How bad a chance of screwing the pooch even further do I have if I try to run/jump? Can I expend a bunch of movement to walk down the side into the 4-height cover again, or is that like "carefully walking off the 4th story of a car park?"

Running/Jumping is a piloting test to avoid a fall (5 piloting + 3 gyro hit = 8), and unfortunately you have to jump to get down from the hill.

The real killer is, if you do fall any hit to an arm or side torso will transfer directly to your center torso, which means you're praying I roll a 5 or a 9 and you take the falling damage to the legs instead. And that you don't kill yourself trying to stand up with a damaged gyro (5 piloting + 3 gyro hit - 2 careful stand = 6).

So pretty bad, statistically, but entertaining to watch. We haven't had too many gyro hits before, so I'm glad people get to see how terrifying they can be.

This is also assuming you manage to get off the map with one point of structure left in your upper body and the inability to build up a solid move mod without falling over and killing yourself.

What I'm saying is the Taurians might take care of your Gyro problems.

Well, I stand by my orders. I either give them free shots or I try to book it and risk tripping on a rock and dieing, and I'm betting that the OpFor is still doing the "Holy poo poo Caesar out of nowhere!" dance and will decline to shoot the unarmed, fleeing thing that only slightly resembles a 'Mech at this point. Unless PTN is playing them like KDR-obsessed MWO pilots, which is entirely within the realm of possibility!

Coronet Espinosa could only smile as his foes battled amongst themselves. Subaltern Wang had been expecting an easy mop-up or a quick surrender from the Capellans and the sudden arrival of New Syrtis `Mechs had thrown the young officer into total confusion. Well, Espinosa thought, he’d paid for his confusion with his life, his heirloom Rifleman had proven no match for the terrifyingly advanced technology of the Duchy and the Capellans. Espinosa wondered if even the rare and nearly irreplaceable marvels they’d acquired from President Amaris would be a match for these new innovations.

All the more reason to strike now, while the two powers were blindsiding each other. Espinosa found the comparison to his current situation amusing: his machine was state-of-the-art in the Concordat, but it felt like a child’s toy compared to the `Mechs on the field. The Huron Warrior was swift and powerful, the Wolverine vicious, and the Griffin and its pilot was a complete monster—and clearly both sides knew the other well. Or at least thought they did.

Clearly expecting the Griffin to flee, the Wolverine and Huron Warriors separated in an attempt to cover its escape routes—but the Griffin’s pilot was too canny and split the gap between them. It touched down in relative safety directly behind the Huron Warrior. The Huron Warrior tried a vain shot with its Gauss Rifle but the heavy weapon tracked too slowly at close range and the silvery streak missed wide.

The Griffin belched missiles from its shoulder-mounted launchers, and Espinosa couldn’t help but grin as several found the gaping rent his allies had put in that devastating machine’s rear armor. He almost wanted to see the New Syrtis pilot win. Almost.

The Wolverine twisted and struggled to line up a shot but its efforts were in vain, the Griffin was in its blindspot. The machine spun, and Espinosa called out a warning as the Capellan pilot took a frustration potshot at the fleeing, helpless Hunter. A cloud of oily flame burst from the tank’s flamer, creating a cloud of thick black smoke that spoiled the enemy pilot’s aim, the flickering beam of the Wolverine’s pulse laser missed the tank by half a meter. Mollita painted a grim picture, those shots had been far too close for comfort; and while Espinosa had no particular love for the vehicle crews they were still Taurian soldiers.

He glowered, no longer content to let the Capellans and the Duchy fight it out. He was certain now: if the Taurians couldn’t win and given a choice between the other two? He wanted the Duchy of “Also Davions” to win.

********************

Sergeant Sommers followed close at Lieutenant Bellard’s heels, his ponderously slow Blackjack struggling to keep up with swifter, lighter `Mechs. He’d always hated the Blackjack’s terrible performance. At only forty-five tons he was barely more maneuverable than the Colonel’s seventy-ton Caeser. The Blackjack’s only real advantage was firepower: as a light-heavy he had enough armament to decimate other machines in his own weightclass. At least, he would if half of his armament hadn’t been shot away.

