“And the Thunderbolt takes a bad fall; he’s outta-there! I’d hate to be Boyington after a fall like that. Now, I get a lot of questions about falls, but the biggest is: Duncan, what’s it like to be in fifty tons of falling ceramet and myomer? Well, that’s not easy to explain. Sometimes, the `Mech goes down gently; you catch yourself with a knee or your arms and cushion the impact. Other times, you go down like that Thunderbolt: hard on a side with a limb blown off. For the pilot, it’s a bit like being mauled by a bear or jumping out a third floor window; except he can’t bend his knees or roll with the landing, he’s just gotta ride it down and hope for the best. Poor Boyington’s going to be lucky if he’s still conscious, but at least his SRM Ammo didn’t go up!”

E: Orders are in.

Since the scenario is going to be over shortly, maybe all the Solaris players could give some commentary on their strategies and tactics used prior to PTN introducing the cheevos?

I'll be happy to start:

quote:

When I saw my 'Mech assignment and map positioning, I immediately figured that I wanted to get out of Level 1 - The Cat's weaponry favored distance and having the ability to maintain said distance, but in the Factory map, that would only be possible if I were on Level 2 with the ability to drop down to Level 1 or climb up to Level 3 quickly, depending on circumstances.

Neither Felime nor I were inclined to shoot at each other since we were the least-equipped to survive a Grand Melee-type fight, so we quickly formed that alliance and tailored our movement in Turns 1-3 to try and not make it obvious we had no plans of shooting at each other.

I was OK with climbing up to Level 2 where B and D were because I was gambling on the randomizer making one of them my ally. Figured that I would get the worst possible result. :negative:

My rather, questionable, movement during Turn 4 was caused by double- and triple-guessing my opponents' movements and going all :downs: as a result.

Everything from Turn 5-9 was pretty much me trying to get to my ideal position on the map while trying to minimize any further damage I took. Then PTN changed things around and I figured, gently caress it. :black101:

Hey, I'm the Catapult pilot for this game. Just wanted to throw this out for you.

We're both at a bit of a disadvantage for this fight compared to the other 4 combatants. What say you to a mutual non-aggression agreement, at least until one or two of the others go down?

My thoughts exactly. Honestly you're in a much shittier position than I am, as the other gold team mechs can come down towards you fairly easily. I have very little desire to do any damage to the other underdog. My suggestion would be to stay out of LOS and maybe try to get to a somewhat more secure position. They might not expect you to jet up and make a break for the upper level, but there's a possibility you might still get shot if the two gold mechs on level 2 can see you, and there's no real guarantee your teammates won't be shooting you in a few turns.

Honestly, the safest place for you is up where I am, but the trip up here is the least safe place on the map for you.

That said, there's really no point in either of us shooting the other even if we are the only shots available, until the other guys are beat up. Neither of us can take one of the other mechs one on one without being much less damaged than them.

For a formal agreement, I'd say let's not shoot eachother until at least two of the other mechs are down and the others are beaten up, or possibly even until all the other mechs are killed or near death. I fancy both of our chances in a one on one brawl a lot better than either of us vs any of them after having killed the other.

This post is hurting the economy!
Marauder

Well since this was actually the first battle tech game I played against human opponents I didn't have any great master plan going in. While I wasn't going to be suicidally reckless with my moves I decided before the start of the game to be agressive. I didn't have the jump jets to really bob and weave and I wanted to have some fun even if it meant losing.

The three goals I tried to keep in mind each turn were: A)Only have one opponent in firing position at any one time. I felt like I had the armor to take some back and forth, but focus fire is always bad. B) Allow no possibility of back shots. I should have kept this in mind, if I had kept it up I would have avoided a crippling blow. C) Stay as elevated as possible. I viewed this like an air plane dog fight. Height equaled manuevering advantage and any height you bleed for speed is hard to get back without someone shooting holes in you.

None of the turns stand out in my mind except for Turn 3. I felt so sure I was going to head cap the catapult with my foot I couldn't wait for the update. I dished out a fair amount of damage (33 points in a single turn), but of course took that PPC to the head in some kind of bizzaro reversal of my expectations. Then I was knocked out a turn or so earlier then I might have been due to someone hitting my now exposed cockpit. How cruel the dice gods can be.

Still I had some fun and it was probably for the best that I got eliminated then because I hit a patch were I would have randomly dropped off the face of the planet for a week. I'm sure the thread would have been pissed.

