The Howard Stern Show Megathread.

All purpose discussion for all things Howard Stern and all programming on the Howard Stern stations on Sirius/XM radio.

The Howard Stern Radio Show

History of the Show
The show developed on terrestrial radio in 1979 when Stern hosted the morning show at WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDUgbYjcE8s
Eventually the show gained momentum and after a few moves to various markets the show landed in Washington DC in 1982.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUZ_3AKox8w
Doing afternoon drivetime on WNBC the show became very popular, however in 1985 Howard was fired. He then moved to WXRK, later known as KROCK. He stayed at KROCK for 20 years. During this time, The Howard Stern Show would be syndicated to 60 marketsacross the United States and Canada.

In December 2005 Stern left terrestrial radio for Sirius satellite radio.

Main crew
Howard Stern - The show revolves around his life and many, many, many, many issues.

Robin Quivers - Howard's "news" woman. Robin has been with Howard for over 20 years. Her role is basically a co-host

Fred Norris- Fred is the sound guy. Anytime you hear a sound or song being played in the background, thats Fred. Most people agree, Fred is the man. He will also still write and send Howard notes.

Gary Dell'Abate - Producer of the radio show. Uses great techniques such as waiting for guests to call him, and playing hours of sporkle.

Benji Bronk - Show writer and the only other person in the studio with Howard, Robin and Fred.

2nd level crew
Scott Salem – Head engineer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZKCO0Bm64Y&feature=related
Richard Christy – writer, performer, drummer and general awesome guy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgAin-xiL-8
Sal Governale – writer, performer, former boiler room stock broker. Will someday be arrested for murdering his wife and her emotional friend.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaShH-FSnlI
Jason Kaplan – associate producer and general pain in the rear end. Has birthday parties for his cats.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ8Ox5TpLlY
Will Murray – researcher, associate producer, and probably the most normal guy on the staff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-alBKtMRfMY
Jamie "JD" Harmeyer – Pulls clips and provides media content. Basically lives at the office and is very underpaid. Oh and he cant really talk.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imBxW0HknY4&feature=related
Ronnie Mund AKA Ronnie the Limo Driver - Howard's head of security and driver or as Colin Quinn calls him "Mini Driver"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSM34LiFbwE

The Wack Pack
Not staff, but a main part of the show and its various bits. What is the wack pack? Thats hard to answer. Its a collection of people who love or hate the show, but all need it in some way. Usually to become a member of the wack pack you must have some sort of physical, mental or emotional problem.
Some great wack packers that you are sure to hear from in 2011.

Other Show Information
Howard signed a new contract for 5 years with Sirius/XM radio. Our favorite baby gorilla Artie Lange has been off the show for over a year due to his attempted suicide.
He is missed and we all hope he gets back to the show at some point.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3lvsfaRn1U

Current plot points heading into the new year
-Filling of the Artie chair. Will anyone ever join the crew, will Artie return or will they keep it going as it is.
-Howard 101 restructuring. See the section about H101 for more information.
-Former staff member KC coming in with the tranny who blew him.

How to listen
The Howard Stern show airs Monday through Thursday 6am-10am EST. It is followed by The Wrap up show with Gary and John Hein. The show is replayed all day.
The West coast feed starts at 6am PST on Channel 101.
Sirius/XM radio requires a subscription. If you subscribe to Sirius you will get the 2 Howard Stern channels. If you subscribe to XM you must include the best of Sirius in your account to get the 2 Stern channels.
You can subscribe by going to their websites.(websites will all be listed below)

Most, it would seem, tend to listen using the internet stream. The Sirius player is bad. I dont know about XM. Most seem to enjoy using the Yahoo Sirius widget

As of Jan 1st 2011 you can now get The Howard channels on your Iphone, blackberry or Android device.

Radioio.com will also have exclusive Bubba shows and on demand content. For all things Bubba visit https://www.btls.com or https://www.twitter.com/btlsradio

Good job, Mr Lance Murdock!

To continue from the other thread and keep with the complaining:

Ending the show at 10:00 doesn't really surprise me, somehow. He's complained about doing a 5 hour show when he's only contracted for 6:00-10:00 for years. Pretty sure even back on testicle radio. I think he's just acting on it now because he really no longer gives a poo poo. The show has become really phoned-in since Artie left... It's obvious he's just collecting a paycheck now.

To open with a complaint, when Howard goes to the 3 day week, he will be doing about 120 shows per year. This is based on my guess that he does 160 shows per year now, and over 210 when he was on terrestrial radio.

edit- That's $1.59 per show if you're paying full retail for Sirius satellite and streaming, because really who gives a poo poo about the music stations.

I like to think that it was when Artie left but I think it was actually before that. I feel like with out Artie's drama, the show would have been horrible for the last 3.5 years of the previous contract. It had something new and magical when they first came over but shortly after that they started going to 4 days and it was just bland.

