The crossbow is just so darn much FUN to plan for. Be a long range crit seeker? Why limit yourself to long range, friend? Why not run into someone's face and do lots of damage? Oh, and still cluster roll for finding those crits.

Oh good, Plasma Cannon usefulness has been discovered! Tag a heavy energy boat with one and watch them actually have to make decisions on whether or not to fire everything!

The Plasma Cannon's one of the most useful tools in your arsenal, even with the cold.

Just remember: if you do enough damage to something it's probably going to suicide alpha to try to take someone with it. Having good move mods (by jumping or long stretches of straight line movement), watching your heat, and exploiting the enemy's range brackets can really help prevent those from accomplishing much.

The Plasma Cannon makes a suicide alpha much less attractive since they're probably going to shut down for trying it, which takes them from 'probably boned next turn' to '100% boned next turn' since the Pouncer can just targeting computer pop 'em in the head for a tiny little +1 to-hit modifier.

Edit: I've also reviewed the charge rules and they can indeed be made across level changes with no loss of damage. That used to not be the case (it was possible but an elevation change or a turn would reset your charge damage). Now all the game cares about is how many hexes you've moved through which is a very nice improvement to a niche physical attack.

Does the widowmakers, since they have a base here and all, have a search and rescue protocol and all? The players basically say "Ride your mech down and pray." But I would assume they would have a more established system.

There are 2 ways to get out of that after pissing someone off. Die or fight a trial against whoever put you in it for their mech and/or rank.

Get in winter gear, pop canopy, pick them up and drop them in, close canopy, awkward shuffling by two people in thick winter gear to get the canopy to actually close, get out of winter gear, scrape ice off the monitors and control panels, go home.

Likely. There's also the matter of the mech battle happening at the moment, and that the person she needs to rescue is currently underwater in a freezing river.

Every battlefield in Battletech is somewhere near an active volcano. Just how near (and how active) is often a matter of severity of the situation.

-60*C is -76*F

Just a bit of a difference.

Entirely survivable and the Clans do have really good survival equipment. They just typically expect Warriors to rescue themselves and/or find ways to survive until they can be recovered after the fight.

Edit: Ejecting here is still suicide.

How 'bout the functional mech underwater? Presumably it's mission-killed since once the river re-freezes and entombs it in ice it's no longer capable of extricating itself, but the mech itself should remain operational, so the pilot would presumably be just fine until the recovery teams from whichever side won the battle come to dig him out.

What's the protocol for surrendering in those circumstances? Suicide?

Assuming it's not crushed by the rapidly expanding ice that just happens to find the ceramic-metal armor the perfect surface to dump the last of its heat-energy into? The Widowmakers either figure out some way to get it out or forget about it completely if they lose badly enough that none of their survivors remember seeing what happened to the Star Colonel.

That pilot is functionally dead unless they win this battle.

Ikuta Glacier: Tactical Update 3

Chaya’s face twisted into a grim scowl as her lasers bracketed the Summoner without touching it. Her shots had been hasty, admittedly, but missing completely was still a disappointment. It was her first real battle, and the Nova Captain had assigned her to a `Mech that should have spelled easy kills for even a rookie, and yet the closest she’d come to actually striking her target had been when one of her large pulse lasers had sent up a small cloud of steam and drawn a line in the snow between her `Mech and the Widowmaker.

The Summoner twisted in place, its right arm extending. It returned fire with only a single laser of its own, mirroring her own attack to draw a line in the snow. Apparently it’d thought her over-eager inaccuracy was a challenge to personal combat under the rules of Zell. She switched over to the Nova’s encrypted frequency.

“Nova Captain, the Summoner is challenging me. I shall lure it out of position, it should make for an easy back-shot quiaff?”

“Be cautious, Chaya,” August admonished. “If you wish an honorable duel we will support you and strike as you ask for it but remember that we do not hate the Widowmakers because they are stupid. That pilot has undoubtedly suggested the same thing. Maneuver carefully.”

Special Rules
Necrosia Stimulants Once per game, BattleMechs and Elementals may inject themselves with Necrosia stimulants granting them heightened reaction times for three turns. While Necrosia stimulants are active, Mechwarriors gain a -1 bonus to gunnery due to their heightened reaction times but suffer a +1 penalty to piloting tests due to minor visual hallucinations. Elementals in Ironhold Armor gain a -1 bonus to gunnery with no penalties. All other Elementals instead gain a -2 bonus to Anti-Mech attacks with no penalties. Icy Conditions Ice hexes are in play. At the bottom of the ravine, all ice hexes are treated as though they are elevation -6. It is possible to break through these ice hexes and fall into the liquid water below. If a `Mech does not extract itself from the water in two turns it will be frozen in place and immobilized (or destroyed if completely submerged).

Do we not get credit for killing Vickers until next turn because he turned into a chumpsicle in the next movement phase, I assume? Or is it that the glacier got a kill steal?
