Most optimized mechs are extremely boring to play. Oh yawn, the most complicated choice i have this game is where i'm jumping and firing my large pulses?

Because it's a 2/3/2 with no survivability. You might as well do your fighting from six sheets away.

The UM-AIV actually has 10 shots with an Arrow IV making a bit more sense, if you think of it as a more survivable Arrow IV launcher. Both homing and non homing in the default bins. Making it rather a nice artillery mech. Granted it's slow as poo poo but cheap as gently caress.

I love the Cauldron-Born/Ebon Jaguar to death. I'm a huge fan of fast heavies, and the A variant packing an UAC20 plus some ER lasers inbetwen some machine guns and medium pulse kicks out a lot of dirt both front and back, due to the 325 XL engine.

Plus it just looks freaking cool. It's low profile, and toss in that it has chicken legs and can technically hug the ground, you end up with a potentially awesome machine.

I mean seriously, just look at this motherfucker:

I would say the best cheese is a modified Warhawk-C. Swap out the ER PPCs for additional LPLs. 4 LPLs + TC = SCREW YOU! :)

The Black Python/Viper is infinitely more annoying as a pulse+TC boat. Sure, you've got less firepower, but you can jump around at medium/long range for +3s until the end of time while shooting on 6s or 7s also until the end of time. It isn't fun for either party, though.

A 4 LPL Warhawk C would be very much uncalled for.

I think my favorite mech of all time, incidentally, has to be either the Maelstrom, the Phoenix Hawk PXH-3PL, the Buccaneer BCN-3R, or the Fireball ALM-7D for sheer lols factor. Although the Fireball isn't really a mech exactly, it's more of a pilot-guided cruise missile with legs. I don't recall the last time I actually used the guns on one.

After playing through MW4 I've had a soft spot for the Uziel, at least the UZL-2S and similiar varients.

2 PPCs can dish out a lot of hurt, while the speed keeps it at a nice long distance away from heavier mechs.

Working on the update now.

I'm also trying to think of a contest that'll let me let you name a few more Clan 'Mechs. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Edit:

Got one.

We'll be seeing Grier Siedman again, but he won't be piloting his old Kraken. In one paragraph (or with a single piece of artwork), make an argument for which front-line assault-weight Omni we'll see Grier piloting next.

Winner gets to name one of the unnamed clan 'Mechs on the field, but remember:

“Merciful Buddha!” Chu-I Eriksson cursed as the enemy Thunderchild opened fire with its large laser. The shot struck a tree less than a meter in front of him, blasting it to flaming splinters. Another few steps forward, and the shot would’ve caught him square in the cockpit.

In a snap decision, he returned fire with his PPCs. Both shots went low, spraying dirt and shards of the rocky ridgeline over hundreds of meters of terrain. Heat spiked in his cockpit as his Marauder’s engine throttled into a high-frequency hum as it increased power to recharge the spent PPCs. Beside him, his comrades opened fire as well, but succeeded mostly in blasting more dirt from the hillside.

A flying pebble pinged from his armor as his computer painted a grim picture: a few missiles had pitted—but not penetrated—the armor protecting the annoyingly quick little medium’s left hip.

Grier knows that to grasp victory, it is best to press the advantage the omnimech. Grier is wise, and knows restraint. He does not charge towards the enemy like a ristar with glory in his eyes. Even though I said I find the design boring, I submit the Hellstar as Star Colonel Siedman's next mech. Why? Tanks, by the nature of their construction rules, don't have to worry about heat issues. Neither will this machine. Also, a primary worry of the Hells Horse's favored ground units is supplying them with ammunition on extended campaigns. Once again, this design does not have that worry. Third, it is a canon HH design (sort of). Though it is a 3079 design, it incorporates no "advanced tech" like heavy lasers; just 4 old fashioned ER PPCs, an XL Engine, and ES internals.

If this is not acceptable, my alternate choice is the Highlander IIC. Why? The Prime configuration has a diverse set of weapons to knock holes in armor at range (Gauss Rifle) and then exploit those holes once close (MPLs and SSRM-6s). The design also carries a great deal of armor to ward off all but the heaviest of weapons.

“You Inner Sphere scum fight like tanks. Therefore: you will now be treated like them.”

Grier Siedman is an old warrior by inner sphere standards: By those of the Clans, he is unnervingly ancient, one who will not simply go off and fade into a Solahma unit due to his sheer ability as a warrior. His initial 'Mech choice, the Kraken, exemplifies his relentless nature, wearing down the opposition in brutal fashion. Bear in mind that was before he asserted the true honorlessness of the Inner Sphere warriors: How would that translate into a frontline unit? Outrange them. Outgun them. Don't allow them even a chance to get close, and show them no mercy whatsoever. Be prepared for a long battle: Make sure you have something left even when every bullet or missile is gone. Speed is tertiary to sheer throw weight of fire and impenetrable armor. The choice is clear:

Alternate-Universe 3032 TRO Entry 3 posted:

The Gamma variant (of the Varangian) is far less common, although the Hell’s Horses seem to favor it as a fire-support platform. Mounting a pair of LRM-20s and a Gauss Rifle for long-range fire support, the Gamma has sufficient long-range firepower but likely suffers from ammunition problems. Unfortunately, its secondary armament of three Large Pulse Lasers enables the design to remain in a fight long after its ammunition has been exhausted. Once again, a single Flamer provides the ‘Mech’s only anti-infantry firepower.

