They were in the open, the infantry that had taken the kids hostage! Annie didn’t hesitate, let out an inchoate screech and lunged. The cloven feet of her Rifleman smashing between them and their intended destination: the door to one of the out of the way buildings the ‘Lleros had commandeered to house their non-coms. ‘Mech venting heat and steaming like the devil himself, Annie took a bounding leap that stretched her Lil’ Sure Shot to its limits, stomping down on the first infantryman in the line. Her follow-up kick rent armor from her ‘Mech’s leg, but she hardly cared—armor could be repaired, what she was doing?

Broken bodies flew through the air as she put every single ounce of force she could behind the blow. She’d grown up piloting Agro ‘Mechs on her father’s ranch, and putting down an angry, ten-ton Auroch bull native to the trinity worlds took a lot of skill. Doing it with one kick took even more. It was a skill Annie had mastered long ago.

“Holy poo poo,” Divot breathed into the comms, “check out Avengin’ Annie over here!”

She barely noticed when the Blackjack toppled from the roof of the hardened bunker where most of the young children had been staying. Her eyes swept over the broken bodies scattered across field, looking for any signs of movement. Practically daring any of them to still be alive. Bunny Bear demanded retribution for Engine Joe, and Annie meant to see it paid in full.

“… What do we do with this guy? I think he’s out cold.” Divot said, slowing to a stop on legs that looked more skeletal than functional. The overheating Skinwalker raised its right arm, trying to draw a bead. Annie just kicked the Blackjack in the head.

“What guy?” Annie asked in reply.

“Holy poo poo,” Divot repeated again.

After-Action Report:
Hoo-boy, this one was a lot closer than I was expecting. Even at the end, some lucky and/or unlucky rolls could’ve ended the Caballeros. Pretty much everyone but Lil’ Sure Shot is down to paper-thin armor; but the Blackjack just couldn’t pull off a victory. I suppose now you understand why I hate the Blackjack, if it’d been a Grasshopper it’d still be up and irritating the hell out of everyone. Expect to see fewer infantry and vehicles from now on, although I won’t be eliminating them completely—keeping track of four groups of hidden troops and/or minelayers was a bit much for me, even if they didn’t move very often.

We need MVPs again, both for the Caballeros and the Death Commandos; and this time I’m not going to influence the vote at all. By popular demand, Inferno SRMs will get an ‘honorary MVP’ as well. You won’t see them again for a while.

Justice foot (and the mech its attached to) get my MVP vote for consistency, style, comedy and good vengeance.

Capellan MVP goes to the one shooting the hostages. La Dama Muerta dead, all but five women or children murdered, not breaking even as the last shell of a mech desperately staggered to its demise. Their dedication to the Capellan cause even to the point of capture and Caballero vengeance is an example and a proverb.

MvP for the DC:

The Zhukov. He did a ton of torso damage to the Wolverine and the Hunchback and set up their internal damage/death.

MvP for the CC:

Skinwalker. He took an enormous amount of damage and kept coming back again and again. At the end he managed to take out the Vindicator and duo the BJ down. I have not checked but I'm pretty sure he savaged a few tanks/infantry as well.

Honorable mention to the Infernos Rounds and the Justice Foot.

Problems look mighty small from 150 miles up.

It's hard to decided between Justice Foot and Skinwalker for MVP - the Foot was the Foot, but Skinwalker made some pretty vital moves early on to keep the Capellans bunched up together. I guess I'd have to go with Skinwalker in the end though.

The non-MVP on the DC side is definitely the Enforcer though - he had a perfect shot lined up on an ejected Caballero floating on the breeze, and completely blew it. Way to let down the bad guys :colbert:

So now for the anxious wait to see what the Capellans were *really* up to.

Justice Foot is now an honorary MVP, like the Inferno SRMs. If the Capellans get a piece of equipment as a pseudo-MVP, so do the Caballeros.

Tempest_56
Mar 14, 2009

Player MVP has to be Bunny and the Justice Foot.