The Taurian Phoenix squatted at the top of the hill, its blocky, ungangly body speaking of a primitive, low-tech origin. It was a killing machine that didn’t pretend to be anything else, and the ominous glow of its PPC was proof enough of its intent. Bellard shot first, his large laser catching the heavier Taurian machine in the hip. The laser’s pulse, which didn’t last long enough for the human eye to truly see, lingered for a few moments in an almost artfully render by the Blackjack’s targeting computer.

It wasn’t enough to shake the Taurian’s aim, the PPC crossed the distance in a heartbeat and burned clean through the Watchman’s left shoulder. The machine’s arm fell away in a shower of sparks, but it was the flight of barely-visible SRMs that followed and did the real damage: one of the missiles slipped past the Watchman’s tattered armor, its shaped charge detonating against the side of the Watchman’s ammo bin.

Dorian’s machine stood stock-still for a moment and then, with a smooth, casual motion that seemed to Sommers to take hours but in reality took less than the time it took for him to suck in a fearful breath the Watchman extended its right arm away from its body, holding the Firebee’s battered cockpit as far away as possible.

The air itself shook visibly as the Watchman’s left side vanished in a cloud of smoke and fire, the shockwave kicking up a fresh cloud of the radioactive ash that clung to every surface. White-hot metal glanced from the Blackjack’s chest and sent a fresh cloud of steam hissing from the surface of the Yantai river. The Watchman was driven to its knees, but still Bellard hung on, protecting the Firebee’s cockpit with the bulk of his `Mech.

Sommers didn’t roar for vengeance, didn’t cry out for his commander. With slow deliberation, he brought his Blackjack around to regard the distant Phoenix.

“Lieutenant, is your wife alright?”

“Think so,” Bellard sounded concussed, which was to be expected.

“Good,” Sommers hissed as his PPC flashed upwards at the gloating Phoenix, burning away its transplex canopy and venting the rest of its fury into the myomer supporting it. The Phoenix’s left arm rose, its hand grasping as though trying to shield its face—and then the machine collapsed in a mechanical seizure as its pilot got his first lungful of radioactive ash. Sommers smiled, “I just got her a new ride.”

1315 looks like a slightly better spot to jump to, since that means the Gauss Rifle doesn't suffer min-range penalties with the uploading. Walking to 1317 could work as well, with a much better chance to hit the Cicada all around, though PTN cleverly put the Plainsman in position to pepper the Caesar with SRMs if Tiny chooses to do that.

EDIT:

goatface posted:

I was thinking that by the end of next turn that Caesar needs to be thinking about running North as well. Their incredibly short firepower advantage is over.

From 1317 he can jump over the 4-height hill to 1313 and break LOS from the Rampage the immediate next turn, and from 1315 he's already on the hill so the same applies, just with a farther head start on escaping.

Running with a damaged gyro? Yes, you could accidentally fall over. Walking, on the other hand, is perfectly fine.

Guys, find a woman who looks at you the way GhostStalker looks at every bald, obese, single 58 year old accountant from Tulsa who managed to win $4,000 by not wagering on a Final Jeopardy triple stumper.

That was a really lucky shot for the Blackjack there, head-capping the Phoenix like that and having the pilot die from radiation poisoning. And what did someone just say about the Blackjack not hitting anything so far this mission? Guess the first hit it made really counted. Too bad about the Watchman, though. Sure, CASE might've prevented the loss of the entire mech, but it's now missing half its body and down to just two Medium Lasers. At least the Firebee's head wasn't mauled by the ammo explosion due to the Watchman doing its best to protect it. But seriously, that machine gun ammo is dangerous, losing half the mech and taking two pilot hits like that... Maybe it should've been dumped when you had the chance. Crazy lucky shot there by the Phoenix, but the lucky shot in return by the Blackjack all but made up for it. Really loved the way you wrote it in your fluff too, PTN. Keep up the good work.

