Let’s Read Warrior: En Garde (part 12)

Book 2
Chapter 33
Tharkad
District of Donegal, Lyran Commonwealth
24 April 3027

If it seems like there’s not a lot happening in these middle chapters, you’d be right.

Melissa Steiner books passage aboard the DropShip Silver Eagle, which is leaving in two days. One of the non-AI yet absolutely brilliant BattleTech computers then analyzes her weight, age, and etc. to assign her to quarters to keep the DropShip from being unbalanced during lift off.

Then, because she chose her name from a book rather than picking one at random, a computer in Skye recognizes that she is Melissa Steiner and not Joanna Baker and sends the information to Duke Lestrade who smugs about it for fifteen seconds or so.

We then jump to Andrew Redburn who is with Misha Auburn. He’s going back to the Federated Suns and decides that now is the perfect time to declare his undying love for a woman he almost certainly won’t see again for at least a year and, because it’s the Space 80s, it is implied they sleep together.

Book 2
Chapter 34
Tharkad
District of Donegal, Lyran Commonwealth
26 April 3027

Andrew Redburn will be traveling on the Silver Eagle with Melissa Steiner. We already know this, though.

We then cut to Melissa Steiner who is basically breaking down out of sheer terror. Remember she’s about to go visit a man more than twice her age whom she’s never met before yet MUST marry, is leaving behind everything she knows to travel to the Republic of Space Texas (the Federated Suns). She then has a psychotic break where a voice in her head tells her she’s worthless and is only now starting to earn everything she’s taken for granted in her life. It’s supposed to showcase her heroic resolve but it just comes across as insanity.

En Garde posted:

She shook her head, then massaged her leg. But I’m not Joana Barker. I’m Melissa Arthur Steiner; Archon-Designate. I don’t have to live in a rathole. I deserve better.

From somewhere in her mind, a sinister voice stirred her most hidden fears. Deserve? Deserve, little Princess? Deserving means you’ve earned something. What have you earned, child of plenty? Harsh laughter seemed to echo through her soul. Here, Melissa Arthur Steiner, you will begin to earn what you so arrogantly believe you deserve. See how your people live. Endure the same indignities to spirit and body. The, and only then, will you begin to deserve.

Creepy. The most sane ruler of the Inner Sphere, everyone.

Book 2
Chapter 35
Solaris VII (The Game World)
Rhaneshire, Lyran Commonwealth
5 May 3027

Justin and Gray are talking to an old man who knows where House Marik stashed some supplies in the last war. It’s a pointless scene designed to showcase Justin Xiang’s inherent nobility as he threatens to murder a translator with Yen Lo Wang. Gray then talks about the various intelligence agencies on Solaris, although he’s pretty sure Marik’s SAFE contingent killed itself off during the last Marik Civil War, thus beginning the running gag that is SAFE’s ineptitude.

Gray then tells Justin about his plans to steal a Lyran dropship on its way to the Federated Suns; on behalf of Duke Aldo Lestrade. DUN DUN DUUUUUUN except we knew that was coming already. Hooray!

Gray then invites Justin to be his partner, which Justin agrees to in a method that is supposed to be ominous but turns out to be unintentionally homoerotic.

En Garde posted:

“[…] Later I’ll nail him on the ship’s location.” [Gray Noton] smiled up at Justin. “What do you think? Are we partners?”

Justin smiled and gave Noton his good hand. “Till death do us part.”

Mechs made in the Lyran Commonwealth hold their value 5 times longer than mechs manufactured in other areas.

This incredible increase in longevity and value comes from a combination of practical Space German engineering and the fact that the other mechs will have to endure being shot at by shitloads of Lyrans.

There's a dude on the official forum who "proved" Davion was the author's favorite and Kurita the least favorite by calculating the total amount of advanced tech in each military by adding the upgrade totals up for each unit in each house and multiplying them by that unit's size. Then after that he added a coefficient for experience.

I'm fairly sure he has never seen a boob without paying for it.

The flagship LC stealth armored 'mech is only produced in extremely limited numbers and is generally a gigantic money-pit legal calamity, to be fair. The Ghost itself was also a shared project between Earthwerks and Defiance Industries.

Generally speaking I am fairly sure every faction has Plasma rifles post-jihad. Generally speaking the post Jihad Era really spreads the tech around quite a bit. There are a number of Capellan designs using Targeting Computers (which are generally a FedSun thing). Generally speaking it has gotten to the point where any kind of specialist tech has gone from "this faction only" to "most common for this faction"

Generally speaking though I would say that strictly gamewise, while I love Plasma Rifles and stealth armor they are a huge trap if you play by BV. Both are really extremely big BV sinks. This gets even worse as a lot of Capellan designs combine Stealth Armor with an all-energy loadout or worse yet an all-energy loadout and TSM (generally this is a bad thing on the heavier designs)

The only mech I have seen that actually uses TSM+Stealth well is the Ebony, which is kind of a special case. Otherwise you have a lot of really schizophrenic 'Mechs that can't decide whether they want to be a sniper who ends up only using half of its firepower to fight at range or a brawler who has a crapload of BV sunk into maybe 1-2 turns of +2/+1 TH numbers before it becomes useless.

The Mongoose II model 267 isn't built in small numbers and isn't a legal disaster, though? And that, not the Ghost, was the first mech to mount Lyran-made stealth armor. The Ghost is clearly the fault of the FWL and Republic.

That is a good point regarding the Mongoose II; I assumed the Ghost was the first Lyran design to use Stealth armor due to the whole legal tossup writeup it had in TRO 3085.

To be fair though, the Mongoose II was only "created" by the LC in the loosest possible sense of the word. It was primarily developed by LAW, and afterwards sold to Defiance Industries by ComStar who actually bankrolled building up the new factories for it as well. The 267 was an original Lyran modification though.

Also regarding the whole "Designs favor Davions" thing, there is a kernel of truth in there but it isn't regarding the advanced tech really. Though the FS has quite the fair share of stinkers in their mech lineup, there are a few specific designs that are particularly over-optimized and really frustrating to play against.

I got over the "Federated Suns magically get access to every technical advance" thing when I realized that in many ways it is good because most people getting their feet wet with Battletech go after Fedsun stuff first and it is better that they have a wide variety of equipment and a 'Mech lineup that is generally more forgiving for when the player makes mistakes.

There are plenty of compelling characters in Stackpole's novels!

Gray Noton is extremely well defined, his motives are clear and understandable and his friendship with Justin Xiang is genuine as is his regret for maiming a man he has recently come to know and like. He's still a terrible person, but for a space-80s businessman he's a very relatable one.

Meanwhile, Yorinaga Kurita is a man struggling with what his honor has done to himself and his family.

Likewise, Vlad Ward is forced to confront the idea that every idea which serves as the foundation for his life is false or worse, an intentional lie. He's simply responding to having his world turned on its head in the only way his culture accepts: with violence.
