Bethany sneered as her target fell before she could bring her autocannons to bear. It was almost pathetic. The Clans were supposed to be the deadliest threat the Inner Sphere had ever faced, and yet the Snow Ravens had lost nearly a full star to the desultory maneuverings of a band of rag-tag mercenaries. If the Snow Ravens were fighting this poorly across their entire ground theater the Sea Foxes would have to fight twice as hard to carry all the dead weight. Her radio crackled, Fox Flight yet again. The aerial battle wasn’t going the Amaris descendant’s way.

“Fox leader to Demon Hawks, we were going to come around for another pass but you’ve stepped into a real hornet’s nest over there. There’s a full squadron of fighters moving straight towards you’re Ay Oh Oh. I don’t know if that wing-pair you drove off is going to circle around—they’re still on a ballistic trajectory and slowing, you may have gotten one of the pilots—but we’re not equipped for air-to-air work. We’ve already called Central and I’m told a squadron of Interceptors is on the way, but you’re on your own until they arrive. We’re heading back to repair and rearm—good luck, Demon Hawks. We’ll buy you a drink later when you bring that convoy in safe. Fox leader out.”

There was a hiss of static as the Rim Worlder cut the connection. They were undoubtedly burning towards their airfield as quickly as their heavy fighters could manage. That was probably for the best, if they’d stuck around against more than double their number they’d have accomplished nothing save feeding a couple of easy kills to the Snow Ravens. Bethany twisted, her dark eyes scanning the horizon for the incoming fighter squadron.

“Two fighters coming in, almost dead South,” Melanie van Daal’s thin Lyran accent bore just a hint of the aristocratic. Her haughty attitude and distant connection to the Richvale’s notorious van Daal family had been enough to see her fired from no less than three other mercenary commands. Called “Baroness” behind her back, she’d leapt at the opportunity to serve under a “real Lyran field commander” and had bullied her way into the lighter, faster Hawk lance even though her machine’s performance put it squarely in the same underwhelming column as Bethany’s own.

She suspected Jason and Duncan hoped to form a third lance of faster medium and heavy `Mechs, likely consisting of Takashi “the Scorpion,” “Smith” Jud Malouf, Barna Roland, and “Ronin,” with the Baroness shuffled into Duncan’s lance while Jason kept only the two Locusts and Yul Liao’s Po as their scouting element, but until one of them showed a little initiative the Demon Hawks were running two oversized and badly-coordinated lances instead.

“I recognize those,” Jason’s calm voice snapped Bethany out of her reverie. “The Steel Vipers used them a lot during the invasion—be careful, they’re murderous in a strafing run. Sergeant Rostov, your transports are going to be too good for them to pass up. I suggest you scatter.”

“Understood sir,” the aging driver grunted. “You heard the `Mech jock, everyone off the road and keep those guns skyward! Maybe a few tracers will make one of `em flinch.”

“There’s a couple of drop shuttles coming in behind us,” Lt. Delwyn, their liaison announced. When most other eyes had been on the approaching light fighters, he’d turned to watch their rear. “We can probably ignore them. They’re just a distraction, trying to get us to turn our backs on the real threat.”

Bethany’s eyes scanned her rear display. A pair of wedge-shaped craft were just barely visible, slowly orbiting one another in a lazy spiral, a slower maneuver than the similar, much tighter spiral the smaller fighters were using. Their forms would blur together on sensors, making both difficult to target and giving deceptive mass-shadow, heat, and magnetic readings. The maneuver would’ve made any shuttle pilot proud, their machines were barely aerodynamic pigs.

“No,” Bethany broadcast, a part of her mind dispassionately hoping the transmission would lend a trace of panic to her voice, “those aren’t shuttles! The fighters up front are the distraction! We need all guns behind us, now!”

Oh my god this is beautiful.

Elemental drops, Aerospace assaults, and the Revenants eating something that both out-BVs and out-masses both of them. You're in pretty good shape right now, though, having straight-up murdered one star and the big guns of another.

The Locust needs to stand and get out of the Elemental killzone right now, though. It's fairly fortunate that it can only be swarmed/legged if the Elementals end their movement in its hex. ACE Elementals are dangerous, but just remember to stay four hexes away from their position and they can't swarm/leg you. And you do have the Komodo, which is specifically designed to murder Elementals.

The trick with the Kirghiz is that if they're doing any attacks on you they're burning altitude, and one failed control roll turns that 100 ton flying brick into a lawn ornament at low altitudes-and they're not invulnerable to 10 point whacks anywhere.

Am I allowed to be jealous of warhawk? It's basically my mech but better in almost every way. About the only thing I got going for me is that I am basically heat neutral.

edit: also apparently I'm bad at ranges... I thought I was 5 away from the kit fox not 4. well, streaks missed either way.