For the defenders? I have to say it was the SRM infantry. Their use of the Infernos is what made things so tough - it directly led to Engine Joe's death and crippled the Hunchback for two crucial turns, as well as soaking up a lot more time and effort than anything else. They were a great speedbump.

Caballeros are actually looking pretty good on the equipment front now. Shame about the women and children though!

Guys, find a woman who looks at you the way GhostStalker looks at every bald, obese, single 58 year old accountant from Tulsa who managed to win $4,000 by not wagering on a Final Jeopardy triple stumper.

Finally caught up with this thread, and it seems like just in time too, seeing as how the end of the mission was just posted. MVP for the Goons has to be Skinwalker, after the Justice Foot got an honorable MVP. Gonna have to go with the Zhukov for the Death Commandos.

Seems to be a pretty Pyrrhic victory for the Caballeros, though. 3/4 of the hostages dead, all women and children, including the wife of the CO. It remains to see whether or not the son survived as well... Also, RIP Engine Joe. You will be missed. Most of the remaining mechs are in pretty bad shape, but it's almost all armor damage and that can be repaired...

Wonder which of the salvaged mechs Clueless will get to replace his family heirloom Hunchback. Guess he has a new one now, huh?

Waiting to see the repercussions of this battle, the state of the Sphere, how far the Clans have gotten, and the choice of next theater. Probably gonna vote Lyrans for the next theater... Wanna see some protagonist Capellans and Combine eventually, though. Maybe after the Lyrans are done, I guess. Will probably be fun watching the goons be the ones running the Death Commandos, after all. Other forces would work too, though.

Echoing the Skinwalker and Zhukov love.

Really tempted to go Lil' Sure Shot on the Mexigoon side, but it's biggest move of the fight (legging the Cataphract) came from a really lucky shot. That Wolverine, on the other hand, was a veritable zombie, and managed to keep fighting long after I felt it was pretty much considered out of the fight.

At least Avengin' Annie earned her nickname, and then some. :black101:

Hi, I'm Troy McClure! You might remember SD from such films as "Guys, I'm not sanguine about this Mech choice", "The Millstone of the Clans", and "Uppity Sperglord ilKhan"! Make sure to clear the date for his upcoming documentary, "How I ran a Star of Clan Mechs into the ground!"
Caballeros MVP: The Rifleman. How the hell often does a Rifleman storm through a battle like an indestructible master of war, gunning down the filth and justice footing everything in sight?

Caballeros Equipment VIP: The Justice Foot. That 'mech's right leg should be clad in bright yellow slat armor with rust-brown underpinnings and painted with blood spatter, Dead Space style.

Capellan MVP: Baby-killers don't get MVPs. They get stood up against a wall and executed by firing squad. 'Mech firing squad! So the Capellan MVP is the brave wall that gave its existence to serve as firing squad backstop.

Political Vote 2:

Justin Xiang-Allard’s cold, steel hand slammed down on the holotank causing the report one of his subordinates had just delivered to freeze and stutter. The operative who’d made the recording twitched as the audio feed was interrupted, rewound, attempted to play and skipped; repeating in an infinite half-second loop. Justin thought he looked like he was in incredible pain, and vowed to make that the new reality.

His plan had been executed perfectly: the Caballero dependents had been harried without loss, and the primary defenders pulled from the temporary repair facilities the Free Worlders had constructed. Which is where the entire plan had gone awry.

Justin smashed his fist into the holotank again, then took a step back; wrenching his hand up and away from his forearm, he let loose at the tank with a bolt of light from the laser rifle that had been built into his artificial limb. He scowled at the smoking remnants of the holotank… he’d never been a violent man, back in the Federated Suns.

His mind whirled, mulling over the possibilities—either someone in the Death Commandos had disobeyed orders, a spy had altered them, or someone had countermanded them. The former was unlikely, and Justin was certain that Hanse Davion hadn’t yet been able to replace Aleksei. No, someone had countered his orders—and there was only one man he knew with the authority to do so.

