Rise of the Phoenix: Tactical Update 4

Daryl Su Wong’s Thunderbolt took another three steps before it fell. Its broad battle fists opened and closed like claws as though it meant to grab the jade-green enemy Warhammer and drag it along to hell. There was nothing left of the mangled ruin that had once been the BattleMech’s cockpit. It didn’t even smoke, the electric-blue bolt of charged particles from the golden Warhammer’s PPC had devoured everything. There was nothing left to burn.

In Staff Sergeant Rory Almeier’s experience a blow like that was enough to leave a `Mech cursed, even after the machine had been fully repaired. When the meat died suddenly, without enough time realize the grim reaper had come calling, it always left an indelible mark on the metal. It was as though some small part of the pilot lingered in a BattleMech’s neural uplinks. When it was eventually recovered, he expected the technicians would take months to fix the ‘glitch’ that would cause the Thunderbolt’s hands to open and close with no input from the pilot. Daryl’s last impulse to grab and hold the enemy would be reduced to a ‘persistent coding error’ or a ‘faulty fuse’ and when the Thunderbolt claimed another pilot it would, of course, be pilot error.

Rory didn’t think himself a superstitious man, but at some level all MechWarriors were. He’d seen it happen before and expected he’d see it happen again. And again. And again. Pilots left a mark on their machines, and it was always the little things that left a machine feeling off in a way a pilot couldn’t explain and the technicians could never quite fix.

****************************************

“Advance, and focus your fire on that Marauder,” Jeana Clay ordered, her bulky BattleMaster quick enough to put ‘the Red Corsair’ in the fore. Caesar fell in behind without a word, his King Cobra dwarfing the smaller Assault `Mech.

“Aff,” saKhan Dusk Moffat grumbled. The decision to focus fire rankled, but she was here to learn how the warriors of Skye did battle, and she’d given her word to follow Jeana’s orders in the field. The enemy Marauder’s silhouette was vastly different than she’d expected. It was an interesting modification, with an altered armor layout and a slender profile. The lack of shoulder-mounted autocannon had thrown her at first, but her DI computer still called it a 98% match with the Star League Marauders she was familiar with.

Something about the enemy design made her nervous in a way she couldn’t quite explain. The Marauder, the Warhammer, the Mercury, and Stefan Amaris’s Dragoon had been some of the machines that had inspired the development OmniMech after all. No matter how the Capellans had modified this one it would undoubtedly be a machine worthy of her respect. She fired dutifully, but longed to engage the machine in single combat. She was curious how long it would hold up to her heavy lasers. Not long, likely, but long enough to—

Her train of thought was interrupted as an azure mass launched itself at Jeana’s BattleMaster. A Shadow Hawk, Dusk realized in surprise. The profile was unmistakable even if the armor configuration had been drastically altered. It struck the BattleMaster in the chest at high speed, its legs flexing as it delivered a creditable dropkick that knocked the crimson machine sprawling into one of the runoff streams feeding the small alkali lake they’d deployed next to. Amazingly, as the Shadow Hawk tumbled head over heels, the enemy pilot managed to bring it down on its wedge-shaped feet. As a warrior of Clan Steel Viper, Dusk had long-since overcome her disdain of close combat, but even she couldn’t help but feel a hint of admiration for that enemy pilot.

Death from Above was difficult enough to pull off, but that had been a work of art.

If it weren't for the headcap that would've been a decent exchange on damage for the turn, although that DFA is also a big problem and recovering from it while the Capellan rearguard continues to surround the Corsairs means they've pretty much done their job of delaying the relief group - who are all the more needed because drat, down one Crusader already! Apart from that loss the Mariks are holding their own, thank goodness they got one Warhammer but a lot is going to depend on next turn's crazy canyon knife-fight.

Can anyone give a better sense of how that brawl will go down? The Pillager being an Ace means they might be getting it from both sides.

And might now be a good time for the Guillotine to avenge the Thunderbolt by backshotting that Warhammer to oblivion?

I'm not sure how the Pillager is an Ace here, it's on network Tian with the two Marauders, but all three are listed as Aces. One of them needs to be the hub, right?

First off, R.I.P. Pooncha.

