Blackened and blistered by a hail of fire, its armor pitted and scored by shells twice the width of a man’s finger and high-explosive missiles, the enemy medium’s torso spun back and forth as the pilot took stock of his surroundings in spite of an immobile cockpit. “You’re surrounded,” Private Patil Jackson murmured under her breath. “Surrounded, outgunned—I hope—and outnumbered. C’mon, you bastard. Run.”

The sharply angular medium feathered its jets almost experimentally, as if uncertain where to go. Patil’s Locust slowed to a halt as she waited for the tortuously slow ammo feed to reload her launchers. Behind her, King brought his own Locust to a halt. The enemy would run now, she was certain—and they’d pepper it with missiles as it did, to discourage it from changing its mind; and then they’d go back and save the Lieutenant—“Patil,” her radio crackled, “get your rear end in gear!”

The enemy’s jets fired, sending it sailing through the air—right towards the vulnerable Locusts. With legs built directly into the torso, the Locust’s ability to come about quickly was limited. Patil spun her `Mech about, and loosed a flight of missiles even as the remains of One and Two Lance opened fire on the jumper. Her Locust staggered as though struck from behind by a charging Hunchback, her secondary monitors dying in an instant as her DI computer lost power and the actinic flash of a PPC burst through her `Mech’s center chest as it the armor was eaten away from behind.

King’s Locust lurched behind her as a shot from one of the enemy’s medium lasers sliced off its leg like a Civil War surgeon. The enemy medium towered over Patil’s crippled Locust; its cockpit lit a baleful red with heat warnings like the eye of an ancient monster; daring the rest of the Lance to cut their losses and run.

Wow, completely right about them being made of tissue paper and dreams. Maybe him being at the margin of the map will cut down on mobility options.

I'm guessing permanent ace means he's not getting shoved off the map?

Guys, find a woman who looks at you the way GhostStalker looks at every bald, obese, single 58 year old accountant from Tulsa who managed to win $4,000 by not wagering on a Final Jeopardy triple stumper.

I expected the Locusts to go down rather quickly without having accomplished much, and was not disappointed. Still, two in one turn is par for the course for a monster like the Bobcat, I guess. And you guys still haven't broken through it's armor to get those crits yet. Sure, the torsos are a little empty of armor, but nothing's penetrated yet and it's still standing and dangerous. FIRE EVERYTHING! It really is your only chance at this, I think.

Unfortunately not. The Bobcat is an Ace and you can only declare a charge/DFA on a target that has already made a move. In theory though that would be a really good way to end him nice and quick.

The Bobcat has Ace. He wouldn't be there by the time the Valk charged.

Ah. I was working under the impression that with just the Bobcat remaining, the current update showed the current turn with the Bobcat having already taken his Ace move.

I genuinely like Stackpole.

He's the perfect author for fifteen year old boys, because everything's flashy and exciting and you don't have to think too hard about anyone's motivations since the main character will tell you; and be wrong just often enough that it feels organic.

He is a master of his craft; which is writing serial fiction. In the art world, I'm sure that's the equivalent of being the master of the sprite comic; but I really do attribute a some of BattleTech's success and perseverance to Stackpole's writing (but mostly I attribute it to Mechwarrior 2).

I'm not entirely sure, but I think the Bobcat hasn't taken any hits to the arms yet.

We've been keeping track. As far as Goonlance can determine, this is correct.

How many tons of armor have you blown off of it yet? You should do some messing in SSW to see what it's likely still got left, and where.

Far as I can tell based upon what we've seen so far(18 on the legs/torsos, 22 on the Center, 6 on the center rear, and likely 4 on the side torso rears) I'm guessing that it has a light fusion engine too.

There may be something else there, but with 6/9/6 movement and the weapons it carries I don't think it has more than 12 doubles. Otherwise it wouldn't be overheating.

This post is hurting the economy!
Looking at our estimates a hit to the rear torsos or the left and right front torso will open some nice holes while a hit to the right leg will blow it off. The front center, arms and left leg can still take a bit of punishment. I have my fingers crossed.

A hit to the right leg will open it up to mobility crits, you mean. There's still a bit of armour on there.
