Alereon posted:There really isn't anything on the desktop that could use 8 cores, much less 16. The 16-core Opteron Bulldozers will be made using two 8-core dies, which has the added benefit of providing a quad-channel connection to the memory, which is quite necessary for servers. yeah I kinda need the 16cores for my virtualization

incoherent posted:You'll hit disk throughput before you saturate a 16 core proc. Besides if you're legit you'd max level the relative weight settings in your hypervisor Yeah hence my Raid 5 and Raid 0+1 arrays, I think I will be fine on disk I/O 6 is good but I am running them about 80% right now

Debating if I should jump onto the FX-8320 I currently have a T1055 @ 3.2, seeing how the FX-8320 is 20 off and I am doing quite a bit of heavy vmware work, it might be a nice upgrade 2 more cores and a bit more L2/L3 cache. I am tossing this up against just getting some Xeon E5-2620, I am sure the E5 wins however it is much more expensive. Does look like a nice improvement... http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/698?vs=147

Rawrbomb posted:While the xbone and ps4 seem to both have 8gb of ram, I somehow doubt that developers will get access to more than 2-4gb. IIRC, Sony already mentioned that Games will have access to 6GB of the ram with 2 reserved for the OS. The xbone, runs DDR3 while the PS4 is running (G)DDR5, it can play an significant impact as the APU will be utilizing the system ram for video processing. Hell my APU got a nice 15fps boost in CS:Go when I went from 1333mhz CAS9 to 1600 CAS9 ram. Anand did a nice writeup, kept me occupied on my lunch today. http://www.anandtech.com/show/6972/xbox-one-hardware-compared-to-playstation-4 Dilbert As FUCK fucked around with this message at 22:55 on May 24, 2013 |

syzygy86 posted:There's really not a point to upgrade to the current AMD stuff at this point. I have a 1100T, and when you compare it to the current FX series, the performance gains are fairly small and not worth the cost. Consider the FX-8350 vs i5-3470. Both are $200, but the i5 has better performance and lower TDP: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/702?vs=697 Are the 6300's gimped on FPU's or is that just the quad cores. My T1055 is running and esxi install, so I am not too worried about how much FPS I can squeeze out of it.

Alereon posted:Anandtech has an article on AMD's server roadmap for later this year and next. Overall there will be lots more APUs, including many low-power server CPUs. Nothing looks particularly promising for AMD, with the exception of opportunities in the Microserver space from their acquisition of SeaMicro and their efficient interconnect fabric IP. If those APU's can do 3D offload for VMware view this will be awesome. However, I am not getting my hopes up.

keyvin posted:Bought an AMD product... A trinity A8 based ASUS laptop. It was a refurb and with a mail in rebate it was $280. I am excited to see what it can do. I know richland is out, but I didn't see anything really compelling to justify paying 30-40% more for a 7% performance gain. I have an A8-4500M in my laptop, and a 7640G with DDR3 1333, it plays CS:GO fairly well at 1920x1080 no AA medium txt no shadows, much better at the 1366x768 screen resolution. Dues EX:HR at 1366x768 medium low and is pretty playable.

poo poo sorry I was on the goon app, I am on the A8-6500. I am looking to upgrade? to the AMD Athlon X4 740 Trinity. To my understanding the 740 had 4 physical cores, unlike the A8-6500 which is 2 cores and 2 FPU's. Should I just gently caress it and go to intel AM3+

Alereon posted:The Athlon X4 740 is same tier APU as what you have but from the previous generation and with the GPU part disabled. If you need more CPU performance you really do need to go Intel. You can't upgrade to an AMD 7000-series APU (new socket), and you couldn't overclock an A10-6800K (OEM motherboard), and a straight upgrade probably wouldn't get you enough to be worth it (~15% max). Ah okay thanks.
