I think the branding is a lot of it. We got an Eames rocker for Christmas (also produced by Herman Miller) and it is really cool, but not $500 cool. People who know design pay a lot for designer names.

One of my friends picked up a nice orange Eames stackable in a garage sale for like $30, which shows you what most people think that kind of thing is worth when you take the name recognition away.