Star Colonel Siedman has certain things he favors, obviously - assault-class mechs and extremely long ranged weapons. Why else would a high ranking bloodnamed warrior be piloting a second line mech like the Kraken? It isn't even an omnimech!

The obvious dishonor of having such a cut-rate machine and of having been defeated by dezgra forces leaves only one way he could redeem himself - by striking another clan and claiming a downed omnimech of theirs as his prize. Thus I suggest a mech that fits his likes and demonstrates his skill: the Turkina. To have won a Trial of Possession to steal away one of Clan Jade Falcon's totem mechs is victory enough to at least partly clear the stain from his codex - and the machine as well is one he would like. Large, heavily armored, and the most common configurations focusing on heavy long range firepower. A large brace of autocannons failed to defeat the low ComStar soldiers - but when paired with ERPPCs and LRMs, perhaps that would.

I love the potoo,
and the potoo loves you.
Ultimately, Siedman has only earned his position and age by a simple maxim: firepower carries the day. A weapon's worth is measured by its reach and power, and Siedman will bring every weapon he has to bear on the Inner Sphere. Conquest is not the objective of the Clans, and especially not Clan Hell's Horses. Only destruction. And Clan Hell's Horses brings with it the legacy of a mech designed by General Kerensky himself: a Devastator IIC. The original brought a devastating one-two-three punch of gauss rifles, PPCs, and medium lasers. The Clans, and Siedman, have improved the design further. Only death awaits those foolish enough to stand in Siedman's way.

Or if it has to be an assault Omni that canonically exists, then Siedman has, by dint of sheer skill, earned the right to pilot a Warhawk.

Is very likely too new, since only one was fielded during the battle of Tukayyid. Still, I do like the Turkina.

There is no Devastator IIC - according to Sarna, the Devastator was a mech designed by Kerensky that fought in the Battle for Terra, but apparently the Clans forgot about the design because when the Devastator finally appeared, it was in Federated Whatever hands. The suggestion was that a Devastator IIC exists in your altered timeline that's an Omni. As it is, replacing the second suggestion with a Warhawk for the same reasons - a devastating long-range mech.

I'm not sure I buy the Kingfisher as the Devastator IIC (unless the Kingfisher C is the Kingfisher Prime in this timeline), but the Kingfisher is an Omni so you can consider a vote for a Devastator IIC as a vote for a Kingfisher if you want.

I'm cool with this. I'm no artist, so I'll let Les Dorscheid do the talking.

Heh. Well, considering where that picture comes from, I think that's an excellent argument against the Masakari.

Yup. That one? Belonged to Jeremiah Rose.

Try not to think about that!

But seriously, I think it's a good picture, pilot notwithstanding.

I suppose I should contribute. I say Seidman will be driving a Naga. He's practically ancient, and yet shows no signs of issues with self-worth; somewhat unconventional for the Clans. Moreover, he is of the Hell's Horses, who truly understand the value of combined arms and fire support. The choice of a base Kraken demonstrates his appreciation for the effectiveness of long-range fire. Finally, I suspect that he has seen enough battles (as evidenced by his behavior against the ComGuard) to realize that the true glory lies in winning the battle or the war, not in glorious and flashy dueling.

All Silpheed squadrons scramble now!

Siedman will obviously pilot a quick, heavily armed machine, after his experience fighting these Inner Sphere surats proves his slower, longer-ranged style less effective. As such I'd say something lighter, 80 tons, but with a decent ranged bite that gets nastier as he closes. Obviously he's tried wearing the enemy down, so next he'l end them in one devastating blow. There's only one Omni that fills this obvious, deadly role: the Gargoyle.

Too bad the Canis isn't an option. It fits the guy practically to a T and it's probably my favourite 'mech of all time.

And the Supernova's out, too. :(

And what better way to purge his dishonor than by staging a successful Trial of Possession for the prototype?

Does it have to be an Omni Assault? If not, allow me to propose that Seidman continues his "sandpaper them to death" theme and go with a Crossbow -D? With his gunnery skill, that's pretty much a guaranteed 48 points of damage per turn. It has more sandpaper than the Thunderchild Gamma we're facing now, with FOUR Streak SRM-6s!

Everyone knows warriors are a superstitious lot. Bloodnamed warriors are especially so, given the sense of fate they almost invariably get on the day they win their immortality. Grier Siedman is no different. He would never admit it to anyone and dismiss it as simple preference. Sometimes he questions himself for it and wonders if old age has made him go mad. But ever since he saw his final opponent, Star Commander Alisha, die from the last shot of his last functional weapon and win his Bloodname Grier Siedman has known that Ultra Autocannon 2 is the weapon he lives by and will one day die by.

Grier Siedman pilots a Dire Wolf B.

I think Grier Siedman might have learned some things from his last battle. He still, of course, will have preferences. A bias towards extreme weight and range is a given. But I think the failure to defend the HPG has likely taught him two things, and for a warrior of his age and skill, the ability to learn is a given. The first lesson is that against the massed armor and numbers of Inner Sphere forces, the sandpapering approach of the Kraken is ineffective. Hoping for a lucky shot to pierce the armor just isn't reliable enough, although it can work quite well in a one-on-one duel. He needs something with punch. But he also needs mobility: his defeat came when his position was overrun, and a Kraken has no options when that happens. Clearly, Siedman needs an assault mech that can move, and has large-caliber direct-fire weapons with range.

As a result, I think the perfect ride for him is the Executioner A, which fits both criteria in spades and will also be massively annoying with an 0/1 pilot in it.
