Are those monitors mounting AC20s as their AA guns? Because that's awesome. Proper heavy flak.

They are significantly smaller than destroyer escorts. They're PT boats size, maybe a bit bigger.

Destroyers and other blue navy vessels in BattleTech are typically multi-hex support vehicles.

Yep, the regular displacement boats are basically PT boats of up to 300 tons. The Monitors seen here are only 75 tons.

If these were destroyers they'd be packing several Long Toms.

Full on Long Toms, too, none of this artillery cannon poo poo. Probably end up with two batteries of turreted Long Toms in the front and rear hex, and the mid hex have two turreted Long Toms per broadside. Or maybe Snipers, to represent 5 inch cannons, rather than heavy cruiser cannon.

I'm thinking about going to 1533 and shooting the the summoner - or take a potshot at the purple donar.
And I didn't expect to say it, but if I go after the summoner, maybe I should hold fire with the AC. On one hand, it's a to-8 shot ; on the other hand, I don't think I'm going to see the white of his eyes, so.

You and me both buddy. :)

Again, not to jinx it; if the dice cooperates for two more turn, we'll have downed all the helos, which should complete both primaries (we don't have enough coverage up North, unless the rest of the Monitors fill the skies with AC/20 slugs), while the entire 'Sword of Davion' is still intact (more or less)

Pending Orders

'Sag' will turn to face 1618, and fire x2 LPL, x2 MPL, and the SPL at the Donar MSH #3 in 1515.

What the HELL? That's my cutting board.

So, Battlemaster options for the next turn. Unfortunately we've gotten themselves boxed in between the Donars, so there are three options for next turn. Well four, but "Charge Donar and swing sword" is always option 3.

1) Back up one, unload on Purple Donar. This still leaves me open to getting shot in the back from the other Donar.

2) Accept fate, move to 1629 and unload on the Summoner in the hopes of a golden BB.

3) Back up, unload on Purple Donar, hope that I get a lucky dice roll.

Thoughts?

I would say keep playing the Primary Objective, i.e., keep downing the helos.

If you're concerned about receiving rear-shots, you could turn to face the summoner, then you can torso twist to engage the Donar(s).

"Now, see, now you see the coaching aspect of things come into play here again. The defense went into a coverage scheme with a lot of defensive backs, which is what they needed to do. But the offense has some patient, accurate passers on the field, guys who can really make some plays and put points on the board. And these Donars, you know, they're some of the fastest players in the National Football League, but matched up against really big receivers or a tight end, they're not gonna make that tackle every time."

"Ordinarily, as a coach, I'd be more worried about some of the guys on the offense who are looking gassed out there, but it seems to me like they're all playing it safe and changing up their blocking schemes to deal with the new package. You know, the Naginata, the Sagittare, the Mauler, they're not looking too good right now, but they're toughing it out. Sometimes in a big game, even though you'd rather spell guys for a series or two, these star player kind of guys aren't gonna tell you how hurt they are and they're gonna keep playing. You really have to respect that kind of grit."

"One thing to watch out for is that with the offense going for the heavy kind of formation here, bringing in those Roughnecks, now they can pick up the safety blitz from the Summoner real easy. If they can take him out of the play that is a huge win for the offense."

"The other thing to watch is how the Battlemaster and Jagermech move. If they go for easy shots, they're gonna take some back. But if they step up in the pocket, or roll out into the flats, there's spots where they can avoid any incoming fire from those Donars, or at least make the Donars have a real tough time getting hits. The Donars have great speed, but the agility is sometimes a problem, you know, the lateral movement in coverage. So getting into a side arc where they can't hit back, making a move to freeze them, that kind of thing - it could be a real huge play for those two right now."

Sorry I'm late to the party again. Looks like I didn't do a ton of actual damage to the Summoner but I did manage to ping his computer which makes him much less dangerous. I think I'll probably want to keep the pressure on him and maybe try to get him between me and the Roughnecks. I'm thinking I'll walk down to 1131 to build up at least a +1 mod and fire on the Summoner from there.

Just throwing this out there, but are only four Monitors moving because the others are waiting for space, or did only four move because the Mauler went back out of line of sight of the towers and the rest aren't manned yet?

RA Rx

If everyone stays outside/in cover or leaves the Summoner's Large Laser short range it'll need 8+movement to hit any player with its four weapons (and if the Naginata stays out of LoS that's probably 9-10), which would allow focusing down the two remaining Donars.
The Summoner might just torso twist to fire its four arm-lasers on Roberts at 6 and 8.

