The players will be entering the mapsheet from the bottom edge. Mission Objectives: Secure the Geothermal Power Plant OR Destroy the Outflow Control Bunkers in 0321 and 2622 (Primary) Bondsman Wilberforce stood at sharp attention, his face as devoid of expression as his neighbor’s was animated. To his right, Bondsman Piet raged with a frightening intensity. Her muscles taut and her jaw clenched so tightly Wilberforce imagined he heard her teeth cracking. It was as though only an effort of will kept her from throwing herself at their Inner Sphere captors, these so-called Death Commandos. He had learned very little since his capture but that was hardly unexpected. He hadn’t really made an effort. For the past two days, everything Wilberforce did came with the methodical perfectionism of a machine. A robot simply performing whatever tasks were set before it without emotion, enthusiasm, or analysis. He had been captured by the Inner Sphere. It was yet more unneeded proof of Wilberforce’s genetic inferiority. Another failure for a codex the warriors of the Inner Sphere had stripped from him. His Clan would kill him if they recovered him. The enemy Star Colonel paced quietly before the captive warriors. The `Mech bay behind Wilberforce was a flurry of activity as ex-Clan technicians toiled for their new masters. They worked under the oversight of the Death Commandos’ technical staff, their work checked and double checked and yet Wilberforce was impressed with the pragmatism of these Inner Sphere warriors. From his own limited experience with captured Inner Sphere technical crews and pilots, they seemed surly and disruptive and highly prone to sabotage. Wilberforce’s expression remained lifeless as he remembered the fate of Mechwarrior Lucas’ Warhammer IIC. He had no proof of course, yet he hardly needed any. There could be no doubt that some enterprising Inner Sphere technician had welded the Warhammer IIC’s CASE vents shut at one point or another. That nobody had caught it spoke of likewise-sabotaged diagnostics equipment. Some technician’s magnum opus had cost him a soldier. It made him sick to his stomach though his conscious mind rejected any emotional reaction. Meanwhile, Piet raged. The enemy commander paused to look into his eyes. Wilberforce stared back, a faint glimmer of anger finally rising in him at the implicit challenge. The enemy commander watched him for a few moments before stepping past and outright dismissing Piet. A few steps further down the enemy commander paused to evaluate Miranda. She at least seemed to take her new status as a Bondsman in stride. Or perhaps that was simply the pain medications Dr. Tyrus had injected to help her deal with the pain of her many burns. Regardless, Wilberforce could hardly blame her for wishing to one-day regain her status as a `Mechwarrior. It was a hope that had burned in his own chest from the moment he’d been assigned to service with the armored divisions; a hope that had long-since died after five years commanding a tank that now only existed as a divot in the spaceport’s primary runway. The enemy commander completed another circuit, then addressed Wilberforce in the firm tones of a leader. “You are the commander of these warriors?” “I was,” Wilberforce replied mechanically, “but we are warriors no more.” The man considered this a moment, then spoke slowly. The gravity of his tone caught and held Wilberforce’s attention with an ease that again impressed the Clan warrior. “Dr. Sjaarda tells me that a bondsman need not remain a bondsman forever, yes?” Wilberforce’s voice caught in his throat for a moment as he struggled to crush the faint glimmer of hope that shot through his body. “Aff, Star Colonel. You are correct, a bondsman may be made a warrior again if his bondsmaster feels he yet has the proper heart.” Piet spat, unable to control herself. “What use is being a warrior at the cost of our honor? You should have dueled me, Atlas pilot! It would have been glorious—” The enemy Star Colonel turned to stare into her eyes. “You are a child,” he told her coolly. “All the personal glory in the universe is nothing. Honor comes only from victory and victory comes only with teamwork. What use is a warrior with neither dignity nor restraint? I’ve seen your record. Your ‘codex.’ You are a good pilot but a Mechwarrior who can’t follow orders is less valuable to me than a single farmer who can. You, I wouldn’t trust to repair a `Mech much less fight in one.” Piet stepped back as if struck. “Then grant me bondsref! I refuse to be of any use to you, barbarian. I will not betray my Clan to honorless scum.” Williams nodded, “You are correct, we are without honor. Our honor died when we failed to protect the Chancellor and we now pay the price. We will not stoop to your level and fight like children for our own personal honor when the honor of the Capellan Confederation is at stake. We have risked everything to come to this world and we will take it from you.” He turned, facing his assembled warriors. Ten other `Mechwarriors and many companies of enemy Infantry stood in uniform ranks, their uniforms devoid of any symbol save a white skull on a field of black. “Death Commandos,” he called, “are you prepared to die for honor?!” Silence greeted him. “Are you prepared to die for the Capellan Confederation?!” “Sir!” someone called as if on cue, “We’re prepared to die only for victory!” A uniform cheer rose from the assembled warriors, catching Wilberforce by surprise. Their chant of ‘Victory, victory!’ died slowly over several minutes. Piet seemed deflated, stunned from her anger by their former-enemy’s enthusiasm. Wilberforce nodded silently in comprehension. The Death Commandos would not lose. “`Mechwarriors,” Williams called. “We march on Mt. Gila. We will secure or destroy the geothermal plant there. I need two volunteers to drive trucks laden with heavy explosives! If we cannot drive the Clan defenders away, we shall use the trucks to destroy the outflow control bunkers and flood the plant with magma!” An infantryman stepped forward, drawing a silent nod from Williams. The trooper threw a salute, then turned towards one of the trucks that sat lonely and isolated at the far end of the spaceport’s tarmac. To his right, Piet stepped forward. She glared at Williams and through gritted teeth announced, “I volunteer.” Mission Notes: 1) The heat is intense. All `Mechs on the field will generate an additional 3 heat every turn. 2) The red lines on the map are lava tubes. Walking on them causes no damage, as they're not big enough for a `Mech to fall into and the vehicles are too light to break through. Ending your turn on a lava tube generates an additional 2 heat that turn. 3) All buildings are hardened. 4) Two vehicles will be under the players’ indirect command, and will be moved by me. They can be issued orders by the players piloting the Atlas and the Phoenix Hawk (or another player chosen by me, if both those `Mechs are eliminated). They are wheeled vehicles so their speed is halved if they’re not on a road. I don't know what is or isn't possible so just ignore anything insane, this is in case you decide to use your banshee as a distraction in this or a future map. *Have the banshee turn and shoot at a target, and have that target power down or fall down and play dead *Start jamming the area immediately, if they can't talk amongst themselves no one will have the balls to shoot at a possible friendly *Use the banshee as a distraction while you flank the enemy *Have the banshee self destruct while next to a bunch of other enemy mechs and maybe the ammo explosion would kill them all? (I don't know how ammo explosions work) Pringlescan4 fucked around with this message at 21:22 on Aug 21, 2012 |

