Not really relevant here since we do have a dedicated MWO thread over in games, but this is true.

Players who spent any money on the game ever will be getting the worst Centurion variant ever (CN9-AH) for free. I just can't conscience advising anyone to spend any money on MechWarrior Online in the hopes of a free (sight-unseen) King Crab. PGI has made some promising choices in the days since the Transpocalypse, but they've got a lot of work to do to extinguish all of those burning bridges.

So, Community Warfare's an awesome thing to come back and find is happening!

Question though- are matches where customs are used submittable? I ask not because I want to use some minmaxed mixtech abomination but for less extreme things. Mostly I'm wondering about giving existing vehicles Fuel Cell upgrades that doesn't already have them.

Yup, just flag the match as 'experimental' on the submission form and make sure your opponent's willing to let you use them!

Yup yup, can do! I'll probably put in the customs in the notes part of the form too. Fuel Cell's just so good for non-energy using vees.

Trial By Fire: Tactical Update 15

“Advancing on the enemy position. Shoji, Rayford, back me up!”

“Roger.”

Rayford’s world spun in and out of focus as some unseen force twisted and pulled at his cockpit displays, stretching them like machine-stretched taffy. His body jerked as autocannon fire punched him in the sternum again and again. The woosh of enemy flamers in his ears was replaced with the high-pitched whine of a charging PPC Capacitor, but the significance of any of it was lost to him.

“Rayford, you coming?” His radio asked, unintelligibly.

“—Armor’s penetrated, I’m in—”

“—me too—”

“—need—”

“—withdraw—”

****************************************

The door to the dimly-lit command bunker burst open as a young man in a medical Lieutenant’s uniform burst through. His uniform was crisp and his left shoulder sported a brand new Command & Control patch; but was otherwise devoid of any field service ribbons. He was a triage monitor, better known colloquial as a “Big Doctor” by Mechwarriors: a medical officer whose primary duty was assessing the physical and mental health of a pilot in the field. They were considered a necessity by the manpower-starved New Rim World Republic Self-Defense Force and grudgingly the 331st had added a fair number to their roster.

The Republic had never had issue equipping its soldiers, but with a state economy focused on the next big colonial venture, no centralized or officially-acknowledged nobility and only a few “proud warrior heritages” to rely on, finding anyone willing to voluntarily become a Mechwarrior was exceedingly rare. They were a resource far more valuable than any machine and so the Republic rewarded them commensurately in a vain attempt to lure in as many fresh faces as they could. Any soldier who served in the field would never want for food, lodgings, work, or healthcare; and while on active duty their health was carefully monitored.

In Jaime’s opinion, the Republic military could do with a little less mollycoddling. He suspected the Republic’s insistence on monitoring nearly every aspect of an active duty soldier’s health and mental well-being was driving away more potentiates than it brought in. The 331st echoed his sentiments, so while it had a fair number of “Big Docs” looking over the pilot’s shoulders, they were only ever brought in to monitor training exercises. During a real action, they’d either be assigned to a field hospital, handed a rifle, or left behind, assigned a mop and bucket, and given instructions to polish every square inch the Burrow—the massive subterranean complex that served as the Division’s primary command center.

The man saluted hastily, “General, we have a problem. Charlie-4’s heart rate has skyrocketed and his brain activity has diminished by—”

General Phrixos leaned over the holotank, letting it illuminate his features. He was a big man who still seemed to have a powerful build though he was now in his late sixties. The craggy lines surrounding his eyes and jaw suggested he hadn’t smiled once in the past thirty or forty years, and the comfortable set of his deep, thoughtful frown made even his rare words of praise seem like a bitter condemnation. When he spoke, his words were dismissive. “He’s just having a panic attack.”

Colonel Tyrone turned and, as there was a junior officer present, stood at attention before speaking. “Sir—with all respect, I trust Lieutenant,” Jaime watched him twist, catching the young soldier’s name patch in the corner of his eye. He continued as though he’d never made a pause, “Brian wouldn’t interrupt our deliberations if it were as simple as that. Please, Lieutenant, continue.”

“He’s having a seizure,” the young Lieutenant was as white as a sheet, his eyes studying something interesting near the toes of his shoes rather than taking a risk meeting the General’s fierce gaze. “Eighty-seven percent probability—”

“Get back to the monitoring station,” Jaime ordered as he jumped forward, abandoning his relaxed posture in an instant to open up a computer terminal hidden along the holotank’s edge. “Get me a direct link to C4’s DI computer—”

“We can do that?” Jaime squeezed his eyes shut at the mystified tone of the young Lieutenant’s voice.

“Nevermind,” Jaime tuned him out, his fingers working furiously as he struggled to pull up the Coyote’s damage diagnostics on a console not designed to do anything of the sort. Time was of the essence and a young pilot’s life was at stake. A string of gibberish letters and numbers flashed past as the entire upload began displaying itself in hexadecimal notation.