Korean Roberts and Haruka (the green and southern yellow Roughnecks) have half-decent shots on the orange Donar with each their main gun (8 LBx -3 and no +1 aircraft bonus) and 9 (Haruka walked, is in short range)), but probably not enough to kill it.

Next round the Roughnecks will be more of a threat to the Summoner, and probably get ambushed by the Stone Rhino. Have they even noticed it? :v:
Less of a problem than it shooting on blue forces or Luthien AW... They seem a bit feral, as someone said, they're probably planning to open the dropship for weapons primarily, not save anyone inside.

I really do appreciate it. I wish I could do the gimmick more often but after a certain point you run out of Madden jokes...

That being said if it helps translate Battletech into something more intelligible for some people then I'm glad to do it. And weirdly there are some things, particularly from the first time I did the Madden gimmick, that are applicable to both Battletech and football. Speed is king a lot of the time, pick plays/blocks are sneakily useful in ways that don't exist in a lot of tabletop games (as demonstrated in the first Luthien mission), getting an opposing unit turned around can sometimes be key, etc. You can even visualize opposing units' sweet spots in terms of weapon ranges the same way you might visualize areas for zone coverage, the same way I've been narrating the Stone Rhino as an ILB/MLB in coverage over the middle.

And so you might do a slant route on the outside of that radius, moving a unit just outside the sweet spot to plink at it with superior movement/range modifiers; or you might visualize a fast unit running straight at it trying to burn it and get into a side or rear arc; or you could visualize another 'mech with long-range weapons backing up and firing the same way you do a QB doing a five or even seven-step drop and working through their looks.

Ultimately, Battletech often comes down to just moving in a way that tilts the modifiers as much in your favor as possible, but the way that manifests in terms of actual movement can look football-ish more than it seems like it should.

Besides, you know I've been a big fan of Madden Mode since those Solaris matches years and years ago.

This deserves additional comment, as I think its a lot closer to 'reality' then one might realize.

Nominal 'players' will have 'nominal' effective ranges and 'reach', think of it as short range in BTech. Better players will have extended ranges and reach, i.e., a more 'talented' QB can throw farther with the same accuracy, a 'better' full back can cover a wider zone with the same effectiveness, etc.

So, in that sense, Clan Tech is akin to playing against a team of All-Stars; they can do things that your 'average' guy simply can't replicate. Doesn't mean they're unbeatable, you just have to make sure they play the game 'your way'.

In any case, in both BTech and Real-Life Sports, understanding the capabilities of your 'players' so that your side will have a higher 'Completion Percentage' is how you win games.

Konpei Island Update 14

Sumiko’s head pounded with the thunderous pressure of her own beating heart. Seconds stretched into hours as she waited for each life-affirming beat. Colors, vague and shapeless, swirled through her vision. The long, slender serpents writhing and slithering in front of her slowly resolved themselves to be her arms, hanging numbly from the restraint straps, a scant few centimeters from touching the armored Transplex canopy of her Hatamoto-Chi. She barely felt where the command couch’s restraints dug into her hips and shoulders, she was too fascinated watching a bead of sweat roll down her right arm and into the sweatband of her leather piloting glove.

She couldn’t remember where she’d gotten that glove, or why, but she knew it was important. A sweaty palm could slip on a control at a crucial instant, but a properly-fitted glove would never have that problem. A familiar fog welled up in front of her but it took her several seconds to remember she could move her arms, and longer still to reach up and open the visor on her NeuroHelmet. With the cockpit’s life support systems offline, her own breath had been enough to steam up the inside of her helmet. Now if only she could figure out why she couldn’t turn her head.

She’d been fighting, that much she remembered. The particulars eluded her, but the view through the cockpit glass was little help. A flat expanse of ferrocrete was all that awaited her, featureless save for some white reflective lines painted on to aid navigation. The distant rumble of Thunder convinced her it would be best to stay where she was for the time being, none of the cockpit controls responded to her desultory efforts to convince her BattleMech to stand up. Even the damage diagnostic monitors refused to power up, but what that meant exactly was presently beyond her comprehension.

I can't make this stuff up. Sometimes it's just too unbelievable, haha.

I know I haven't finished the Lets Read of the Dark Age book (ugh), but I'm going to Lets Read the first Caballeros novel. I'm going to be putting the money I take in on Patreon this month toward Hurricane Relief charities (as well as as much of my own income as I can budget), so if it encourages even one other person to donate to charity it's worth it.