When Howard got engaged. It all went downhill from there. Some of us older fans thought it would take the show full circle and soon Howard would be back to his old pissed off married self. Sitting in his basement staring at fish tanks.
Sadly, that didnt happen and now we hear about him and his wife getting turkey burgers for dinner. She get cheese and he does not. How cute.

Not in my opinion. The shows following his divorce were actually pretty good and all the shows leading up to Artie getting the Jackie Chair were great, but a lot of that had to do with the fact that they had great people sitting in the Jackie chair.

Absolutely not. The show was about 10 times better with Artie than with Jackie.

I think the show jumped the shark about the 3rd year of Sirius, when they got complacent and no longer attempted at trying to get good guests and Artie's heroin habit got way out of control.

I never realized how annoying it was until I listened to Part 5 of the Artie Addiction Saga: Artie's out of control, he's not as funny as he used to be, and Howard and Robin are just wanting to punch-in/punch-out and go home. The show was on autopilot and Artie was basically the only one there giving an effort and he's crashing hard.

I am well aware of how against the norm my Stern opinions are. I love Eric the Midget and Jackie. Busting on Jackie was always my favorite part of the old show: his lovely jokes, his horrible merchandise, his 12 houses, the jetty, etc. Hysterical. ANYONE doing a Jackie impression never fails to make me laugh. Losing him was a huge blow to the show from which it has never recovered.

And Howard's divorce was the moment that Stern completely lost his levity. It was his final step in the transformation from relatable everyman to old rich douchebag. Despite how often he would crow about what his exploits would be like if he was single, he was constantly mum, saying "I can't talk about it because of my daughters" or passing notes to people in the studio giving out details he was keeping from the audience. Then he started dating someone 20 years younger and it was all over.

That's not to say that the show has not been enjoyable since these two events, but it's was certainly the beginning of the end. I've never like Artie. Never found him funny. Benji in the studio sucks and you can always tell which lame jokes are passed from him to Howard. Then the move to Sirius sent the show into a nosedive.

There's definitely been a few highpoints: the hiring of Richard Christy, discovering Eric the midget, the Sal apology....

After the marriage is when it really fell over as far as I'm concerned.

The beginning of the end though was when Sal told the horse joke at one of the roasts and Beth got all put out over it so Howard prevented anyone from making jokes about her.

I honestly think that the show would be better if they had a goal or some kind of competition. When they were on FM, it was always a war with management, the FCC, station managers, etc. At Sirus everyone kisses his rear end and reminds him on a daily basis how great he is.

When they first got to Sirius, all the rage on the show was directed at CBS and getting the tapes back. Then it was war with XM and soon the FTC over the merger.

There is no incentive to be edgy anymore. If you can sit on top the mountain relying on the same bits and guests on a 3 month rotation and no one can knock you down, why even try?

Jackie and Artie are both hacks but at least Jackie isn't a fat rear end in a top hat that holds his own family hostage. Also Jackie was entertaining on the show whether you laughed with him or at him.

But the show jumped the shark when Howard got divorced and he started to hang out with the very celebrities he used to mock.

Yeah i'm the exact same way, and one of those losers who got what he wanted but hates the outcome. I wanted Artie to get help or get lost, the last few months he was on the show were awful. He would constantly talk over everyone and tell lovely jokes, it was obvious he was hosed up but he was just so god drat annoying. I just wanted to hear Howard, I wanted to listen to what he has to say. Now that Artie's gone Howard is free to talk again and I can't stand it. Robin is free to talk more too and it's just awful (and I used to like her on the show).

I haven't been listening as long as some of you have, but I absolutely agree the show jumped the shark midway through the Sirius years. They had nothing to fight against, nothing to prove and nothing to do to improve their situation. Howard got his subscriber bonus and got the merger, he did what he set out to do and now he can only sit back and collect a cheque.

I agree with Howard's need for a purpose to stay, that's what seemed to be going on the last contract negotiations. He had nothing to rage against, nothing to prove, so he really had no reason to stay so he manufactured this "everyone will fail and be poor if I quit so I have to resign to save everyone" angle (which is true for some but most would have done ok).

Thanks for the links guys. I will add them to the OP ASAP.

I think the main difference between Artie and Jackie is that people could have a conversation with Artie. Howard could talk to him and it made the show flow. You could not talk to Jackie. It was just impossible. Jackie was great for his one liners and to goof. He was also great at knocking Robin down a peg or two.
I have listened to the show for longer then I care to remember, and just personally like it better with Artie. Its almost 2 different shows.

Oh, and F Jackie.

Stern fans want Howard to live in constant fear of being a hypocrite and refuse to change and grow up. The guy is a mental case, and that will never change, but people's environments do. I can't blame him for being in his fifties and refusing to insult celebrities to their face like he's some DJ sharpening to be edgy.

I'm not sure what is worse sometimes: people saying a radio show "jumped the shark" or blaming Howard for his life changing due to wealth.

And Artie's laugh alone is enough to make a day better.