Still, everyone at Yantai should really be bugging out right now. The Raven might have some trouble, what with the wrecked gyro causing pilot checks pretty much every turn when running or jumping, but the rest of you guys should just run while taking any potshots that you can. Even the Caesar, which hasn't taken any hits so far but hasn't dealt out any damage in return, probably won't last long against that pristine Rampage, whatever weapons its packing, and there's still that Cicada packing a PPC out there.

As for Impact Point Zero, nice shooting by the Griffin. Capellans looked to divide and conquer, but the Griffin just stuck with the Huron Warrior and made it pay. Both Capellan mechs with vulnerable rear torsos pretty much stripped of armor and 2 engine hits, while the Griffin hasn't taken all that much in comparison. Looks like this is going to be over soon...

The remaining Taurian pilot all but declaring that he'll be supporting the DNS mechs makes this all but over, I would think, though I wonder what made him make that choice... I thought that the Taurians were specifically coming after the DNS due to what they thought Duke Hasek did to arrange the death of the Taurian Protector Calderon. Or am I misinterpreting something?

Still, the way you wrote the Taurian pilot's perspective was great as well. Makes me want to continue reading about him. Great job.

The last Taurian mech can win if it gets lucky, but its far less likely if it supports the DNS mech. The Cronus should probably hold its fire and wait for the Griffin to use the rest of its SRMs to finish off the Capellans before engaging it. Though it requires that the Griffin doesn't suddenly explode which could happen any time.
And stunning maneuvering btw Ferrosol!

I don't see that. The IS LPL is a close-range weapon, so you fire the LRMs and AC slugs while you MASC in close, then fire everything but the LRMs while you brawl.

Hopefully the SRMs and AC submunitions will jelly the enemy pilot, if not, you've got good staying power and heat efficiency. Hell, you could even fire the LRMs at a secondary target if you want.

Sweat poured down the back of Cy’s neck as the ungangly Caesar lifted itself into the air. His father had taught him how to pilot a BattleMech but he’d never really fired the weapons; and the AgroMechs he’d trained on hadn’t had jump jets. He kept things stable, but as he ascended the low bluffs Cy worried he’d made a critical mistake. The Caesar’s broad, birdlike feet hung below the flying `Mech, knees bent and braced for impact. The toes scraped the top of the bluff stone, and Cy had to scramble to keep from slipping off the ledge he’d barely cleared.

He stumbled and the Caesar flailed gracelessly as Cy struggled to keep his balance. The faint buzzing sound that filled the back of his head intensified as his Neurohelmet struggled to direct the machine’s DI Computer. The machine was familiar with him but that didn’t stop the noise. His father had looked at him like he was crazy when he mentioned it. He’d been worried until one of the battalion’s technicians had told him it wasn’t unusual and he’d soon learn to tune it out. His father was the rare case, rather than the other way around.

The persistent buzz was still distracting, and seemed so much worse now that he was in combat. He felt like he’d forgotten everything his father had taught him, and the Caesar’s formerly familiar controls were confusing and alien. It was as if someone had rearranged the whole cockpit in the hours after the Taurian’s initial bombardment; though he knew that wasn’t the case. The buttons and switches where exactly where they should be—but he found himself wasting critical time hunting for controls he should’ve known. A trainer might’ve forgiven him for rushing things.

The Taurians didn’t. His hasty shots bracketed the Cicada, shattering boulders and blasting craters in the ground on either side of the ungainly scout `Mech. The Cicada leaned forward, its stubby, weaponless arms twisting in a gesture resembling a shrug, then fired its torso-mounted lasers. The first laser missed wide, but the second found the open barrel of the Caesar’s Gauss Rifle. The finely-tuned weapon tore itself apart as its high-density capacitors exploded in a blinding flash.

The buzzing noise intensified into a piercing shriek that bored into Cy’s brain like a power drill.
