Death before dishonor?
Your terms are accepted.

Maybe, but tanks are almost always seen as being substantially inferior to 'mechs in-universe. It'd probably end up looking like "LOKI got bitch-slapped by terrorists, the Home Guard lost a brave tank crew in the fighting, but our amazing mechwarriors saved the day!" If nothing else, it looks a lot less suspicious if they at least have some kind of damage to deal with.

What would happen if, by some strange twist of luck, that Javelin managed to get close to a Locust and then blown up by a Home Guard unit, taking the Locust out in the process? Would that be a good or a bad thing? For the Home Guard, I mean. Dying for the mission and embarrassing LOKI without unwanted collateral damage would be a positive outcome in any other situation.

That would indeed be awesome and a fitting end for that LOKI Locust.

Also, I very much doubt that you guys will be able to scratch the Von Luckner tank, though I guess you're free to try it if you feel lucky. The orders do say to avoid damage to Home Guard Mechs only, but good luck trying to take out that tank successfully. I guess giving it some battle scars and damage might not be that bad of an idea, makes it look like you weren't just going to run into the guns of the Home Guard or something like that.

I'm still hoping for someone to

and/or

2. Blow up the train!

And so on. Man I am loving this new phase already. Let's just hope they take some Home Guard mechs with them just to make this interesting.

Edit: vvv Yes, that is why I'm advocating it. Playing the wild card and doing something crazy is totally in line with the scenarios we've played so far.

Not to mention I like anything that causes strife in the IS. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll just be stomping off in this Timber Wolf.

Don't the new orders specifically say to avoid damage to Home Guard Mechs? Don't think we want this to happen... The Loki Mechs, however, those are fair game. Wreck that drat Locust already! It's already got one foot (literally) in the junkyard. Another couple of good hits should be able to finish it off.

End Phase:

Rain rubbed her forehead through the tiny triangular porthole in her neurohelmet, then flipped the armored safety-glass back down. She checked her radar, checked her maps, then smiled as a plan coagulated in her mind. She’d jump out, setting the fuel tanks aflame—if they were as full as the one she’d smashed through, the explosion shouldn’t be huge. She’d come down on the other side of the refinery and let the building itself shield her from the blast; then use her weapons to take apart whatever the explosion didn’t destroy.

She kicked down hard on her foot pedals, and her ‘Mech’s jump jets kicked in. Sailing into the air on superheated plasma; the vaporous fumes from the spilled fuel oil caught flame almost instantly. A wave of heat flared up behind her, and Rain risked a glance at the rear quarter of her circle-vision strip. The glare was intense as the vaporized fuel went up.

Her first inkling that something was wrong came as the heat in her ‘Mech’s cockpit continued to spike; but it was only when the tongues of orange flame licked past her cockpit glass that she realized her Valkyrie had been doused in gasoline! Cursing, she tried a quick mid-air pirouette to try to douse the flames. It was a spin most expert ‘Mechwarriors would’ve been proud of, but it succeeded only in scattering droplets of flaming gasoline throughout the refinery.

Fighting a wave of nausea brought on by the intense heat, Rain brought her ‘Mech in line with her intended landing zone. Her plan was still sound—touch down safely and let the fires burn themselves out, then she could—

Only a third full and engulfed in flames, the refinery’s other fuel tanks ruptured as the gasoline within started to boil. The instant the fumes were exposed to open flame, the entire refinery went up like a massive bomb; the normal safety measures—the floating internal roof that kept the fuel from evaporating—simply not sufficient to cope with ‘Mech-related damage.

Rain, fortunately, didn’t have time to realize her miscalculation. The heat from the detonation triggered a sympathetic explosion of her LRM ammunition; which in turn triggered the high-yield explosives which filled every spare bit of airspace within her little Valkyrie.

Ooops.

Wonder if those fires are going to spread out of control or something.

Especially considering residential and industrial/commerce buildings alike just went up in a huge explosion.

Just imagine it, setting fire to the entire city by mistake. That'd stir the IS up. Then again, it might just cause a massive economic collapse.

Edit: vvvv Yeah, that's about what I thought as well. After all those forest fires before, lets just say everything is on fire and leave the city to burn after the mission is over.

Hi, I'm Troy McClure! You might remember SD from such films as "Guys, I'm not sanguine about this Mech choice", "The Millstone of the Clans", and "Uppity Sperglord ilKhan"! Make sure to clear the date for his upcoming documentary, "How I ran a Star of Clan Mechs into the ground!"