In a matter of hours, we've somehow gone from "Pristine Clan mech perfect for R&D work!" to "Lets shoot it full of holes and send it to get focus fired at the start of the mission by the entire Clan force!". You people never cease to amaze me.

I dunno, perhaps they can strip out some of the clantech to simulate destroyed components? That way they have some tech to hand to the scientists, while still having a decoy.

The Archer is only packing half the total on its center torso armor. Is that intended?Zaodai posted:In a matter of hours, we've somehow gone from "Pristine Clan mech perfect for R&D work!" to "Lets shoot it full of holes and send it to get focus fired at the start of the mission by the entire Clan force!". Really gonna have to disagree here. This "Pristine Clan Mech" is honestly an R&D shitpile. Pack that back to the Inner Sphere and techs will ooh and ah at very little. We already have a full battlefield littered with samples of Ferro Fibrous armor and Endo Steel samples, and the weapons are things we have already salvaged, most likely in decent numbers. (At least 6 completely intact UAC/10's thanks to our fighter haul, plus one if it survived the Thresher dying.) At least one or two of those cERPPCs off the Warhammer and Inucbus survived. The only tech that we may not have seen anywhere else is the cER Small Laser.... honestly I just can't bring myself to care about that weapon too much though. And the Banshee IIC has nothing special going on in the engine department - and we already have a legless Jenner to send back for XL engine examination anyways. The Banshee serves us far better in preserving our ability to gain more salvage - and if there is any mech that is well designed for surviving this kind of deception it is this one. Pretty much complete armor coverage, and it's a zombie with case with an excellent close range punch. Assuming we can start it up right next to a Clan machine it could unload an alpha and kick or doublepunch on the first turn. Knocking out or crippling a clan machine and convincing them to waste a lot of fire on a well armored zombie would give us a tremendous upper hand in the upcoming battle and most likely preserve the company much better than the prospects of engaging in another knock out brawl. EDIT: Also, it gives us a much better chance of winning this fight instead of just blowing the reactor. Destroying the power plant may accomplish the mission objective but we will take a lot of damage and we will not get any salvage that way either. I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but the Atlas' MRM40 ammo did not restock, while the Gauss ammo did. Perhaps some Gauss ammo was scavenged from the Mars/Athena? Just something to keep in mind as the campaign goes along.

This'll be perfect!" *A day later after the techs have gone over the salvage haul* "Eh, it's not as advanced as we'd hoped. Do whatever with it."

I just want to throw it out there that from the look of the map, there are a lot of nice little hiding spots thanks to all the elevation 4 and 5 spots. Depending on how the enemy forces set up, it might pay off to use those to block LOS on the way in, pop the outflow control bunkers, and get the hell out without much damage. Especially after the last drop and how badly you guys got mauled, it might be best to go for the more "safe" option, regardless of the fact you're playing the Death Commandos. Of course, operation: Trojan Banshee might complicate that plan anyway...

So it kind of got lost in the whirlwind of voting, why are we leaving our most intact and battle ready company sitting in the woods and having the slightly damaged company attack an urban area unsupported? Wouldn't it at least have made sense to move them up somewhere where they could do something next turn?
