Why they'd want to do that instead of the Shin Mazinger sequel is beyond me though :iiam:

Even a high quality OAV will be cheaper to make than a full season, and the return on the investment is probably higher as well.

It may be (hoping against hope) that the funds SKL brings in will be put toward a new Shin Mazinger.

EDIT: itt talk about how you successfully got a friend or family member hooked on mecha shows

I've been trying to get my sister into mecha for a while, since she does have a large manga collection that is largely full of drivel.

Early attempts with Voltes V proved rather unsuccessful, but a later attempt with Giant Robo went well.

The sound she made during Alberto's big reveal in the last episode was something between a school girl giggle and the way Hayato laughs when he's elbow deep in a dinosaurs stomach.

There's hope for her.

In other news, X Nebula, who recently subbed all of Dougram, has just released the first 12 episodes of Galient. It's not quite a super robot, but I thought people would be interested despite that.

This is only half true. The new Aquarion show takes place 12,000 years after the last, but Gen Fudo is still a character. He has a beard now.
To compete with the previous Aquarion punching the moon, this show features body-checking the moon. Not bad for a first episode second episode.

The other super robot show, Lagrange, was also surprisingly good, or at least the first episode was. I wasn't sure about the mecha designs at first, but they look good in action, and the fan service wasn't overbearingly awful. It reminded me of "Mayoi Neko Overrun" episode 7, but with less Yuusha and more WWF.

The first chapter of western super robot comic Robot God Akamatsu has just been released online. I don't know a whole lot about this, but the art looks gorgeous. It seems to have an Aztec motif.

RGA' website posted:

Robot God AKAMATSU is a valentine to the Super Robot genre of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Giant robots and monsters attack Boston, and Robot God Akamatsu (RGA, for short) is the city’s only form of defense!

RGA is also about the relationship between a father and his estranged son, about the abuse of power and how far some are willing to go to see their goals met. It’s a little bit Ultraman, a little bit Voltron, a little bit Force Five, and a mighty dollop of Shogun Warriors.

Gravion is an excellently designed robot. It looks gorgeous, it's combination is smooth, it has plenty of gadgets, and it's aesthetic is evocative of it's many predecessors. It also has a bitchin' theme song.

None of that really matters, It doesn't matter how fantastic as the robot is if the actual show is awful. The plot is dead on arrival. The characters are all bland archetypes. Sandman is the only memorable character, but that's mostly because of his voice actor.

And, most heinous of all it's sins, the fight scenes are boring.

But god drat if it isn't a gorgeous machine.
