Why don't more mechs use armor sloping to increase their armor effectiveness? From what I know, only the Annihlator incorporates it into the design.

A lot of the tanks in the series, and heavy aircraft, appear to use sloped armor in their designs. Mechs just have always had the bulky aesthetic that focused more on large bricks of armor strapped to their interior frame, designed to be easily replaced.

Yeah, especially since the rules basically say it's ablative armor. I'm trying to imagine the shape of a bipedal mech with sloped armor, and all I come up with is an octahedron with legs.

Also, the closest thing I know of to armor shape having a mechanical effect is the Narrow/Low Profile design quirk from StratOps. It's not quite the same, but calculating the precise effect of armor sloping based on firing angles would unfortunately be a tad bit mental given the rules as is. Purely design-wise? I guess because Battletech has always been big, bulky, and stompy with a side order of Dougram, though the Wobbie Celestial omnis are pretty angular in a number of ways. Only the FD-originals and his MWO redesigns really get the sloped glacis and gritty mechanical look down--it's no surprise he's done more vehicle designs for CGL than 'Mechs when you look at it that way. Also Society protos, which look amazing. ... Speaking of protos, I wonder if there's any on the horizon. You know, the Jade Falcons are coming. Trying to finish up Taerkar's second submission, just got back from work.

Normally I don't like reboots or revamps but one in line with the new Mechwarrior MMO might do wonders for the franchise in general. There is some very nice art coming out of the game and artists like T.G. Xarbala make the mechs much nicer to look at than the old canon 80's black and whites. If you took all the good elements of BT and boiled them down into a nice new form you could gain a lot of new players.

I can see the Centurian taking the match if the thunderbolt bites it. The Catapult is pretty chewed up, so getting in close to keep the PPC off of him could work yeah? I've been pretty lurky in this thread, but I've sent in a pair of submissions for the design contest. The Capellan bit is pretty ho-hum, a heavy with large lasers and LRMs. But I think the entry for the Ryokens is pretty quirky. What with four legs and all.

Welp, we're coming up to the end. Still holding out hope on seeing things devolve into an ineffectual kicking match, or perhaps a boxing cross-counter. It'll be a minor miracle if I somehow manage to finish before voting's done, but I'll get done somehow no matter what! Taerkar's sketches are sent and Captain Foo has received the first of two. It'll take a day per pic to finish the rest so I guess this'll be BattleMech Sketch Boot Camp week. Let's see how many shortcuts I can take while still leaving things looking decent. Also you have no idea how much self-control it's taking to not to give jng2058's contest entry an RGM-79-derived GM head. Since my own entries can wait until everyone's done, this means I'm pretty much done with the Capellan sketches for a while (and no more copy-pasting missile tube templates!) so I can focus on the Ryuken designs. It's curious that of the Capellan designs I got to work with, only one was not a chickenwalker.
