liked it. Yet somehow by the last volume, this manga turned into the worst trainwreck ending I've ever seen.

I haven't watched the anime yet, but I was going to until now. If there's a second season (for the timeskip) I hope they rewrite the plot from the ground up. Anything to get the image out of my mind of Rin making babies with Daikichi :barf:.

Hey, yeah that's almost my exact reaction to the whole thing. I did decide to watch the animated version and it's just as great as the first half of the story is. My enjoyment is definitely tempered by my knowledge of the bullshit at the end though, that's for drat sure.

I might be misremembering things, but I took that part from the anime as Shuji taking on a sort of permanent guardianship role, not a lover's role (because Hagu was just so broken that there wasn't really any hope for her to have a normal relationship), where he could at least make sure that she was able to continue with her art. It seemed more like a tragic resignation to chaperoned spinsterhood than 'welp, guess we're gonna be an item.'

That's the impression I got too. Unless there's more after the end of Season 2 I think that's all the story there is for it.

Daikichi finds out early on from his grandfather's will, but this is ommited from the story until the very end. He knew the whole time.

Are you loving serious? The more I learn about this the more I hate the author. It's like she made a checklist for What Can I Do To Make This as Stupid As Possible. I haven't actually sat down and read it all the way through I quit when I found out what happens, I think chapter 35 is about when I dropped it, I skimmed some and the rest I've just learned from reading here and various other places.

Whatever, the anime is great and I'm just filing the rest of it away with the first Matrix movie, pre-accident Stephen King, the X-files, the original Star Wars Movies and all sorts of other things I love that ended up turning awful. :(

Could the concept work in a story? Sure, I suppose it both could and has, as distasteful as I might find it. In this particular story though it seems to come with out any foreshadowing, is revealed and explored in a ham-fisted way in a story that up until the end was a straight forward but well written look at a father/daughter relationship and their growth as a family.

If it had been a trashy romance novel I doubt I would have bothered to read it, nor given a poo poo about the ending.

Has anyone ran across anything new and good to read or watch lately? All the things I've been reading are either over (LoveCom, Octave, Kare Kano, Honey & Clover), or I'm caught up with (Aoi Hana, Kimi ni Todoke, Sasameki Koto, Good Ending). There's obviously years and years of thing to read and watch so specifically I'm looking for a new and promising series that I might be interested in.

Don't give them ideas.
While I have pretty much that exact scenario in mind when I think about the remaining episodes, I remain hopeful that it will end right where chapter 24 of the manga ends.

In other misc Shoujo and Romance news:
Kimi ni Todoke is on hiatus til October. :(

Kimi no Iru Machi annoyed me too much to keep reading. Thanks(?) for introducing me to the phrase NTR, now at least I know what to call that sort of thing when it happens. I'm still reading Good Ending despite it doing a lot of the same things that annoyed me with Kimi no Iru Machi, I guess I have a secret need to be jerked around by at least one author.

Sasameki Koto is ending soon and the best scanners/translators for it are still way behind its release since they only do it when the bound volumes come out, rather than the magazine version. It's been all over the place in tone and pacing during its run, overall I still really like it though, and it seems like it should have a decent ending. Even if I do hate when romance stories end basically right when the couple gets together, which by the way, hasn't even happened yet:arghfist::sigh:, but the way it's progressing it seems like it will end with "yay, we're finally together!!""maybe a time skip to see them in the future for a page or two"