Soft arms wrapped around his shoulders, fingertips tracing the curve of his scowling lips. “My love, you’re beautiful when you’re angry,” Romano Liao cooed quietly. Justin turned, his angry eyes locking with hers—and he felt the worst of his anger melt away.

“Your father is interfering with our operations again,” he growled in irritation.

Romano’s lips brushed his cheek, “They were just mercenaries,” she cooed, and Justin crushed a surge of irritation.

“They could have been bought,” he explained quietly. “Now, they’ll be our enemies forever. When Hanse Davion—”

She sighed, “You obsess with him.”

“He plots our downfall,” Justin countered. “He’s biding his time; he still wants revenge for Operation Doppleganger.”

Romano frowned, and looked away. “I had thought House Kurita—”

“Takashi has bigger problems than the likes of Hanse Davion, it seems,” Justin sighed quietly, then finally swept Romano into his arms. They kissed with a quiet intensity, and parted only reluctantly. “Hanse will turn on us as soon as he has the chance. After the beating he’s been giving Takashi’s samurai, Duke Hasek will give his blessing. The Caballeros could have been hired—now, they’ll only hire on to oppose us.”

“You think so little of our chances?” Romano caressed his prosthetic arm, her slim figure pressed tight against him. “You think so little of your own abilities? If the Fox attacks, we shall deal with him as we always have.”

“By losing a half-dozen worlds to him?” Justin countered viciously. “Your father—”

“—could be replaced,” she reminded him in conspiratorial tones. It was an act she’d suggested before, coached in jest lest Maximilian learn of her ambitions. He’d never been as sorely tempted to take her up on the offer as he was now: Maximilian was playing with fire and if he wasn’t likely he’d galvanize the Free Worlds League and undo all the careful gains Justin had orchestrated thus far; and all because he felt left out of the planning process.

“… It would be easier to win this war without his interference,” Justin admitted quietly. That admission would have been enough to see him executed in any other company. Romano Liao smiled that vicious, happy little smile that made Justin question whether she’d be any better replacement. He wasn’t sure what, precisely, needed to be done—but he knew he needed to make a choice.

Political Vote 2
Does Justin Xiang-Allard:

A) Support Romano Liao’s ambitions and have Maximilian Liao assassinated?

B) Support Romano Liao’s ambitions and manufacture proof of Maximilian Liao’s senility?

C) Wait and see if conditions improve/worsen?

D) Tolerate Maximilian Liao’s interference and continue to attempt to win the war without the Chancellor’s aid?

E) Risk death by bringing his concerns to the Chancellor’s attention, then salvage the situation by trying to give Maximilian Liao a more active role in the battle planning?

Jaxxon: Still not the stupidest thing from the expanded universe.

Obviously, B. Simply put, it ensured the old man gets a nice pension, and you can call on him from time to time for tactical advice

Plus, narritively, it means that he could lead a rebellion to regain control someday. Nice narritive hook for a civil war

If I die before I Wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.
A. A CC with a loyal Justin is a scary scary thought. I like it. Although the thought of him being Romano's right hand is rather unnerving.

I'm going to vote E, because it's most likely to get Justin Xiang-Allard executed, thus furthering the agenda of The Fox.

Since E has precisely zero chance of winning, I changed my vote later on to A, presuming that's allowed. If not, well... It's here as an E, I suppose.

"You treat her like a lady... and she'll always bring you home."
Item one: Justin Xiang-Allard loving owns, and is awesome.

Item two: The next time we see the Capellans, we'll probably be playing as them.

Item three: Justin Xiang-Allard loving owns, and is awesome.

Item four: Justin Xiang-Allard in effective control of the Capellan Commonwealth loving owns more than I want to think about right now.

Item five: Killing Maxi means that Romano is undisputed leader. Not killing Maxi means Justin can play Romano and Maxi off against each other to keep the balance of power for himself- it's a tricky balancing act, but I have faith in Justin.

Conclusion: Option B. It gives us the best chance of having a solid, resurgent CC under the most competent leadership. And I want everyone to be as competent as possible, because that makes for the most interesting stories.
