^^^Great list, Tesla. I, too, read a shitload of mediocre shoujo manga :hfive:

Penguin Revolution
First 26 chapters here: http://somemangas.com/manga/Penguin_Revolution/ (I think? The links weren't working when I checked.)
Second half here: http://www.mangafox.com/manga/penguin_revolution/
This is a cute and charming story about how a girl who can spot talent in future idols, and how she becomes and acts as a manager for a potential star. The art is lovely, and what I love about it is how the main protagonist is a pretty capable heroine, who doesn't constantly swoon over all the hot guys around her. That is not to say that there isn't romance and blushing and flowers; it is shoujo after all. But it's pretty tempered with humor, and it's only 7 volumes long. Warning: a fair bit of cross-dressing, and the ending is not as awesome as you'd hope.

Gakuen Alice
http://somemangas.com/manga/Gakuen_Alice/
This is a pretty popular series, so it might be redundant to add it, but whatevs. A pretty comedic story about an elementary school girl who goes to a school for kids with special powers. However, there is a dark conspiracy in the school in how their powers are used. I kinda think of it as a Japanese girly Harry Potter, in that the author has loads of fun creating different and unique powers for each kid, along with "magical" inventions that they can buy and use. However, the series does get darker as it goes on, and pretty melodramatic in its latest chapters. But it starts out really fun, so check it out.

Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/shiawase_kissa_sanchoume/
An energetic, happy, and excitable girl works in cafe with two cute guys. Hijinks ensue. It's a light-hearted and pretty fun series, and the main character is very likable, and not as annoying as you'd think.

Momo
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/momo/
A girl has to convince an alien planet-destroyer, who comes in a guise of an adorable little girl, not to destroy Earth. The art is pretty, and the story is pretty entertaining.

I also second the recommendations for Skip Beat (I don't think it actually has been rec'd yet, but pfft, we all know it's amazing despite how crazy pointy chined, giant male bodied the art can get), Love So Life, Cat Street, Kamisama Hajimemashita, Beast Master, Dengenki Daisy, Glass Mask, Akuma to Love Song.

Are there any romance manga/anime where the main character ends up with someone other than the first guy/girl(aka "destiny person") they see?

Destiny is cool, but I'd rather read something that breaks the mold as well.

Does Hana Yori Dango count?

New Taiyou no Ie. It's mostly Mao/Hiro-centric but I'll take what I can get.

So after that seemingly tossed aside arc with the mom, I'm back to thinking the series is going to end soon again.

Just marathoned through this; I am still bothered by the age difference in the relationship, but the mangaka said her parents having the same age difference was her inspiration, so I knew Mao/Hiro was inevitable even though I was a fan of the brother.

Concerning talk about entertaining couples with leads that aren't just changing completely for one person or are weirdly abusive/uncommunicative: I agree that Last Game is a fun manga. Obviously, the couple in Ore Monogotari!! is amazing. I know Koi dano Ai dano starts out with the guy definitely invading the girl's personal space, but he grows to be more respectful and aware of how inappropriate his actions are over the manga. (It helps that the girl he's crushing on easily dismisses his advances.) The couple in Orange Chocolate starts out as childhood friends, and genuinely seem to like and care about each other. In fact, they are very sweet to one another.

In terms of newer manga, I'm liking Haru Matsu Bokura - the main romantic interests seem to be starting out as actual, normal friends, which is great.

Found a very sweet (like sugar overload sweet) light manga where the couple actually likes each other and communicates their feelings (my favorite kind):

Yeah, my interest petered out on Akagami a while ago, but I will definitely watch the anime if it tightens up the story.

A new chapter of Honey just came out!
Honey is another very sweet manga, very shoujo with pretty art - I am pretty sure it's been linked here before and liked (I hope!).

Fun fact - the characters are based off a one-shot the mangaka did called Granulated Sugar.

Sorry for any cavities!

ahhhh just read Hana to Rakurai and the backstory with the teacher just wrecked me. Then the mood was broken when I had to go outside and shake a possum out of the trash.

Aw, such a bittersweet story - thanks for the rec. Hope you and your possom bush are okay though. (I also am following the Demon Prince of Momochi House - it's pleasant enough so far.)

The latest chapter of Last Game is out.
If they go any slower/be any more dense I am giving up - please do not just have them sitting in a room blushing on separate ends of a couch for the entirety of the next chapter.

Maybe these?

^Cool yo; thanks for sharing! Those starry eyes :swoon:

Here's a fluffy oneshot, Hanabatake no iberico. (Yep, iberico like the fancy Spanish pig.)

I like the clean, simple art of this recent shoujo, Yuugure Light. Only two chapters, but interesting enough so far - it has a jaded main protagonist, but not completely unlikeable, I feel.

At this point, I just want to make my own shoujo manga, where the two romantic leads are both decent people with normal social skills who try to treat each other well and aren't both super dumb. Oh, and relatively close in age or, at least, both over the age of consent and no weird power relationship (e.g. teacher/pupil). It would probably be the most boring manga ever. I guess I can add like a couple of tanukis or something.

I'd read it. But in terms of actual shoujo, I'd say ReRe Hello would fit the bill of sensible romantic leads. The guy starts off as somewhat demanding due to his rich kid status, but he quickly shapes up. It's pretty cute!