Obviously! I mean, gosh, how could anyone think that an outright statement from the game master might be true? *dope-slaps own self.* What was I thinking?:downs:

Tharkad does not have homeless. They'd freeze to death in the balmy summer months.

The train is not a building, unfortunately.

This update was hilarious, though I was definitely not expecting that explosion to level quite so much of the city ! Even so, I'm not sure what else the Valkyrie pilot was expecting. It wouldn't be Battletech without a heat-induced ammo explosion.

Knowing the Lyrans, the lives and property of the homeless aren't factored into their economic damage value equations at all.

Hell, we'd be lucky if the lives and property of those with homes are factored in. If they are, they're very cheap. The current price of a human life, according to the US Government, is between $5,000,000 and $8,000,000, depending on which agency you ask. Given that, four or three civilian deaths should have put the crew over their do-not-pass benchmark.

Obviously, the Lyrans figure their sums differently.

MASSIVE EXPLOSIONS IN THARKAD :neckbeard:

This mission is formally approved by me as a worthwhile use of this thread's time. Now go, and die with pride that I have been acceptably entertained.

Guys, find a woman who looks at you the way GhostStalker looks at every bald, obese, single 58 year old accountant from Tulsa who managed to win $4,000 by not wagering on a Final Jeopardy triple stumper.

:aaaaa: HORY poo poo... PISS! :neckbeard:

I was not expecting that massive of an explosion, guys. If you guys didn't need to kill yourselves so quickly, I would have never advocated it, knowing how much it would have blown up now. Seriously, that refinery went up like crazy. I guess the plan that Rain had was pretty decent, if only the refinery building didn't go up, it could have shielded her from the explosion. I guess. 10 million C-Bills in damage plus whatever else was vaporized in the explosion. Plus that massive shockwave and resulting crater... :drat: Only problem now is that you also collapsed a residential building there and killed some innocent Lyran citizens in collateral damage who were just trying to live their lives in their homes. You murderers... Try and avoid doing that from now on, yeah? Don't want to fail the mission by killing off any more innocent Lyran citizens, right? 12 million in residential damage in one fell swoop.

That's gonna affect the end of mission writeup, I guess. Only question is whether or not it will strengthen Lestrade's position at the end of it. He can point to all the dead civvies and blame the Home Guard for not killing the "raiders" fast enough and make them look bad, in order to replace them with others more loyal to him than Archon Melissa... Though, if the Home Guard units manage to kill the other two members of this lance, things might be mitigated somewhat.

The Assassin should finish demolishing the train, that should put you above the 30 million property damage requirements. After that, you should move to confront the new Home Guard Ace Grasshopper. Just make it quick before the Grasshopper moves to take you out before you finish wrecking the train. You've only got 4 turns left to die before Turn 17... It would suck to get this far if only to fail the property damage objective, allowing them access to the train you guys came in on and failing to make this look like an actual raid... The Von Luckner is also in the area, so maybe you should head towards him while continuing to wreck the train or something? I really want to see that thing in action. Die well! :black101:

As for the Javelin, I guess you should either keep moving towards the skyscraper, or the new Home Guard Ace Phoenix Hawk. Take potshots at the skyscraper, while trying to draw in the Home Guard dude. It would suck if you wound up dying to those two Loki Stingers or something like that. It's too bad that the Home Guard Griffin doesn't seem like he's going after you. Still, the Phoenix Hawk should be able to take you out handedly within 4 turns. You too, die well! :black101:

It's too bad the Shreck PPC Carrier spawned so drat far away... We won't be able to see that Home Guard unit in action. With its stats, you know it would have put anyone who challenged it in a serious world of hurt. All of the Home Guard units' stats make it a serious threat to anything. The fact that they are Aces make it even more so. Also, the wounded Locust ran away... Ha!

Last but not least, can I say again how much I love your writeups, PTN? Reading about Rain's line of reasoning, her miscalculation, then trying to outrun the subsequent explosion, failing, and then her attempts to put the fire out or land well to put out the fire and failing again, followed by the resulting explosion? Awesome!

EDIT: Wait, so was that apartment complex an apartment complex or not? I think I just got caught in the PTN doublespeak or something like that...

I bet that was one hell of a light show, fog or no fog.

Also, the giant crater on the map makes me smile just looking at it. I can't imagine how the civilian population is reacting to that, especially the people who had left the night club either drunk or high. A mech battle in the middle of the city is probably nerve wracking, but at least they wrap their heads around it. They've seen the holovids of Solaris fights, and probably war footage on the news. But an entire refinery exploding? I bet that's exhilarating, in a "JESUS gently caress!" kind of way.
