Katana Kat’s engine was slowly but surely destroying itself. Without the inbuilt heat sinks that made up the bulk of a BattleMech’s reactor shielding, fusion was unsustainable. The magnetic ‘bottle’ containing the `Mech’s boiling heart wavered as the stressed and overheating circuitry began to fail. Like a man bleeding to death, the Katana Kat’s DI computer wavered as less-vital systems began shutting down from lack of power. The diagnostics board wavered between green lights that signaled all components were fine and functioning properly and the red lights that signified major technical problems. Fuhito Tetsuhara ignored them as his `Mech died around him. He had finally done it, finally achieved mushin: that state of mind and body as one prized by the Samurai of House Kurita. His elder brother had spoken of such things when he’d given Fuhito the family’s heirloom `Mech after the Dragon had, in its infinite wisdom, promoted him to a regimental command and deemed the Katana Kat insufficient for such a position. No thoughts, no doubts, no emotions crossed Fuhito’s mind as he synchronized perfectly with the Katana Kat’s dying computers. The `Mech moved with a fluid grace at odds with the massive damage it’d sustained as the almost humorously chicken-shaped BattleMech the DCMS had designated ‘Swordbreaker’ came about with terrifying swiftness and opened fire with the blistering array of lasers wrapped around its right fist. The Katana Kat shifted smoothly as lasers sliced flickered around it, its graceful motions apparently throwing off the Swordbreaker’s aim. Superheated columns of air imploded with the crackle of distant lightning. Not a single beam touched the Katana Kat as it danced away with only the barest hint of motion. With a stuttering flicker, the 360 degree compression strip filling Fuhito’s sight vanished, taking with it the bulk of his targeting systems as the Katana Kat’s DI computer began to cascade crash. Systems failing with alarming frequency, Fuhito still held his fire, feeling his foe’s movement with his ki more than seeing it. He loosed his last salvo of SRMs at the Swordbreaker. One of them caught flame and exploded, throwing another off course—the final two struck the Clan `Mech in the chest, cracking armor plates but causing little more than cosmetic damage. It was a moral victory, in Kurita terms. If the Katana Kat had retained the capacity, he would’ve dropped it into a respectful bow before punching out. With a sudden burst of pain like railroad spikes being hammered into Fuhito’s temples, the Katana Kat’s DI computer shut down—and with it, his mental connection to the machine was lost. Without a hint of remorse, Star Captain Matsukaze Ravenwater shot the dying Panther in the back; his large lasers coring the blackened remains of its torso and cutting the damaged `Mech in half. He frowned in irritation at the time it’d taken his targeting computer to lock on to the crippled enemy unit. If that pilot survived, he vowed, Matsukaze would claim him or her as a bondsman. Above all else, the Hell’s Horses respected tenacity. {John Madden Mode: ON} Now, now see, I just don't know about that turn Al. Sure, you'd think that maybe it was bad for the defense there because they've lost another guy to injury, but now they've got a really good position set up here. Let, uh, let me show you what I mean here with the telestrator. I mean, look at this formation here! There's no good way through, and and and I'm not sure what you do as an offensive coordinator in this situation. Just look at that cross-street there. That's where the point of attack has to be for the offense and there's just no good way through, it's really great gap coverage by the defense there. You can't really run the ball through that kind of defense, you have to go through the air a little bit. You try and run it and BOOM! Those safeties are close, you know, supporting the run defense, and are just going to eat up any rushing attempts. And that's the other problem here Al, what's the QB doing? Where is the passing game here? He didn't take a five or even seven step drop, he took, uh, he took like a twenty step drop. That's not how you make plays in the National Football League. You've got to step up in the pocket and let your arm do the work and this guy just isn't doing that. Look, uh, look how far away he is from the line of scrimmage here! You don't want to be throwing downfield from that far behind the line, especially this guy. This QB has, uh, just a really accurate arm, but not a whole lot of arm strength and ability to go deep, he reminds me of Chad Pennington. He can make plays but he just isn't making them right now. The worst part is, is, uh, there's just no good way to get him back in the game for a few turns. The same goes for P4 too, who you can't even see on this shot he's so far away. The line of scrimmage should be up near the top of the shot and these two guys are just lollygagging around. You can't just let yourself get, uh, just just so isolated on big plays like this in a big game. I think P2, P3, and P5 are just going to have a hard time of it for a couple series here. They're just going to have to move opposing defenders out of the way and create some holes that the other players can exploit when they get there. That's the kind of blocking that good teams are able to execute, and I think these next couple turns here are going to show us if this is a legitimate contender here or just a mediocre eleven, Al. {John Madden Mode: OFF}

If I read this right, if that kick hits either leg then S6 goes down. That would be a huge change. edit: vvvv I don't know about the tourists, but he did crash and burn. Krumbsthumbs fucked around with this message at 04:52 on Jan 7, 2012 |

It's okay, second-best Panther is still alive (but pretty much effectively incapacitated). So we can take that pilot as a bondsman!

So, guys, you are a headhunter Star on a mission to kill the leader of a Successor State in the heart of its defenses. This would generally imply hitting fast and hard, bypassing crippled foes and punching aggressively through the enemy's defences before reinforcements arrive. Apart from the RPG reasons why a Clan headhunter star would not act in a cautious manner, there is probably (I would go so far as to say, hopefully) an in-scenario reason why it would be wise to act a bit more aggressively.

Now is not the time to rush, that would be the worst of both worlds. They can still reverse the situation with the intersection, though it'll take some serious time. Hopefully there aren't any reinforcements coming. Hey PTN, if Goonstar blows up a building hex: What is the height of the resultant rubble hex? (Can it be jumped over?) Would the existence of a basement be revealed? If either of these are the case, then some urban renewal might be the order of the day.

Also, I think the resulting rubble pile would be too high to jump over.
