Yeah, I really liked that design; but the five extra tons pushed it into "not a Goliath" territory. Kinda the same way a Japanese operating system make the Katana and the Crockett different `Mechs (even though they're functionally identical). I'm probably going to follow this up with a contest where you'll have far more ability to cut loose. I just want a day or two to get my thoughts in order and make sure I'm not making the same mistakes.

I edited my votes into my last post, not realizing it was at the bottom of a page and there was already a new page. So here they are again: Votes: 2pts: Hunchback HBK-5HS, by fool_of_sound 1pt: Vindicator VND-5R, by dis astranagant I'm a sucker for designs that bring a whole lot of small weapons to bear on a fast chassis. Rolling lots of dice means you'll almost always hit with at least a few, even on high to-hits, smoothing out the variance of combat and allowing for more reliable tactical decisions. Plus, it's just fun to run in behind someone and plow 10 lasers or 12 streak SRM-2s into their back. DQ pick (1 point): MAD-1X Maurauder, by Octavion LB 10-X AC is fantastic, four is four times the fantastic. "Sandpaper" is a specialist role! Also it's gauche to vote for my own entry so I'll just say to everyone else, come on, don't you want to vote for the quad mech? Quad mechs are the sexiest mechs.

Otaktay chanted in low tones, the words coming to his lips automatically in the few seconds that had passed since Anong’s Wolverine fell. He was unburned by a desire to live, only by a desire to win. It had been a good fight, in a way, but even that didn’t matter. If he had to club the New Syrtis `Mech to unrecognizable scrap with his Gauss Rifle, he’d win. Or die, but Otaktay had always refused to accept that there may be a middle ground. He focused on the Griffin, tuning out the world around him; the Cronus, looming like a colossal metal vulture on its distant ridge, was as a shadow. He knew it was there, monitored it, but unless it acted he would ignore it. There would be time enough to club it to death as well, once the New Syrtis `Mech lay dead at his feet. It sat on a far hill, heat sinks shimmering as it struggled to recover from the damage Anong had done. Otaktay twisted and fired, and could only smile as his Gauss Rifle struck the Griffin in the shin. The force of the blow was nearly enough to knock the fifty-five ton war machine from its feet; but the `Mech recovered in an instant. The pilot was good, but Otaktay already knew that. There was no room in his heart for fear of other men. ******************** Cy’s breath came in ragged gasps as he fought past the thunderstorm in his skull. He felt disjointed, almost disembodied, as though her were staring down at himself and piloting the Caesar with a marionette. The poetic portion of his mind wondered if maybe he was feeling the Caesar’s pain, as though he were simply a part of it. His logical mind told him that it was just neural feedback from the destruction of his Gauss Rifle; that the disassociation he felt was a sign of possible brain damage. It was getting worse, too. He was starting to have entire mental conversations, after all. The childish portion of his brain wondered if this hallucination was any stranger than the one’s he’d experienced chewing on the bark of a tree native to Sirdar’s southern continent. That had been quite an experience, one he wasn’t sure he wanted to repeat. It’d been given to him by a Lieutenant in the militia. Perfectly safe, the man had told him, because it was neither habit forming nor a particularly enjoyable experience. Cy hadn’t cared, back then it’d just been another way to make his father pay attention to him. Except it hadn’t worked. His father hadn’t come home that day, and he’d spent twelve hours curled in a fetal position hugging his knees and swatting at the dark things moving at the edges of his vision. He couldn’t remember much about that night. He wouldn’t remember. A dark thing flashed through the corner of his vision, a flat, pill-shaped beehive disgorging a swarm of SRMs. He twitched, stopping short and the missiles flashed by harmlessly. He twitched again, muscle memory taking over as his conscious mind stepped aside for another debate. Its vulnerable rear armor opened by a lucky hit from a small laser, the Plainsman hovertank listed lazily to one side then flipped as it struck a boulder. Burning, convulsing bodies flew from the tumbling wreckage and Cy’s mind snapped back together as he fought the urge to throw up. Probably 2 rounds left of Yantai and Impact Point Zero is entering the end stage now as the Huron is encouraged towards short range to utilize it's Medium Pulse Laser, the last two rounds of gauss ammo likely to be expended as it moves closer, and the Griffin unlikely to pull away in order to expend it's SRM ammo efficiently and for the chance to get behind the Huron or even just exchange attacks in melee combat.

Sergeant Fynn Weber hung in silent agony, his arms crossed tightly over his chest in the ‘crash position’ his instructors back at the academy had taught him so long ago. He’d weathered his own `Mech’s impact fairly well, but the restraint straps dug into his flesh at the shoulder and his right arm had gone completely numb. His Griffin lay on its face, so the bulk of Fynn’s forward view was dominated by darkness or rocky soil depending on how much light the individual cameras that provided the machine’s three-hundred and sixty-degree panorama were getting. To his right the Huron Warrior lay still, and if his secondary monitor was accurate it would remain that way for some time. He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to muster enough willpower to stand. At least the fight was over. Fynn’s eyes snapped open as his DI Computer beeped a target warning. The bulky, boxy form of the Cronus expanded as the machine charged his position. He didn’t even have to squint to see the lenses of the war machine’s lasers, and were it Fynn’s choice fighting would’ve been his last choice. “drat you, you vulture,” he hissed through gritted teeth. “When I get up, I’m going to make you regret sticking around!” ******************** “drat, you’re good,” Cy breathed as the Cicada put its impressive speed to use. The smaller `Mech made a wide, sweeping turn at a full run, and didn’t stop until it was in the copse of heavy trees Cy had been planning on rushing towards only a few moments before. The thick woods confused his `Mech’s targeting sensors, and the Cicada’s outline blurred as it patrolled a thirty meter stretch like a hunting hound. Cy watched it like a hawk, not wanting to lose it completely in the dense wood but his eyes kept shifting away almost of their own accord. Cy had no doubt that big guy was still out there. How fast was it? How much longer until he’d be completely exposed to enemy fire? If he did escape with the others, would that damned Cicada pursue even if it risked blundering into an ambush? Cy just didn’t have any answers. He just wished one of the others had stuck around to give him some advice.