Nice, thanks for the rec! I had read the ChibiManga scanslations of this, but your mentioning of it lead me to Raffmanga/Mangalator where there is like 15+ chapters to catch up on : ) (their quality and the mouse-over formatting is eh though). I love the mains! Some of the side characters are kinda obnox coughSereia, Nanamicough, but at least they're intentionally written to be that way.

^^Yeah, I'm really curious as to how this guy isn't an alright match for her. My very wild guess is that by not having the docs, he messes up and gets fired, and she has to support him, and then he shows his bad side in some way, like being acting extra-deadbeat or resentful?? Seems pretty dumb though.

What a lame ending :geno:
Yeah, what a weirdly hollow rush-job. Did the series get unexpectedly canceled or something?

New chapter of Full Dozer is out, by the same mangaka as Usotsuki Lily.
I hope the guy and the rival just end up together.

Principal also got a new release. This manga interests me because I really don't know where the story is going - I have no idea if the MC will actually end up with either of the guys.

Pochi Kuro got updated; it's shounen, but I feel like it's silly/cute enough of story with a romance theme that others here might enjoy it too.

Yes, thank you for validation, this is how I felt - I was like maybe it's because the translation is so well done or maybe because it has such a weird premise. Or maybe it's because the author is so good at making you want each of them to be in a relationship with either her or each other like all at once. It is also strangely clever in how they make the girl clueless to anything romantic but also manage not to characterize her as an airhead.

I got the feeling it's the history club quiet older guy who wears glasses (he is the only one who recognizes her no matter her weight) but as the series goes on, I am like she shouldn't get with any of them and just live her happy otaku spinster life.

Here are some recently updated shoujo manga I have been guiltily enjoying. Summaries may or may not be accurate:

Sekai de Ichiban Warui Majo
http://kissmanga.com/Manga/Sekai-de-Ichiban-Warui-Majo
300 year old witch who has the cutest bestest skeleton deer and some random guy who seems kinda sleaze, but the deer is really adorbs. It's nice how since she's super old, she is unfazed by the guy's put-ons. I too hope to be 300 and single some day.

Hokenshitsu no Kageyama-kun
https://bato.to/comic/_/comics/hokenshitsu-no-kageyama-kun-r20717
Newest manga from the Last Game author - a nice well-meaning girl the size of a hamster deals with an awkward vampire kid who has a cute talking cat.

Koi wa Hito no Hoka
https://bato.to/comic/_/comics/koi-wa-hito-no-hoka-r17977
From the Special A author. Cute talking dog AND cat. Also has strong normal-sized girl, forgotten childhood promise, demon guy, sick younger brother.

Honey come honey
https://bato.to/comic/_/comics/hanikamu-honey-r20847
Girl becomes friends with a grizzly bear (an awkward supposedly scary looking guy, but really just has overgrown bangs and is tall) who makes cute animal trinkets. Cats show up in the second chapter.

Hoshi to Kuzu - Don't Worry, Be Happy
https://bato.to/comic/_/comics/hoshi-to-kuzu-dont-worry-be-happy-r19883
Ambitious girl joins student council and meets equally ambitious boy, hinting at a future power couple to take over the world. Stray cat shows up in second chapter.

Kimi wa Kawaii Onnanoko
https://bato.to/comic/_/comics/kimi-wa-kawaii-onnanoko-r17626
Girl self-conscious about her frail bird-boned body meets a nice tall guy (or maybe he is just tall comparatively?) and mutual sweetness happens. I don't remember any cats but there are probably some at some point.

Hakoniwa no Soleil
https://bato.to/comic/_/comics/hakoniwa-no-soleil-r19147
Intriguing manga about a dead teacher and her brother and a former female student trying to figure out what really happened. No cats.

pandabear
Apr 27, 2006
Oh, and sorry if I spoiled any cats for you guys.

Another really trashy stereotypical shoujo manga I like to read is Ookami-heika no Hanayome.
http://kissmanga.com/Manga/Ookami-heika-no-Hanayome
Girl is hired to be the only consort to a king to ward off marriage proposals. Surprisingly, no cats, only a puppyish king. What is great is that the female protagonist is a huge crybaby, but she is mostly crying about how bad she sucks at her consort job which only requires her to sit around and do nothing - a feeling I relate to deeply. She also cries over the fact the king is obviously just playing her yet she still likes him and I agree with her that yeah he is probably just playing around with her because why would he ever like her for real so it makes the angst feel that much more authentic.

That vampire manga is creepy as gently caress. Mostly not because vampires, the vampire is just a mega-creepy loser stalker.

Maybe a better vampire manga? http://bato.to/comic/_/comics/chikutaku-bonbon-r3276
But generally yeah, most vampires are sad losers as far as I can tell, so I felt like it was true to life. Also I hope it is obvious to all in the thread, I have terrible taste in manga.

For finding new manga to read, I use otakumole, especially for manga that get dropped from scanslation groups. The format is kinda annoying if you don't have a touch screen but it definitely has a ton of manga hard to find elsewhere.

In terms of job manga, I find that the best ones are the ones depicting mangaka.