Yeah, anakha and I were really the only stable alliance in the game. Everyone else had too much to gain by backstabbing anyone else at an early stage, pretty much dooming any alliance to 'goon diplomacy'(the game) syndrome at the whim of the team switching. Up until the very end there was nothing really to gain from either of us hurting the other. I might have been able to kill or let the Thunderbolt kill the Catapult at the end there, but I didn't want to risk my kill-count getting caught by the Thunderbolt, and if the Catapult had gone down too soon, as you can see, the Thunderbolt could have taken me down pretty easily.

The most logical course of action would have been to flee to level 2, but that would have been a boring move and kindof a dick move to anakha. We'd been cooperating all game and I wasn't going to backstab him now for a slim chance at the last man standing. Especially with my frag count on the line! It all turned out in the end. We'll see how the dice decide to end this.

This works to a degree, but unlike planes moving down elevation doesn't increase your speed, it does the opposite. Really straight-line runs are what you want to do most.

Guillotine

I feel pretty comfortable with my play, with my only marked screwups being my total failure to check my orders the turn before I died which kept me from coming down and catching the Centurion in a crossfire; and arguably the decision to come down anyway even though it risked me getting caught in a crossfire (which ultimately killed me in an ammo explosion).

I was on the cautious side for the most part, but once battle was joined I did what I could to keep the Catapult engaged without letting him have a shot at my rear arc - and jumped in case the Marauder did what he said and came up, so that the Cat might wind up shooting him instead of me if he had orders to shoot the easiest target. This certainly worked, although maybe not for that reason.

There was also a reasonable effort to keep people talking to me about their plans, not so much because I gave a poo poo about alliances (especially as I pulled increasingly ahead in statistical chances despite my down-armored vast piles of SRM ammo) as because it gave me a little bit to plan about - see my contingency for getting the Marauder shot, or for that matter my hopes that the Cat would engage in a timely fashion. This didn't really work as well as hoped.

I might have played a bit more cautiously if I'd realized that a crit to my least armored area might kill me, or I might still have decided to sate the audience's lust for blood. My biggest regret is that it wasn't the Capellan I killed. Nothing personal Felime (well, maybe a bit personal, you did try to organize an alliance against me), our states are just at war presently.

I had fun. :) No, really. I went into this match with the only goals being not dying too fast and using the hatchet at least once. I got a bit annoyed by the early deadlock, so I decided to jump down to the first level, which started my little dance with Felime. Trying to keep in close contact with your intended target while simultaneously staying out of a crossfire situation was rather challenging. Felime came out better through a mix of luck with the dice and some ballsy maneuvering. Then it all kinda became a crowded clusterfuck, I shot the arm off the Thunderbolt and got kicked to death because somehow every leg hit I took seemed to be on the same leg.

Right now, I'm sorta conflicted. On one hand, there's nothing better than watching a Capellan get his face kicked in plus the Draconis Suns is just the best thing ever. On the other hand, Felime's kinda deserves to win. So, I guess I'll be rooting for Mutually Assured Destruction. :v:

I do have to admit that I've been pretty lucky in a lot of places, though I wouldn't say absurdly so. Wouldn't be standing without a good bit of it, but you could say that if any other two mechs had made it to the final two.

When you're behind the game, you've got two choices. Fearquit, or put your balls on the line and shoot for a touchdown. At the end of the day it doesn't matter who was bigger and stronger. To win at solaris, you have to score more kills than the other players. Never underestimate the little guy is a good thing to remember, because with some balls and dice, a stormcrow or centurion can do some work. I hope antonin has earned the right to test pilot the first CN9-D.

It's been a great game, and really got fun after it went from a "Don't die" to a a more objective based game. Well played to everyone.

Well, from an RP standpoint, your character would probably be totally justified in suggesting a mutual draw at this point. CT destruction totals your mech, and so you'd have to sit out matches until your stable can replace your ride.

I think Felime'd be more than justified in an Honorable Surrender at this point... which, from a Capellan pilot, would be a thing of beauty.

Because that would put the Draconis pilot against the Davion pilot in the finals, which would only serve to destabilize the populace of the new Draconis Suns by reviving nationalist sentiment, which can only be helpful to the CC.

If Felime's character wins, and we choose S7 again for the next vote, will said character be piloting the same mech in the finals, or a different one, do you think?
