Well, Couric has definitely departed from waking reality on some fronts---a different sort than Conway, but oof. Not that this other book guy fared much better in terms of warped tunnel vision.

I guess next week stands to be livelier depending on what actually goes down as I suppose they had the excuse of being the first ep back from break.

Almost impressive that, time and again, whatever new blood Maher manages to finally book for the show these days winds up being a tremendous jackass like this Fifth Column dude---not impressed at his attempt at stealthy disguise via denim jacket instead of the traditional garb of leather/(and/or)brown suede his ilk are typically cloaked in to alert passerby to discount nigh everything they utter.

Bill is really having a thin existential crisis over his love of the security (theatre) state and "free speech" these days---guess that's the theme of this season under Biden for now.

yeah that guy was insufferable. i never heard of him, but went to look up his lovely podcast, and it's entirely based on aggrieved jagoffs mad about cancel culture and critical race theory and the like.

he's such a snowflake

there's no reason for him to get mad when the audience doesn't immediately laugh or go 'oooh'. but he just gets so offended even when it's not a matter of the audience not liking his work. it's one of the most annoying things about him.

If you're going to have IDW figures on, at least invite someone who can make sense part of the time like Sam Harris. But no, let's go full conspiracy mode and endorse vaccine "skepticism" in the middle of a pandemic instead.

It's Bill Maher. This is the same man who said he doesn't like to heat food in a microwave because he's not sure what the molecules do inside his body.

Bret and wife were lovely guests, their vaccine take is poo poo, but the lab escape hypothesis is actually a lot more likely than we were originally shown:

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/coronavirus-lab-escape-theory.html

A lot of people hear lab escape and think it means lab created. There is clear evidence the virus was not created in a lab. There is no evidence (either way) it wasn't a natural virus being studied in the lab, possibly in gain-of-function experiments, that escaped. In that scenario, an escaped natural virus is indistinguishable from a virus that came directly from the wild.

Ultimately, it doesn't really matter if it did or didn't other than the conversation we should be having about what bio-labs are allowed to do and their poo poo safety record. That article has some very scary data points about just how many accidents these labs see all over the world every year. Eventually, one is going to escape whether covid did or not.

Maher was just trying to gin up some of his classic nat sec saber rattling on China since this veiled notion went over like a lead balloon the last time he put it out there closer to the start of this mess.

He wants everything reopened so badly and blithely he doesn't care who pays the price and how, and no blood washes cleaner from the upper echelon folks like that of scapegoats.

It seems now that Trump is out the show will revert back to focusing on weirdo R politicians week after week. I remember when Bill would talk for weeks on end about Sarah Palin gossip long after she was out of office.

But last night was one of the most bizarrely disconnected ones I recall.

-Airing grievances about owning part of the Mets.

-Redacting names from edifices.

The other perplexing thing is this cancel culture talk. Bill has wanted people cancelled for decades. He's been raging at the religious right for 40+ years and any affiliation they have with politics. And regularly devotes his final new rule to roasting religious texts from all around the world and hoping for their annihilation.

As far as I can tell the people throwing a fit about it right now are just not happy about who's being cancelled. The same people were furious about Heinz ketchup a few years ago because of Teresa Heinz existence. They've been more than content to pillory and ostracize socialists/communists/liberals/leftists/democrats/boogeymen they don't like. A classic case of cognitive dissonance.

This is how cancel culture works. Each side likes it when it is in their favor and hates it when it's in their enemies. The right used to be very pro-cancel culture during the 2000s while the "left" was for free speech. Almost two decades later things have switched including the positions.

The growing disconnect between media and what's going on with the pandemic gets more absurd and bizarre by the week. We're in the midst of a pandemic with real death numbers now quite possibly higher than the entire US civil war death count and it's barely mentioned.

Let's focus on inane school doctrines and Maher ranting about his junky solar panels that will never get built. And then talk about internet defense and military defense spending in the name of keeping US citizens safe and healthy. :laffo:

Imagine if after 9/11 happened the media without missing a beat was throwing a fit about some Marilyn Manson CD and some random violent video game.

remember the 90s when political talk shows would regularly debate whether or not wrestling is real, my god we were all so loving stupid

Bill's show today was something else, he had Scarborough on to complain about how insane trump voters were, then they moved on to complaining about the deficit and how unfortunate it is that rich people are getting $1400 checks. There was one small moment of clarity when Bill pointed out that Democrats are doing nothing for poor people yet again, but aside from that this episode was just wall to wall insanity. I don't know Charlemagne at all but he seemed flabbergasted by this old dude quoting stats about "the blacks" to him