Jaime watched it go for a few seconds, scanning for a telltale string. The instant it flashed by he resumed typing, and with the touch of a button sent a string to the burrow’s central diagnostic computer that would report a major positional error with the Coyote’s gyro. The server’s response was instantaneous—convinced that the Coyote was somehow standing at a 230-degree angle, the base computer sent an emergency correction that probably would’ve sent a conscious pilot falling flat on his face. The Coyote tipped forward like a Kurita Mechwarrior bowing before a one-on-one duel and twisting as far as the servos would allow. It wasn’t much, but the resulting position should’ve put the pilot’s command couch nearly level with the ground itself. With any luck, if the pilot vomited he wouldn’t choke to death—the neurohelmet could always be hosed out later.

Yeah, beautiful writing!
And nice shooting, pity it spread out.

Anyway, it's probably time to just grab 1515 and 0519 and leave with more remaining mechs intact (maybe simulate picking up your downed pilots' cockpits as you go without actually doing it). I doubt the Crab will make it back alive with a third piece as it'll need to stay there for two rounds, it might easily not make it even if it leaves right now. Especially since the Watcher will call it when it's severely damaged.

I'm not sure why you think this when I outright said I wasn't going to be an rear end in a top hat with the big objective that required a two-handed Heavy or Assault `Mech to carry, and put it as close as possible to the extraction zone.

I'm also 99% sure I've explicitly said that the dummy prize does not require two hands to carry.

The Locust requires a two-handed Heavy or Assault `Mech to carry.

Edit: I am also going to explicitly say: There is something about the containers holding the real objectives that is not true about the container holding the false objective.

Their objective is to defeat the player `Mechs, not necessarily to protect the objectives. If they can use an objective to lure the players into a bad position they're absolutely going to do just that.

My failure to send in orders this turn was... semi-intentional, I suppose? With the boxes both opened up and me missing my main weapon I wanted to take a bit of time to figure out what I'd be best served doing. I'm already in good cover so I couldn't think of a good place to move. So I just let it go. I perfectly understand PoptartsNinja's frustration however, it's not the first time I've missed a turn this round.

Now that the situation has developed a bit, perhaps I could move and fire upon the Wolverine or Woodsman.

Perhaps asking in the thread like how PTN many other posters have recommended would have been a good idea? And even if you decided not to move, surely an e-mail to PTN saying so would be the polite thing to do?

IMHO you should have moved up to standby to grab an objective if the opportunity presents itself. Hiding while you're so far away accomplishes nothing, your net worth as a damage dealer is negligible. You're only as useful as that hand your mech still has to grab objectives. Anything you grab is something the rest of us doesn't have to tie up our gun arms holding. I could understand if you were close to a few unbroken boxes to hold position and bide your time, but at your current position I have a hard time believing it.

Crab

In any case, planning to move to 0608 to cool down. Will hit the box in 0509 to not waste my shots entirely.

Thoughts for the rest of the team

Shadow Hawk I think you should move to 0212 and aim to grab the objective from 0509 if I reveal something. You should still be able to shoot the Woodsman from there.

Battlemaster Continue to hustle towards the Locust. Potshots at the Woodsman as you go?

The only thing you accomplished by doing this was pissing me off. Congratulations.

Not sending orders is not the same as sending orders to do nothing. If you send orders to do nothing for a turn, at least I know you're doing nothing intentionally. By not sending me orders, you hold up my entire update while I wait to see if you're going to send in anything. I can't do any shooting, any opforce movement, or any fluff until I either have something in my inbox from you or I have decided to cut my losses rather than letting my update (and all of my free time) be held hostage while I wait for you to send me anything at all.

You've been an active participant in this thread JT, so I have to ask: what the hell happened? Did you somehow miss how frustrating it is for me not to receive orders from someone? If your real life is too busy to let you play then loving tell me and I will make concessions. If your life is too busy for BattleTech I understand, we could've passed your turn and then let you play when things were less hectic. I don't even care if you're too drunk to send me valid orders I will accept "too drunk to plan, lol, not doing anything this turn ;) " as valid orders for any machine.

I've now activated an alternate to send orders for your machine until the mission ends. If you miss another set of orders I'm going to have to replace you, and I really don't want to have to do that. :(

Just in case it matters and you forgot, the extra heat from the Plasma Rifle's put you down to 5/8 this turn. I think you can make it to 0608 but just in case it changes anything, figured I'd mention.

If the Shadow Hawk can jump 5 to 0713, that would give the team a C3 spotter 4 hexes from the Woodsman, which I think you guys should probably be directing any shots you make at as well as giving you a +3 move mod from jumping while being in heavy woods. Remember from the last mission- Finishing off an enemy is crucial, don't let that damage you did this turn to the Woodsman go nowhere.

You've still got one of the longest-ranged weapons on your team, the drop to 8 damage hurts but it's not as crippling as you assume. 8 damage every turn is still much better than 0. :shobon:

Dude take it from some who's clinched a match with a no-armed HeraclesHercules literally kicking the poo poo out of other 'mechs, as long as you can move and have a gyro you can do good things just by sponging fire or putting a foot up a 'mechs rear end. Some interesting insights into the brittleness of the Rim World military, at the very least. They field small, covert, elite forces because they literally can't find enough people dumb or desperate enough to put themselves inside a Battlemech.

Is being a mech pilot really that bad compared to the alternatives in the PTNverse?