Secondly, his death might have bought something big. Carlos and his two closest bodyguards have a decently clear breakthrough path now. That one WHM is mission killed, and while there's still ACEs on that side only the Pillager is actually in the way right now. At worst it'll be 3v2 against the Pillager and the green MAD this turn, and then possibly a clean run south.

Corsair+Clans is also in a good situation, even with the knockdown from the DFA. 5v4 in favor, with the engagement being at knife-fighting range now. If they can take out the MAD-X1O Lu Bu, they can dominate that part of the field even with the Shadow Hawks hopping. Said MAD will do a lot of damage in close - make sure it only gets one turn to be in close and you'll be in great shape.

It depends on a few things, but there are a couple spots where the Grand Titan, Rampage, and Gallowglas can set up very nicely - such that ether only one will have shots this coming turn, or if both do then they'll be set up for multiple physicals on the MAD. There are ways to play it sneaky. It might give the WHM more room to catch up, but one of the bodyguards can always body-block in that instance to give Carlos an extra turn to make some space. Alternately if the Corsairs can kick in the southern flank it might not matter anyways.

The green marauder moved, so presumably it isn't an ace this turn. That means the pillager is ready to come down on the Crusaders from the other side. The other marauder miiight not be able to contribute to the attack on Carlos this turn but he can keep the Guillotine from being too comfortable while blasting the Warhammer in the back.

Edit: VVVV Whoops, you're right. Then yeah, seems something's off there. And the ambush got a bit worse, too.

The green marauder didn't move yet, but there are two hubs listed on the Diyu network right now and zero on Tian, so I suspect there is just a copy/paste error on who is part of which network.

Basically I think Golden Boy and Zhang Fei are crossed.

This might sound crazy, but the Rampage and I could turn and go to 1908 and 2007 and face down Golden Boy while effectively blocking the green Marauder's movement, making him either choose to stay put and take shots at us with no movement mod, or go somewhere else. The Pillager would not be able to get to a position to backshoot us, either. We'd need contingency firing orders in case he chose to stay put, but I'm not seeing any great options for myself heading in a different direction. The Marauder can get behind me pretty much anywhere else I go.

This is just at first glance, maybe I'll see something else later.

EDIT: Golden Boy moved, the green Marauder did not. He's still ACE.

Also, Pooncha...see you, Space Cowboy.

Alternately if the Corsairs can kick in the southern flank it might not matter anyways.

Is the plan really for Carlos to book it south to the Corsairs while his lance plays rearguard, more than the Corsairs breaking through? Because that Titan seems better suited to holding out than running away. If the Corsairs get distracted chasing and fighting the southern Capellans I don't think they'll make it in time to bail Carlos out.

e: I super can't wait to see that assault mace in action.

I gotta say, if we're seeing that mace come into play either the relief force has had to come way too far north or we've done a bad job of holding back the pursuit as Carlos' Crusaders haul rear end. I know it's tempting but we don't want to be overextending just to show off.

Carlos doesn't have to book it per se, but regardless breaking through to the South and getting away from the two mechs in the NW/not being pincered so bad is ideal. From there if even one or two of the Corsairs are able to break through - which should happen as early as this coming turn if they can wipe both the MAD and WHM down there - he should be more than fine, and the bodyguards might be able to come along for the ride.

I'd be surprised if we don't see it this turn, considering Caesar can get behind the Marauder down there...

It looks like Caeser get behind that Marauder. Since he'd be facing NE, would he still be able to hit it with his mace?

He is still almost definitely not a spy

I'm not sure how the Pillager is an Ace here, it's on network Tian with the two Marauders, but all three are listed as Aces. One of them needs to be the hub, right?

The 3 `Mechs in the same image are in the same group. I forgot to change the name of the network but the Golden Boy is now the hub for the Pillager.

Another option would be for the 3 of us to set up in 2408, 2308, and 2407 and force the Pillager and Marauder to come to us while denying Golden Boy any shots.

The Grand Titan is definitely not built for quick getaways.

EDIT: Nevermind, the Marauder can get behind us in that scenario.

I think that if Caesar ends up in 0927 facing north he can torso twist to threaten melee on Lu Bu, since the mace is in the right arm. Someone else should confirm, though.

He'd be able to torso twist to SE, so...probably.

It might be better for the WVR to go there and for Caesar to hit the MAD from a different spot, but there are a lot of options for Caesar to mace either the MAD or the WHM this turn and that's going to be fun.
